Anna had gotten less than 100 meters down the road when Peti caught up
to her, calling out, "Wait, Anna, wait." A clatter of footfalls behind
him evidenced that he was not alone. Although Peti and the boys would
rather she stay with them longer, but either out of contrition or from
a sense of responsibility, they agreed to help her clean up to return
to her hotel.

Producing handkerchiefs and even a wad of tissues, and wanting to help
her, especially with the smears on her breasts, the boys finally just
accepted her thanks and watched her wipe away their goo. She
straightened her clothing, buttoning up the blouse and, donning her
sweater once again, covering its stained condition.

Clearly, the events had elevated Peti's stature among the group, for
they dispersed at his bidding, although looking to János for approval-
old habits die hard. Then Anna, in the company of Peti, returned to the
town. The waning light of the late afternoon helped disguise any
remaining disarray.

He escorted her back to the spa, where, thankfully, the lobby was
almost deserted. She firmly bade him goodbye at the elevator.

Anna showered, changed clothes and picked somewhat listlessly at the
buffet-style supper, but the following day, her spirits were brighter
and she enjoyed the mineral baths before taking the afternoon train
back to Budapest.

Peti wrote her several times in the ensuing weeks, imploring her to
write back and "be my friend," but although she kept writing to Dori,
she never answered any of Peti's.
