A Different Sort Of Lifestyle
Chapter 14: A Moment of Madness

After school Friday, Harry and Lisa decided to sneak away to the
woods behind the high school for a short make out session. It was
tough for them to have a place to kiss where they wouldn't be
observed. They weren't the first kids from the school to slip off
into the woods, although that afternoon they were the only kids to
head into the woods.

Having learned that her father loved her the previous weekend;
Lisa did not feel the same need to get male approval. As a result,
the relationship between her and Harry had slowed down a little.
That isn't to say that it had stalled. It just meant that she was
willing to allow Harry to work a little more for access to her body.
For both of them, the pace was thrilling enough.

Harry wasn't even aware of the change in her. The relationship
was proceeding plenty fast enough for him. There was lots of
kissing and hugging. He still hadn't slipped a hand under her shirt,
but he had caressed her breasts through the shirt. He would have
been surprised if she hadn't kept things at the current pace.

They had just reached a spot where they would be granted a little
privacy when there was a noise behind them. They turned and
looked back the way they had come. What they saw made their
blood freeze in their veins. A medium sized man was wrestling a
boy to the ground while trying to wrap the boy's wrists with duct
tape. There was already a patch of duct tape over the boy's mouth.

Once boy's wrists were bound, the man threw the boy to the
ground. There was a struggle while the man tried to pull the pants
off the boy. The kid was kicking and thrashing as much as he
could, but the man had him overpowered. The boy's fear was
strong enough that Harry and Lisa could smell it.

When Harry realized what was going on, he acted and acted
without any reservations or thoughts of self preservation. He
charged the man full out. He dove at the man without regard to
injury and made contact with his full body weight behind a single
fist. For the next few minutes, Harry was a wild animal. He hit,
slapped, jabbed, bit, scratched, kicked, squeezed, head-butted,
elbowed, and kneed his opponent. He took every opportunity that
arose to make forceful contact with the body of the man.

It is a fact that the outcome of a fight is not always determined by
size, weight, or strength. Ask anyone who has tried to give a cat a
bath if a ten to one advantage in size, weight, and strength was
sufficient to ensure that the cat ended up clean. It is the ferocity of
the combatants that is often the critical difference between the
winner and loser of a fight. That afternoon, two years of pent up
anger and frustration at his parents burst loose. Harry was
ferocious.

Becoming a little more aware of his surroundings, Harry found that
he was being held upside down in the air by his arms and legs. He
struggled, but the grips on his arms and legs were too strong. He
heard a voice say, "Jesus, don't let go of him."

"He already gave me a black eye," said another man.

Harry heard Lisa shout, "Don't hurt him!"

Looking at the ground from his upside down position, Harry could
just make out a bloody mass in front of him. He didn't know if it
was the boy or the guy he had attacked. If it was the boy, he knew
that he was in serious trouble. He twisted to see who was holding
one of his legs and found he was staring at the football coach. The
man had a bloody nose. While attempting to process that
information, Harry's brain decided that it was time to take a
vacation.

Lisa, biting her knuckles, watched as the football coach and three
of the players lowered a suddenly limp Harry to the ground.
Afraid, she asked, "Is he all right?"

The coach looked down at Harry and said, "I think he's fainted.
Chuck, get the Principal and tell him to call 911."

Although it was too late to prevent Chuck from his errand, the
assistant coach looked up from the other boy on the ground and
said, "I already sent Doug to do that."

Kneeling down to examine Harry, the coach said, "Too bad we
don't have an extreme fighting team. I'd want this boy on it. He
definitely won that fight."

Lisa asked, "Is he all right?"

"It looks like he broke a finger and lost a nail. He got hit in the eye,
but I don't see any real damage to it. He's going to have a real
shiner in the morning. I don't see any other broken bones, but we'll
know more when he gets to the hospital." The coach checked for a
concussion but didn't see the obvious signs. He didn't have any
smelling salts with him.

"Hospital?" Lisa asked terrified that Harry was hurt really bad. He
had scared her to death when he had charged at the man.

"He broke a finger and he lost consciousness. He's going to the
hospital to be checked out," the coach said. He looked over at the
man lying on the ground. He wasn't going to waste any of his first
aid skills on that piece of trash.

"Is he going to be all right?"

He winced while dabbing at his nose with his handkerchief. The
cloth came away red with his blood. At least it didn't feel like his
nose was broken. Winking at Lisa, he said, "Don't worry. He's
small but tough."

One of the football players said, "I bet that guy outweighs him by
fifty pounds. I don't know how he did it."

The Principal of the school arrived and looked around. Puffing and
out of breath from the run from the office, he asked, "What
happened?"

"We saw that guy trying to rape Ted. Harry went after the guy and
now he's hurt."

The Principal went over to the man on the ground and bent down
to see if he recognized him. He paled and stepped back. Shocked,
he asked, "What happened to his eye?"

"Looks like Harry poked his eye out with a finger," the assistant
coach answered. Ted started to struggle to see the guy who had
attacked him. The assistant coach held Ted down and said, "You're
okay. Just relax. We're all friends here."

