My Kids -- Chapter Eight / The Departure

With my own kids there was no problem, the problems would arise
with respect to the 'adoptees', Linda, Lori, Jenny and Juanita.

Jenny's home life was such that her disappearance would probably
cause little concern for quite a while, perhaps never. She wanted
desparately to go, and I wanted her to come with us, so we decided that
Jenny would become one of us, an unadopted daughter, a new sister.

Juanita presented the same problem in a different way. She
wouldn't be missed much either, but her going with us would cause a
vendetta of sorts. In fact, it was the reason I decided we had to leave. We
spent a great deal of time going over Juanita's family, extended family, to
find out what they were likely to do. She convinced me that her father's
vendetta would be more for the beating I had given him than for her
running away and he might stop at the attempt at revenge, successful or not.
Besides, she said, he didn't have the resources to follow us out of state. I
gave Juanita a big hug and said, "Bienvenidas a la familia, querida mia, mi
hija del amor."

The problem of Linda and Lori was relatively easily solved. They
lived in a foster home and were scheduled to appear in court in a week.
They couldn't tell me too much, but it appeared that they were being sent to
an adoption agency. I called an acquaintance who, for the right price, is
always able to obtain whatever legal documents are needed to accomplish
whatever one needs. For ten thousand dollars he would deliver all the
documents needed to file legal adoption papers for both girls. Not merely
papers to start the process, but papers to show that the process had been
completed. He had a contact in the system who would see to it that the
forms showed up in the proper files and computers. It would take two days
to make up the forms. I gave him the go-ahead and was told that the papers
would be delivered Monday morning. He would meet me a block from the
court building after picking up the money from the bank.

The matter was settled. The four girls would become part of our
family, part of our cast. With that we made something to eat and, all of us
rather tired, took turns bathing (some of us together) and went to bed.

I slept little. First Jenny came in and hugged me for half an hour,
curling her naked little body against mine and telling me how much she
loved me and her new brother and sisters and how glad she was that we
were going away. I just let her lie there, cuddling, rubbing my chest and
kissing it, my hand caressing her firm, pliable, buttocks.

After she fell asleep I carried her into Steffi's room and laid her
down next to her new sister. When I got back to my room Juanita was
there lying on top of the covers. It was too dark to see detail, but I could
see that she was naked. As I approached the bed she extended her arm
toward me and took my hand in hers. "Do with me what you like, master,"
she whispered, "I am your slave now and will give you any pleasure you
want."

"Querida mia," I told her, "su no es mi esclava, su es mi hijastra, my
stepdaughter and an equal member of nuestra familia."

She snickered at my mispronounced Spanish, but she got the point.

"I will be a good hijastra," she whispered, "I will work hard, I will
please you always, but what do you want me to do right now?"

"I want to go to sleep," I whispered back and kissed her cheek.

She threw her arms around my neck and, pulling me down to her,
hugged her warm body against my own and pressed her face into my neck.
I felt the wetness of her tears running onto my neck and chest as she
whimpered softly and quietly murmured, "Gracias! Te amo," over and
over. I lowered her onto the bed, pulled the blanket over her and crawled
under it. She continued to hug me as I caressed her face and hair. When
Linda and Lori peeked into the room Nita and I started to laugh.

"Can we sleep with you tonight?" Linda asked me.

     "Why not, everybody else is."

They ran to opposite sides of the bed and climbed in, unsurprised by
the presence of Juanita. We all snuggled together the rest of the night.
What a lucky guy I am, surrounded by beautiful, young girls. Not only my
own lovely daughters, but kids who three months ago were total strangers
are now family. I hugged the three girls tightly, closed my eyes and finally
fell asleep. It was four in the morning.

Sunday came and dragged slowly by although we were somewhat
busy packing. I rented a motor home into which we packed all the clothes
we were going to take, all the equipment needed for our video business, and
there was still room for all of us and some food and toys and whatnot.
When the thing was fully loaded I filled the tanks, parked it in the driveway
and prepared to spend another nervous night awaiting Monday morning.

Dinner was tense that night, everybody was a little on edge. Silence
prevailed throughout the meal except for a couple of squabbles between
Sadie and the twins over who was the messiest eater. It blew over quickly
and we finished in silence. After dinner I filled everybody in on the plans
for the next day. We went to bed early and most of us probably spent a
night of rather fitful sleep.

