Requiem - Chapter 2

By Danyealle ( plot, nosex )

When Aynica was in her last year of college all hell broke loose. Like most people she and those in her dorm were horrified by it. Like most people, over the next few days they were glued to the TV, watching the nightmare unfold.

Eventually the dorm became a bit of a battleground with those on both sides of the issue arguing at least once a day over what was going on. Inevitably shouting matches between the factions, ones that almost came to blows becoming more and more frequent. Not wanting to get involved or takes sides on the issue, she kept to herself and avoided people who were part of either side so she wouldn't be dragged into the no-win situation. As the days passed and the tense feeling filled the dorm, people began to leave, dropping out of school. By graduation time more than half the student body had left the school.

As school began winding down, there was the usual job fair. Because she was a computer programming major several companies set up interviews with her.

Even though employers weren't allowed to ask applicants questions about their religion they found a way to maneuver around that law so they could ask in a roundabout or subtle manner. Companies who tried that bit she wouldn't even consider working for them no matter how good the money was. That seriously diminished the choice of jobs.

The last interview she had was quite different from any before it. She had been directed to a small, private club for the interview not an office or business. While the club was a business that wasn't the job she was applying for. Once inside she was directed to a table in the back.

As she approached the man seated there rose and looked at her, smiling a bit. After the introductions she sat down opposite him at the table. Since the first glimpse of him she had been unable to tear her eyes away. He was, from her point of view, the most handsome man she had ever seen. Standing 6'6", he was husky man. Unlike so many others who had a similar body structure, his bulk was all muscle. Then there was his hair; a platinum blonde so light in color that it seemed to glow in the diffuse lighting. His facial features were almost true perfection. They were rugged but not overly so infused with just a hint of angelic perfection. It was his eyes that seemed to draw her in. They were blue, a shade that matched the color of the sky on a clear, summer day. It also seemed that they were almost hypnotic, seeming to lock on to you and pull you in.

After introducing himself as Lex, owner of a company named WW Globalization, he got down to business, going over her application and asking questions about the normal things. Once he was done with that he gave her a brief overview of what he wanted her for and what the job was. In a nutshell he needed a communications network set up. He was setting up something global to make communications easier. Because of the scale of the project he knew it would take years to finish it.

Once he gave a bit of an overview of the project she asked a few questions about some of the details and how he wanted it done. While they talked about specifics her mind was racing, trying to put together and visualize what he was asking for.

Leaning forward, forearms resting on the edge of the desk, he asked, "Do you think you will be able to pull it off? Or is it too big of a project for your first job? If you want it, it's yours. "

Smiling, she shook her head, "It's not too big or complicated. In fact it'll be something that's fairly easy to set up, just time consuming is all. I think it's something I can handle. I'll take it."

Pulling the contract his lawyer had already drawn up for the job out of his briefcase, he sat it on the table next to his elbow. Looking over at her, there was a serious look on his face. "Before you sign there is a variable that you need to know about. It wouldn't be ethical of me to let you sigh without telling you."

Cocking her head slightly to the side she looked at him, slight frown on her face. "It's nothing illegal, is it?"

Shaking his head a bit he said, "Oh no, nothing illegal. It's all legitimate and above board." Locking eyes with her he went on, "I'm a werewolf and WW Globalization is owned by the werewolf council. While I own this particular branch of it the council is the ultimate owner."

Arching an eyebrow, she looked at him intently, "A werewolf?"

Nodding, "Yes Aynica, a werewolf."

Unlike so many others in the world she knew that garou were no myth. She had a cousin who had been bitten by one and he was one himself now. "You know my cousin don't you? That's the reason you gave me the application, isn't it"

A small ghost of a smile lifted up the corners of his mouth. "Yes, I know Rory. When we were starting out designing the project he suggested that we hire you. Not only were you qualified you're damn good at what you do from what he told me. He had shown me some of the programs you've written as well as talked about things you've done.

"But, to be honest, the fact that he's your cousin and that you do know the garou exist is a big plus. If push came to shove we would have hired an ignorant, non-knowing human but wouldn't have been comfortable with the situation. This projects calls for the programmer to be in contact with or work closely with my species. The chance of a slip up on our part or something beyond our control exposing us for what we are to a human is something we don't want to risk."

Nodding, she understood that reasoning. It made a great deal of sense as well. Werewolves have made sure that humans didn't know they were real all over the world. They had hidden for centuries, to have to be in close contact with someone you are trying to keep a secret from is a recipe for disaster. It's very easy to relax and become complacent but by doing that you always increase the odds of being found out.

All of a sudden something hit her out of the blue. Giving him a sharp look, she asked, "This system has nothing to do with a business, does it? What is it for if it's not that?"

Shrugging his broad shoulders, he sighed. "No, it doesn't have anything to do with business." Suddenly, the expression on his face hardened then his eyes narrowed and took on a glint of anger.

"Look at what's going on in the world. If it keeps up the way it is now or escalates any more it won't be long before everyone is going to end up in the middle of a war no one will win. All the clans are making arrangements to get out of harm's way to somewhere that would be less dangerous. Once settled we need a communications system that doesn't rely on human run companies. We are also putting in place the ground work for producing natural power supplies that are independent from the rest of the world. Once we get that in place we are going to TRY to put a stop to the madness that's spanning the globe. Something has to be done to put an end to the idiocy before it's too late!" he snapped tone cold as ice with a sharpness of a knife.

Stopping, he shut his eyes then took a couple deep breaths to clamp down on his anger before it got the better of him. Once composed he looked back at her. "I'm sure you've seen just how bad things are around the world. As bad as it is now it probably is going to keep escalating. Right now it's the governments, and those that run them, they are targeting. But that won't last. Already the different religions are sniping at each other. Even different sects within religions are starting that as well. It won't be long before they are not just targeting the governments but will be going after each other as well."

Shaking her head sadly, "I know. There is no respite from this nightmare. I agree; I don't see anything improving in the near future, only deteriorating."

"If you take the job we can move you. You can stay with my clan. That should be relatively safe. Well safer than most places in the world at this point in time. You'll still be able to contact relatives or come and go as you like, just like now. All it will really be is moving into a new residence."

Quickly, she ran the pros and cons of the offer through her head. After a couple minutes she looked at him, "Let's do it."

Grinning, he winked.
