Chapter 5
Both Sango and Miroku sighed as they watched Inuyasha pace the floor of the hut, cursing and snarling about Sesshomaru. By this time his 'theory' about the youkai's ulterior motives had shoved aside all earlier thoughts about Kagome.
After a particularly long harangue where he laid out all the 'evidence' he had against Sesshomaru he glared at both of them, "Well? " he sneered, "Am I right or not?"
Sighing, Miroku shook his head, "Inuyasha, While I'm sure Sesshomaru has some kind of motive for the whole thing I don't think this is it. He quit trying to get your sword long ago."
"Yeah, well, maybe that's what he wants me to think so he can get to me lower my guard. That sneaky bastard!"
Rolling her eyes, Sango groaned and shook her head.
Whipping around, Inuyasha glared at her, "What was that for? You think I'm wrong too?"
This wasn't going to end well no matter what she said as she was well aware, so she figured she might as well voice her opinion. "I agree with Miroku, he has a motive but I don't think it's what you think it is."
"Why else would he make up all that shit and try to get me all worked up then?"
Looking at him, the exterminator shook her head, "I don't know what he's up to and we probably won't know until he wants us to but he didn't make up anything Inuyasha. If you remember both Miroku and I have brought up most of what he said to you before. We just did it in a more tactful way is all."
Narrowing his eyes, he fixed her with an icy stare, "What? You think I'm being mean to the poor, sweet, loveable Kagome too? That the abused girl should get away from me?" He snarled. "I guess I'm the villain of the whole thing and she's never done anything to bring part of it on herself!"
That was it for Sango, her temper snapped. Fixing him with a glare that made Miroku's balls try to climb back up into his body in sympathy, she snarled at him, "No, I think you're a complete and utter jackass that doesn't give a rat's ass about the feelings of the one being in this world who has loved you unconditionally and stuck with you through everything. She has patiently waited for you to decide what you want to be to her."
"Let me tell you something Inuyasha, you're damn lucky it's her and not me. I would have cut you loose long ago and moved on. I can't understand why she puts up with all the crap from you!"
"Well, I never asked her to wait for me, now did I? That was her own choice!" Inuyasha snarled back.
"Maybe not in so many words you didn't but who is it that chases every man that even dares look at her away? Who gets upset when she spends time away from him? You, Inuyasha! You do all those things and strong her along, giving her hope that you want to be more than friends and she means something to you!"
"It's her choice!" He shouted back. "She knows what Kikyo means to me. If she wants more she is just going to have to wait."
"IF that's the case then TELL HER ! Let her see other people until that happens."
"No! Her place is by me. She will just have to stick it out until Kikyo is gone."
Face flushed red; Sango gave him a look that made him cringe. "You can't have it both ways Inuyasha! Either quit stringing her alone and cut her loose or be with her. She has feelings just like you do and you are hurting her a great deal with this stupidity!"
"How in the fuck am I hurting her? She knows what's going on and what Kikyo means to me!"
"She does but you are sending her every mixed message in the book. One day you're fine with her and act like she's the only thing that matters. The next day you call her every foul name you can think of and treat her like she's a worthless piece of trash you only tolerate because she can find jewel shards. Then you run off to Kikyo."
Stepping closer to him, her eyes narrowed and she gave him a look that made him take a couple steps back. "She loves you with all her heart Inuyasha. She would do anything for you and anything to make you happy. That's why she puts up with crap. It doesn't matter to her what you are or what people think of you, she loves you just like you are and doesn't want you to change. Kikyo wanted you to become human; Kagome loves you as a half-demon. She doesn't care about anything else. Yet you are too stupid to see that!"
"Stupid? Are you calling me stupid?" he growled.
"Yes, I am. You're a stupid jackass that uses and abuses the one being in this world that truly loves you! And in your arrogance and over-inflated sense of self worth justify your actions, not caring what you're doing to the person on the receiving end of it!"
After glaring at him one more time she started towards the door. Before stepping outside she turned and looked at the red-faced and obviously furious hanyou. "I never thought I'd say this but I agree with Sesshomaru. I hope like hell a couple days in Kouga's company make her realize what a real man is and that she drops you like a bad habit!" Then she was gone, Kirara following her.