Monday morning finally came and I told Steven and Susie to have
the kids ready when I got back. I took a cab to the bank and got a very
quizzical look from the teller who had to get the manager's approval to give
me ninety-nine one hundred dollar bills. I smiled and nodded to him as I
left, an envelope full of cash in my coat pocket, and walked the last two
blocks to the courthouse. His car was parked on the street a block from the
courthouse. I walked to the passenger door, leaned down and knocked.
The driver, recognizing me, opened the door and I got in.

"Got the money?" He wasted no time, I liked that. I pulled out the
envelope and handed it to him. He carefully counted them, peering closely
at each bill. Finally, he looked at me and grinned. "Must be a great kid to
be worth all this?"

"None of your business," I figured the needling was part of the
price.

"Yeah, yeah," he said, "I kinda like those little senoritas myself."

"What are you talking about?" I asked stupidly. Did he know about
Juanita?

He didn't answer, but handed me a large manila envelope saying that
all the necessary papers were in there. I wanted to find out what else he
knew. I grabbed his wrist, turning it backwards and upwards and grabbed
his throat with the other hand. "What are you talking about, asshole? Tell
me or I'll snap your fucking Adam's apple in two."

"Alright, alright," he gasped, "leggo, it's no big deal."

I released his throat, but kept his arm twisted behind him.

"A Mexican friend of mine told me that some guys are looking for a
Gringo who looks a lot like you. Seems he beat the shit out of one of their
compadres and absconded with his little girl. These papers wouldn't be for
her, would they?"

"No, they wouldn't. Where are these guys now?"

"Right there." He indicated with his head a car parked halfway
down the block on the other side. A man was standing by the passenger
door looking our way. I couldn't make out anyone else, but there appeared
to be three more in the car.

"What's supposed to happen?" I asked, suddenly worried that I
might not get the papers filed in time.

"When you leave I turn my lights on three times. Three of them will
follow you inside, the other one will wait in the car with the motor
running." He looked me in the eye, "If you let go of my arm I'll tell you
how to get out of this."

"I could kill you," I snarled, "that way your lights don't come on."

"And they'll kill you before you get fifty feet. Look, I don't much
like these assholes anyway. Ten in the morning and they're already drunk,
or high." He took a breath. "Look, there's an alley just around the corner. It
leads to the back door of the courthouse. If we drive off together they'll
have to follow and they'll have to turn around before they can get behind
us. I'll turn the corner, drop you off at the alley and drive on up the street,
keeping far enough ahead of them so they can't see you're not in the car."
He stopped, looked at the car up the street, then back at me, "whaddaya
say? It's your best chance."

I let go of his arm and considered the possibilities. What chance did
I have? Three of them were going to jump me and haul me into their car
and take me God knows where and do...well, I didn't want to think about
that.

     "Let's go," I finally said.

He started the engine and gunned the car forward. We passed the
surprised Mexicans and skidded around the corner, heading for the alley.
As we turned the corner I glanced back to see that they had just gotten the
car moving and were held up by traffic trying to get turned around. He
stopped the car at the alley and I jumped out.

"Good luck," he shouted and sped off not hearing my "Thanks."

I ducked into a doorway and waited. The pursuing car sped past the
alley a few moments later and I ran to the back door of the court building
and went inside.

The county adoptions division was on the fourth floor. I ran up the
stairs, avoiding the crowded elevators. I opened the door to Room 414,
County Department of Adoptions and walked in. The contact was the only
person in the office. I handed her the envelope, she checked the forms for
completeness, signatures and smiled at me. She took the lot and left me
standing at the counter without a word. I guess that was it. Not much
guidance, but I breathed a sigh of relief anyway. Linda and Lori were home
free.

I left the building, watching carefully for any sign of the 'enemy',
and took a cab home. The motor home was parked in the driveway, no
unusual signs to be seen anywhere. I paid the cab and went into the house.
The kids were all ready to go, dressed, fed, bathed, whatever needed to be
done had been done. We bid goodbye to the house, piled into the motor
home and pulled out of the driveway.

As we drove down our street for the last time, Susie, who was
sitting in the front passenger seat next to me, turned and looked back at the
house where she and her siblings had been raised. She turned to me and,
with a tear running down her cheek, said, "Daddy, I'll miss never seeing
mom again."

She was right. Paula was buried in a cemetery a couple of miles
from the house and Susie had been going there at least twice a week.

"We all will, honey." I wanted to get the hell out of this town
before the Mexicans caught up with us, surely they were still looking, but I
had to let the kid have one last talk with her dead mother. I turned right at
the corner and headed toward the cemetery. When we pulled up to the gate
I scanned the parking lot and the surrounding area. There were two cars in
the lot and a burial was taking place on one of the hillsides with maybe
twenty persons in attendance. 'Not too well liked,' I thought. Nothing
appeared out of the ordinary. I pulled up next to the hill where Paula lay,
parked and shut off the engine.

