Chapter 3
By the time they got to the well both Miroku and Sango had a headache from Inuyasha's bitching and complaining about Kagome. As the well came into view it was obvious she wasn't there, which started another round of complaints. That quit quickly when he picked up both her scent and Sesshomaru's.
Before he could begin the next round of bitching Sesshomaru emerged from the trees. He walked past Inuyasha without a word, as if he wasn't even there, and then went over to the monk and exterminator.
Handing Sango the package from Kagome he said gruffly, "The miko asked that I deliver this to you. She left you a note in it as well."
Quickly, Sango put the bag down, grabbing the note from it, scanning it quickly.
"What are you now? A lowly messenger for Kagome?" Inuyasha sneered, trying to goad the youkai.
Once again, Sesshomaru ignored him completely, acting as though he hadn't said anything.
Confused, Sango looked up at him. "If I may ask, did she say where she was going? Sorry, but this isn't like Kagome. She doesn't just take off without telling us where she's going. It has me a bit worried."
"Keh… Yeah, she needs to get her ass back her so we can get going." Inuyasha sneered.
Sighing, Miroku shot the hanyou a look that he hoped would shut him up but he knew it wouldn't work.
"The miko is well and safe." The Western Lord told her calmly.
Nodding, relieved, she then asked politely, "Please, where is she?"
"Yeah, so we can go get the wench. She has a job to do." Inuyasha piped in.
Sango could see the Western Lords' face tighten as he began to get irritated by Inuyasha's stupidity but he answered in his normal gruff and silken tone. "The ookami prince and part of his pack weren't far from here, they've since moved on," he added to get the point across to Inuyasha that he needn't bother trying to find them, "when she arrived so she decided to spend a couple days with them. He'll make sure she's protected and will deliver her safely to Edo."
Of all the beings in the world that could send him into a frothing fit of rage Kouga was the worst. The mere mention of his name would set him off. "What the fuck?!?! Why in the hell did that stupid bitch do that?" Inuyasha screamed, outraged.
Both the monk and exterminator turned a bit pale and stepped back when they saw the red beginning to bleed into the powerful youkai's eyes.
Turning, Sesshomaru gazed at his half-brother, who, for once in his life had the good sense to take a couple steps back and stop the tirade, then said, his voice a steel dagger covered with silk, "It was my suggestion half-breed."
Eyes bugging out, Inuyasha stared at his brother with his mouth handing open. "What the hell?!?! Why would you suggest something like that?" he bellowed, voice rising. "Why would she want to spend time with that flea-ridden wolf?"
"Shall we start with the fact that he isn't the complete idiot you are Inuyasha?" Sesshomaru sneered.
"What the fuck do you mean by that, asshole?" Inuyasha screamed.
Narrowing his eyes, Sesshomaru said, "Where were you when she came back? Why didn't you meet her here like you do most times little brother? Were you off indulging in a bit of necrophilia with the dead miko?"
Before the hanyou could do more than sputter, Sesshomaru pressed on. "How easily would it have been for Naraku to snatch her? If he did he would have all the shards you have collected. Plus, he would have a sure fire way to find the remaining ones. Not only that, he would also get someone with a great deal power. He could very easily manipulate her or force her to use them against us."
Pointing one long, clawed finger hat him, he sneered, "If I remember right half-breed, you promised her protection. But like most everything else in your life you're a miserable failure at it."
"Since when do you give a damn about humans?" Inuyasha shot back. "They're worthless as you've pointed out many times."
"Your miko, monk and exterminator have proven to me countless times, in battle, and that they are worthy of my respect. They treat me respectfully and I, in return, will reciprocate it. Too bad I can't say the same for you little brother.
"Your miko adores you Inuyasha, most everyone can see that. Yet in this short conversation how many vile names have you called her? She has stood by you, tended to you, cared for you, fought by your side as well as countless other things. Your response is to call her names that even I didn't when I was trying to kill you. She's earned your respect and loyalty half-breed, many times over. Yet you treat her like she is less than dirt." Sesshomaru growled.
"Why do you care how I treat her? It's also none of your damned business!"
Because you are disgracing your father and I because our blood flows in your veins." Sesshomaru growled back. "That kind of behavior is low even for you Inuyasha."
Ignoring the jabs, Inuyasha growled. "You didn't need to send her off with that stupid wolf! You could have easily had this conversation with her around. You know that quite well so why did you suggest it?"
Glaring at him, Sesshomaru hissed, "In hopes that she will learn what a real man is and that she deserves to be treated better. She most definitely needs to learn that men aren't all like you little brother."
That verbal jab below the belt had even left Inuyasha speechless. The other two humans stood there, in shock, eyes bulging and mouth hanging open. Sesshomaru has always done a good job of winding Inuyasha up and take him apart verbally but this was more like watching a careful dissection of someone. Be that as it may, it was also very satisfying to hear someone take Inuyasha to task and say the things they had wanted to so many times.
Quietly Inuyasha asked, all malice and anger gone from his face, "Why Kouga? There are plenty of other beings to use for that, why pick him?" He didn't want his brother seeing any reaction he may have and give him more ammunition to use on him
Piercing his half-breed brother with a stare that could have frozen hell over he said, "I hope she will find that the ookami prince is worthy of her affections and that maybe she shows some of the feelings about him that he does when it comes to her."
"And if she doesn't?" Inuyasha asked stunned, face blank and voice toneless.
Staring Inuyasha dead square in the eyes and stepping closer to him, Sesshomaru hissed quietly, "Then maybe I'll consider give it a shot, one never knows what may happen." He had no intentions what-so-ever in taking the miko as a mate or to do what he said but he knew that would send Inuyasha reeling and then yank him back into reality so he could see the error of his ways and straighten up.
Inuyasha looked as though he was going to have a heart attack and stroke at the same time. Sango rubbed her eyes and pinched herself to make sure it wasn't a dream because the whole thing had an almost surrealistic feeling to it. All the monk could do was stand there with his mouth hanging open.
"What?" Inuyasha asked in almost a whisper.
"Do you realize Inuyasha how many men would give up everything they have to be in your position? To have a woman like your miko by ones side and sharing your affections with her is something most men would give their right arm and everything they own up for it.
"Like it or not Inuyasha you are probably going to have some competition with her."
Narrowing his eyes a bit, the Western Lord, glared at the other man. "Before you even consider it, don't go chasing after the ookami and leave her alone for a while. If you try and find her I will fight you the whole way. Go to Edo and wait. While waiting I suggest you think about the way you act towards her." Stepping back, he nodded to the humans Sesshomaru then disappeared into the trees.
Looking at each other, Sango and Miroku started the return trip without even a word. Inuyasha just stood there, alone, staring at the place his brother had occupied.
