Chapter 4
Standing there alone, in the clearing around the well that brought Kagome to them, Inuyasha stood quietly, eyes still locked on the place where is brother had vanished. His face was a blank mask, passive and slightly pale, but his mind was racing at the speed of light and his heart was hammering heavily, as though he had run a great distance at top speed. While the surrounding woods teemed with the normal sounds all he could hears was the blood pounding in his ears.
Standing there, he realized for the very first time since they met that someone was truly trying to take Kagome from him. Up to this point, despite his jealous behavior, he knew she wouldn't leave him for anyone else. Yes, she would get angry and go home but she would always come back. Her feelings for him really hadn't changed no matter what, she was always there and always would be. Or so he thought until a short time ago.
Despite what people may have thought, he loved the futuristic miko fiercely, not as just a friend either. He fully intended to make her his mate some day, just not for a while yet. While Kikyo was still in this realm he planned on spending as much time with her as he could. He knew that she just wanted to take care of a few things and see Naraku finished off then she was going to pass to the next realm, she had no intention of trying to get her body back or remain here indefinitely. Until she was gone Kagome was just going to have to wait is all. He was pretty sure she would understand and would wait for him.
Over the past few years the members of his pack had told him several times that Kagome wouldn't wait for him forever, that he had to quit stringing her along like he was and either make it clear that they weren't meant to be or that they were. Then, when Kouga started coming around with his bold declarations of love and such, both Miroku and Sango had warned him to take him seriously. Of course he didn't buy that load of garbage. She was his and wouldn't leave him nor could the ookami take her away. She wouldn't fall for crap like he was spewing. But somewhere in him he was now seriously worried.
Thinking over what Sesshomaru had said, all he could do was shake his head at it. First question that came to mind was since when did Lord Asshole develop a protective nature when it came to Kagome? Sure his brother had changed a bit over the years and seemed to have softened a bit but not enough to explain the scene earlier. Through there had been times in the past year or so that seemed to indicate that he had grown fond of her in some way. Sango and Miroku had voiced the opinion that it might be because Rin, his human ward, was very similar in looks and personality to Kagome. In fact several people had pointed that out to him. Also, part of it may be that the Western Lord felt he owed the miko a debt.
A little over a year ago Run had been snatched by a bear demon. While no one knew for sure they felt it was under Naraku's' control because I had a jewel shard embedded in its back. Both Jaken and the dragon, Ah-Un, had been almost killed in its attack and were unable to stop it from taking the child. By sheer blind luck Kagome had stumbled across the girl while out looking for a plant. The child was badly injured by that time and the beast had been about to finish her off when Kagome killed it with one of her sacred arrows.
It was Kagome's skills as a healer that had saved the child. Being all about respect and honor Sesshomaru may well feel that he owes the miko for saving her this was his way of repaying her. As for him having an interest in her as a mate, he knew that was a crock of shit. Something to bait him with at the time, and it had worked too.
Flopping down by the well he leaned back against the rough, wooden plans and shut his eyes, sighing. He wondered if he really was as bad as his brother made him out to be. Sure he was gruff and a hard ass but she known that since the beginning. That was just the way he was. Yes, he called her names at times but he's always done that too. He was sure that she knew he didn't mean anything by it. A conversation he had with the monk about the topic drifted back to him.
When Miroku had brought up the topic he had given him the same answer. The monk's response had startled him. Basically he said that while she may know he didn't mean anything by it didn't mean it didn't hurt. Plus, if you heard it often enough you start to believe it. Sighing, he blew out a lung-full of air. Alright, maybe he did need to stop calling her names. Maybe he should try to be less gruff and pay a bit more attention to her as well. It couldn't hurt anything.
His mind wandered back over the last few months and he frowned. What he was remembering bothered him. Was she starting to drift away from him? Could it be that she was now of the mindset that could lead to her finding someone else? He really didn't know but there were signs that something was up with her that he wasn't able to see until now. A month or so ago Sango had pointed out to him that Kagome seemed to be a lot quieter and a bit withdrawn. She didn't talk to them as much as he used to and seemed to spend more time alone than normal. At the time he didn't think anything of it. They had been through some rough times and a couple serious battles so all of them were a bit tired and their sprits a bit lower than normal. He figured she would snap out of it but she still hadn't.
Thinking back, about that time there was a change he had noticed. She had quit arguing with him. That was something he had liked though. It was nice to be able to say or do something and not have her jump on him about it. Letting him make decisions without arguing with her was great too. But that wasn't his Kagome. His Kagome was a strong and feisty woman with a mind of her own. That was something he had always liked about her. For her to say it wasn't worth arguing over or to do what he thought was best had felt good at the time but now it bothered him. What was wrong with her? He didn't know.
Sighing again, he shook his head. Getting to his feet, he started towards Edo, mentally berating Sesshomaru for the whole mess.
By the time he reached Kaede's hut his train of thought had switched tracks. Instead of Kagome he was fixated on his brother and had managed to at least partially convince himself that this was all a trap set by him to steal his sword again and see how miserable he could make him. If he were able to create enough doubts and questions about Kagome then he would be able to find a way to get what he wanted.