"Steven, go with Susie and be back here in ten minutes." I looked
at Susie and said, "Sorry, sweetie, we can't stay here too long. Please
understand."

She nodded. Stephanie asked if she could go too. She was old
enough to have good memories of her mother so I let her to go with the
others.

"Stay with Steven and Susie and don't wander off," I told her as she
scampered out of the motor home to join her brother and sister.

I had said my goodbyes to Paula and didn't want to stir too many
old memories. The other kids had probably been too young when she died.
They didn't seem to remember anything about having been here two years
earlier so I thought it best for the rest of us to remain in the motor home.
The trio walked up the hill, Susie breaking into a trot toward her mother's
grave, Steven and Stephanie walking briskly after her. A few moments later
they disappeared down the other side and I leaned back in the seat,
nervously waiting.

Fifteen minutes later I began to worry, having seen no sign of the
kids coming back. I reached under the seat and pulled out the .45 auto I
had purchased, checked the clip, slipped a round into the chamber and
stashed the gun in my waistband, safety off. I looked at the girls still with
me inside the vehicle. Sadie had climbed into the overcab berth and had
fallen asleep. The twins and Linda and Lori were playing some board game
in the back and Juanita was reading a book. I called to Juanita to join me in
the front.

"Nita, listen," my voice was a little shaky and the look in her young,
dark brown eyes showed that she sensed my anxiety. "I'm going to find
Steven and the girls, they're staying too long and we need to get going. Stay
here with the little ones. Lock the door behind me and pull the curtains on
all the windows and all of you stay on the floor and be quiet."

She looked at me, knowing that something was wrong, but said
only, "OK, hurry back."

I stepped out of the motor home, watched as Juanita locked the
door and pulled all the curtains. Satisfied that they were as safe as they
could get, I walked in the direction the other kids had gone. The burial had
ended and the last of the mourners were just leaving as I walked past. The
cemetery was quite deserted now.

I skirted the bottom of the hill to avoid being seen by anyone on the
other side, in case there was anyone to be seen by. As I neared the far end
where it sloped downward again the headstones on the other side came into
view one by one. I dropped into a crouch and jogged, almost ran, forward,
scanning left and right for any sign of movement.

Suddenly, right in front of me, I saw it. Something, someone, was
moving close to the ground. I dropped to the ground and lay there,
watching. Whatever it was, it didn't seem anxious to get away or come after
me. I moved forward again, carefully watching and listening. Then I heard
the moan. It came from the figure on the ground. Now I could make out a
shape, a person, no, a boy. Steven!

I got up and broke into a run to where he lay. He was lying next to
his mother's grave clutching his stomach and groin and moaning.

     "D-dad. Three g-guys...t-took...the g-g-girls...ohh."

"Where did they go?" He pointed off to my right. I looked all
around and saw nothing. My first thought was for the girls, Susie and
Stephanie, and I nearly panicked, but Steven's moans brought me back.

"Come on, Steven," I said, "let's get you back to the motor home."

I picked him up and, leaning on me and supported by my arm, he
managed to limp back. I was worried that the Mexicans had found the
motor home, but everything was as I had left it. I helped Steven inside, got
in and locked the door behind me.

The girls had been frightened by seeing me carrying Steven and
now he was using his wounds as a badge of courage and enjoying the
attention. Juanita had pulled off his shirt and was treating a nasty cut he had
on his side. When she finished bandaging it she said, "OK, big brother, let's
get those pants off."

Steven looked at me and grinned as he lifted his butt off the bed and
slid his pants and shorts down to his ankles. His hairless balls were black
and blue, no wonder he couldn't walk, poor kid. Juanita was very gentle as
she carefully washed his genitals and rubbed some salve on them. He must
have been feeling better because he got an erection.

Then Juanita did something that surprised me as much as it did
Steven. Cooing softly she leaned forward toward his hard-on and with the
middle finger of her right hand flipped the head of his penis as hard as she
could with the nail side of the finger. His eyes grew bigger and he yelped
"Ow!" as his prick shrank back to normal size almost instantly and Juanita
went back to smoothing salve on his injured crotch.

I started the motor home and drove slowly away from the cemetery,
unsure of what to do, but firm in the conviction that I had somehow to get
Susie and Stephanie back, even if it meant killing the Mexicans. Even if it
meant killing Juanita's father.