Snarling at the now empty doorway, he turned his flashing eyes to the monk who was standing and looking at him but hadn't uttered a word. "Well, what do you say about the whole thing pervert? You gonna take her side as usual?"
"There are no 'sides' to this Inuyasha." Miroku sighed. "I think we all can understand what you feel for Kikyo. Sango and I are well aware of how half-demons are treated. It's also a pretty good guess on our end that life for you must have been rough. Having someone love and care for you for the first time must have been a powerful thing. Now that she's back, and your loyalty to her as well as all those feelings are back too, it's understandable. But in the time Kikyo was gone things have changed and so have you.
"None of us that are with you care you are a half demon, all we care about is the being named Inuyasha. He's our friend and what breed of being he is don't matter. Believe it or not Inuyasha, you aren't alone in this world anymore. You have people close to you that love and care for you in many different ways. We've stuck by you through everything because we do care.
"I also think off of us are aware that Kikyo probably has no plans to remain here indefinitely. She has something she wants to do and then she will move on, or at least that's the sense we get. We also understand that you're loyal to her and want to spend as much time with her as possible before she goes. Am I right?"
Nodding, Inuyasha looked at him.
Sighing, Miroku softened his voice. "You have to understand, Inuyasha, that by the time Kikyo moves on there is no guarantee that Kagome will be there waiting for you." Sensing the tirade the half-demon was about to let loose with, the monk held up his hand, "Wait until I finish, Inuyasha."
"Despite what you may think Kagome's problem isn't jealously over Kikyo and what you feel for her. It does make it hard on her and hurts to a certain degree but if that was the case Kagome would never have saved her life like she's done. Part of the reason is it was just the right thing to do but also because she doesn't want to see you hurt. The real problem is an accumulation of things. The way you treat her, talk to her, things that have happened, all she has gone through and still is going through. But most of all, the fact that Kagome has changed.
"You may not have noticed because it was so gradual but she has changed a lot in the last few years. All she has gone through would change anyone. Other than Shippo, she was the youngest of all of us when this started. Now she is an adult, both mentally and physically. She isn't the young girl you met anymore. She's a very strong, determined young woman that's just as capable of taking care of herself as we are. I know you don't see that though. In many ways Kagome will always be to you just the way she was when you met her but that Kagome is gone Inuyasha. Forever.
"I doubt you've noticed but over the last few months she's changed even more. She's very unhappy. I overheard her and Sango talking one day and Kagome said most times when she goes home she doesn't want to come back. That she has to force herself to do it. The stress of what we are doing and the battle with Naraku is enough to do that to anyone. But she also has to come back to fighting with you, being talked down to, called names and many other things. Up until a few months ago she gave it right back now she doesn't, she doesn't think it's worth the effort. It's like she's given up and knuckled under to you. That's scary coming from such a strong woman."
"Let her stay in her own time then." Inuyasha snorted but with no real force to it. What the monk was telling him made him think and remember what he had considered before returning to the village.
"Do you really think Kagome can go back to her time and resume her life where she left off? She can't Inuyasha! She told both Sango and myself that she no longer fits in there, that she feels like a stranger because of what she has to deal with here. The reality is that this time is now Kagome's home and life. This is where she will always belong, not her own time. Now she is just a visitor there. This mission, quest, path, whatever you want to call it, and us is her life now, she can no longer go back to what she had. She's lost or given up everything for it, just like what all of us have lost or given up. Now she doesn't know what to do, she can't go back and what is her life now is making her miserable. And no, that isn't all your fault."
"What am I expected to do about that? I can't change it!" Inuyasha huffed, glaring at the monk.
"You could try laying off the name calling and treat her better. That could make a world of difference." Miroku sighed.
"Keh… She needs to fix things for herself and just deal with it. She knows this is the way I am." He snorted but did make a vow to himself to lay off the miko a bit.
"Do you remember when Kouga started coming around and Sango and I both warned you that you needed to take him more seriously?"
