Chapter 6
Once dark fell and supper had been eaten they retired to the caves for the night. Ginta and Hakkaku along with the wolves took one and she and Kouga were in the other. Kouga felt that she needed a bit more privacy but didn't want to leave her alone. Giving her a solemn vow to be a perfect gentleman, something she believed without a shadow of a doubt, she had agreed.
After building a fire and laying out her sleeping bag they both sat and just talked. After a while, when the conversation had tapered off, she sat starting into the flames, knees bent with her arms folded and resting on her knees, chin propped on her wrists. Her mind began to wander into a very unfamiliar place.
For the first time in months she felt good. She had been able to laugh and have a good time. Unlike what had been the pattern of her life for so long now she didn't feel stressed out of worried, nor was she plagued by doubts like she usually was about everything anymore. She felt safe and secure.
But there was something new, somewhere in her something seemed to have opened and flooded her body with a wonderful feeling. Every time she looked in Kouga's blue eyes her insides started to quiver then feel like they were starting to melt and her heart would skip a beat then begin to hammer. She could feel her skin flush and tingle every time he touched her, no matter why he did or how light it was. It was as though down to the very depths of her soul her body was telling her it wanted him near her.
For the first time she noticed that, while he was rough and bit wild looking, he was a very sexy, handsome man; one that had stirred up more than a few pangs of lust in her. It made her wonder what it would be like to have him hold and kiss her. No not in a sexual way necessarily, although she was sure that if he did that a sexual something would follow very quickly, but just to be that close to her.
Since coming to the feudal era and starting the hunt for the jewel shards she had only had eyes for one man, Inuyasha. Somehow she had fallen, body, mind and soul, for him. But that had cooled off and part of it had been gone for a long time now. But when she saw Kouga after Sesshomaru had dropped her off it had returned full force. Tonight while eating supper when he had said she was his woman, like he usually did when he referred to her, her heart seemed to soar. Usually, when she heard that, she had other things on her mind-like keeping Inuyasha and Kouga from killing each other, so it didn't fully register.
Then, as the fire danced and snapped before her eyes, somewhere inside her that small voice she always listened to spoke. Yes, it told her she did love Inuyasha and always would but that was big, older, over-protective brother. It was Kouga that her heart, body and soul wanted. Sure, he was a bit like Inuyasha when it came to being subtle and was brash as well as loud but he also treated her so well and was respectful. That wasn't an act or a show he put on in front of Inuyasha. She found out he was the exact same way when he wasn't around. In fact, probably more so without him around along with he seemed to be a lot softer and quieter. As she thought of leaving for Edo the day after tomorrow and going back to the same old, same old, her mind rebelled, not wanting to even think about it, only wanting to think about staying with Kouga.
But her rational side did step in, warning her that she need to be sure of this before she jumped in. It admitted that he was honorable and that she could trust him, but she had to ask to be sure. She could believe him when he answered but she had to ask.
