Night Noises
My niece and nephew had come to stay with me for a couple of weeks in the
summer. Nadine and Teddy's folks -- my brother and sister-in-law, had gone on a
second honeymoon to Europe after years of marriage. Shortly after they came to
stay I began to notice noises at night -- low, muffled moans in the darkness,
coming from down the hallway. The noises would stop after about ten or twenty
minutes. I figured that it was my niece, Nadine, talking in her sleep.
The noises continued for about a week, then one night they were particularly
loud. I could plainly hear moans and groans, and the sound of bedsprings
bouncing. I got up from my bed and crept down the hall silently. The sounds were
coming from Nadine's room. I put my ear to the door, and I could plainly hear