"Yeah, but it wasn't like that flea-bitten wolf could take Kagome away from me. You should know that!"
Letting out a sigh of exasperation, Miroku shook his head, "Inuyasha, we weren't talking about him taking her away from you."
"What did you mean then? That she was going to fall for all that crap he spews? No way, she's too smart to fall for that shit."
"Inuyasha, "Miroku said, staring hard at him, "what Kouga says to her isn't crap or an act just to get her attention or toy with you, he means every word of it! That isn't an act either, that is the way Kouga is. Not only that but he is her friend. He's been there for her to talk to when she needed someone and given her a shoulder to cry on when she's needed that. She adores him as a friend just like she does Sango and I."
"He's also seen the way you treat her and how you talk to her. You have given him every bit of ammunition he needs to win her over. Add to that Kagome feels that you are pushing her away or just plain don't want her and how unhappy she is right now and that's a deadly combination!"
Stunned, Inuyasha gave the monk a wide-eyed, slightly wild look as his words started sinking in. "What do you mean by that?" he shouted, voice rising in pitch.
"Think about it Inuyasha…" Miroku said, giving him a light tap on the head with his staff for emphasis, "Kagome is on hold in your life until Kikyo leaves. Kagome is depressed and upset. Kouga loves her, is kind to her, showers her with affection and pledges of undying love that he means every word of. Stir in a thick-headed half-demon that treats her badly and is spending all his time with his dead, resurrected first love. Then add into the equation the fact that the upset Kagome is now spending a couple days alone with the ookami that loves her with all his heart and what do you think is going to happen you damn fool?!?!?!" Miroku shouted.
All the color drained out of Inuyasha's face and his jaw dropped open. All he could mutter was a toneless, weak, "Oh shit!"
"Oh shit is right you dense fool! By the time she leaves Kouga if she hasn't decided to dump you as a romantic interest you better get down on your knees and thank whichever Kami decided to step in on your behalf because it will be a miracle! One of a magnitude that I have never witnessed before and probably will never see again in my lifetime! Because I have the sinking feeling that by now it's already too late!" The monk yelled at him.
All Inuyasha's racing mind could think to do was to place blame at that point in time, "That bastard Sesshomaru! This is all his fucking fault!" He screamed.
Grabbing Inuyasha's elbow, Miroku looked at him, eyes cold. "No Inuyasha, it isn't. He may have been the catalyst for it but any blame that needs laid belongs to both you and Kagome. You can't blame your brother for creating the situation!"
Too agitated to think, Inuyasha yanked his arm away and ran his fingers through his hair, eyes bugging out. "I gotta find her! I have to get her away from that flea-bitten wolf!"
"You can't! You remember what Sesshomaru said; he will fight you the whole way. He doesn't make idle threats like that! You would be lucky if you were in one piece by the time you got there Inuyasha! Best you can do is hope like hell it doesn't happen!"
Even though his mind was now so chaotic he knew Miroku was right. If he wasn't so agitated and upset he might have a chance to find a way to slip by his brother if he was watching, and he had the feeling Lord Asshole was doing just that, but as he was now and the state he was in he wouldn't stand a chance.
Legs giving out he sunk to the floor and put his head in his hands, silently he began to plead with Kagome and tell her he was sorry. Hoping like hell that she would get the message somehow.
Looking at his stricken friend, Miroku shook his head sadly. Both he and Sango had known this day was bound to come sooner or later and that the hanyou had brought most of it on himself but they had hoped that somehow the dense half-breed would see what was coming and straighten up. While he understood it was coming it was still sad to see. He also wasn't sure if wanted Kagome to stay with Inuyasha, he wasn't sure if that was what was best for the miko. Sighing, he slipped out of the hut quietly and went to find Sango.
=========
Inuyasha was right, his brother was watching. Standing in the tree line outside the village his youkai hearing had allowed him to listen in on the conversation with both the exterminator and the monk. The monk had assessed it correctly, he wasn't bluffing. He had told the miko the hanyou wouldn't disturb her and being a man of his word he planned to ensure that he didn't. If it meant a battle with his brother then so be it.
