Chapter 7

Looking at her as she stared into the fire he had to fight down the urge to slide over to her and take her into his arms, to just hold her close. For the last few months whenever he saw her he could sense a deep sadness and some of that fire he had loved so much, the stuff that he first saw when she popped him a good one after he kidnapped her was in hiding. Every time he saw that he had to strangle the urge to beat Inuyasha within an inch of his life, knowing that damned mutt was the cause of it.

From the time she had held him in her arms and 'sat' Inuyasha to keep him from attacking after he had been injured by that Bird of Paradise he had loved her. Most people would have let the hanyou attack since he had kidnapped her but not his Kagome. Since then she had always kept dog-breath from going after him. Even from the first time he had seen her look at Inuyasha he knew she loved him, deeply too. He also could see that the hanyou loved her but it wasn't with the same intensity. The half-breeds heart also belonged to someone else and Kagome had come second. That was enough to make him want to slap some sense into the mutt.

When she had shown up out of the blue he was happy and stunned, hoping against hope it was a sign that the way she felt about him was changing. For a while that sadness and rather depressed aura was still there but it slowly evaporated and something else replaced it. He wasn't sure what it was but he finally had some real hope.

Yes, he already refereed to her as his Kagome, and in his heart she was already his, but he hadn't been able to convince her of it yet. He knew some thought he was foolish in his declaration of love to her and calling her 'his woman' but they never saw the look in her beautiful brown eyes when he would say it. Somewhere in their depths was a spark that only showed up when he said it. It was that spark that egged him on.

Sitting with her in this cave, as close as they were, he could smell her, that combination of soap she used and the stuff she washed her hair with combined with her natural smell always reminded him of wild flowers after a spring rain, a soft but beautiful smell. Yes, it was one of the hardest things he had ever done to just sit here this close to her alone and not to try to touch her but his instinct told him to wait. It had to be her to make the first move. Something, somewhere inside him told him it was coming and he rested his hopes on that, praying it was right.