"Aren't you going to do something about it?" the Principal asked
staring at the bloody eye socket.

"No," the coach answered with a snort. He pointed to the two boys
on the ground and said, "We've got two injured students here and
they are our first responsibility. Yours, too. Leave that piece of shit
where he is. The cops will take care of him."

Feeling weak and helpless, Ted said, "I want that bastard dead."

While pointing to the bridge of his nose, the assistant coach said,
"Ted, look at me. Look me in the eyes. You're okay. He didn't get
you. Everything is going to be all right. Do you understand me?"

"He ..."

"It doesn't matter what he tried to do. You and Harry fought him
off."

"Harry? Who's Harry?" Ted asked. He had lost consciousness
about the time that Harry had attacked the man.

Lisa watched the drama unfold with wide eyes. She knew Ted. He
was one of the quietest boys in school. He was small for his age
and pretty smart, but he wasn't physically strong. Somehow he
always managed to travel below the radar of all the school bullies.
Without Harry's intervention, the man would have been able to do
whatever he wanted to Ted. She could only imagine what Ted must
have been feeling. She answered, "Harry Anders, my boyfriend."

On hearing that, the Principal looked at Lisa and then at Harry. He
knew exactly why they had been in the woods. Every day that
week he had told the kids during the morning announcement to
stay well away from the woods. Shaking his head, he asked,
"Didn't you hear me tell everyone to stay away from the woods?"

Harry groaned and his eyes fluttered open. He saw the coach
kneeling over him and started to struggle to get up. Leaning back
to protect his sore nose, the coach said, "Relax. You aren't in any
danger."

Lisa knelt down next to Harry and kissed him. She said, "Thank
God, you're all right."

"Did I stop him?" Harry asked once Lisa stopped kissing him.

Chuckling, the coach said, "You stopped him. You almost stopped
me with that backhand to the nose."

---

Worried and angry, Jack entered the hospital and paused to look
around for signs telling him where he was supposed to go. He was
almost knocked off his feet when Lisa ran into him and hugged
him. He was relieved to see that she was okay. The story that he
had gotten was something about an attempted rape involving Harry
and some other kid. He held Lisa for a moment and asked, "What
happened?"

"We saw a guy trying to rape Ted. Harry went after the guy," Lisa
answered.

Having watched the news for the past few weeks, Jack didn't have
to ask who the guy was to know that Harry had taken a real big
risk. He didn't say it, but he was very relieved to learn that Lisa
hadn't been the intended victim of rape. He asked, "Are you
okay?"

"I'm fine," she answered.

He asked, "How's Harry?"

"He's hurt, but not too bad. At least, that's what the coach said.
They brought him here to check for broken bones."

"Is the other kid okay?"

"Yes, Harry got to the guy before he was able to rape him. Ted was
hurt, but the coaches said that he would be okay."

"What happened to the guy?"

"Harry hurt him," Lisa answered. She was feeling proud of what
her boyfriend had done. She hadn't stayed to watch the fight. She
had run off to get some help and, without really thinking about it,
had gone to the football field where the junior varsity team was
playing a game.

The discussion was cut short with the arrival of Sharon. She
spotted Jack and cried out, "Where's Harry?"

"He's getting checked out by the doctors now," Lisa answered
while she pointed in the direction of the emergency room.

Without waiting for more of an answer, Sharon ran off to find out
more information. A few minutes later there was a muffled shriek
when she found him. Her scream had been cut off when Harry had
hugged her. Smiling, Jack said, "We know where Harry is."

June arrived and spotted them. Rushing over, she asked, "Are you
okay, baby girl?"

"I'm fine, mom. Harry stopped a man from raping Ted," Lisa
answered. Her words were muffled by the hug her mother was
giving her.

"All they told me was that there had been an attempted rape," June
said. She'd had visions of Jack's worries coming true.

A police officer came out and walked over to Lisa. Nodding to her
parents, he asked, "These are your parents?"

"Yes, sir."

"I'm Officer Dick Chapman. I need to take statement from your
daughter about the events in the woods behind the school," the
officer said addressing Jack and June.

"Can we sit down?"

"Actually, we have a small room where we'll talk. This is a pretty
high profile case," Dick said. He gestured over to a door down the
hall.

The family followed the officer to the room. It took almost a half
an hour to get the whole story out of Lisa. Jack listened to the story
trying to decide how he felt about it. The kids had been incredibly
stupid to enter the woods considering that there was a dangerous
man loose in the area. On the other hand, Harry had acted in a
rather heroic fashion. They remained in the room after the officer
had left.

Seeing the concerned expression on her father's face, Lisa figured
she was in trouble. Worried, she asked, "What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking that you both are very lucky," Jack said. He sighed
and looked at June. She looked just as worried as he felt. Smiling,
he said, "Lisa, why don't you go check on the hero?"

After looking at both her parents, Lisa raced out of the room.
Turning back to June, Jack said, "It's a dangerous world out there."

"Yes, it is," June agreed with a shiver.

"I don't want her sneaking off into the woods anymore. I don't
want her in the backseat of a car," Jack said. There was a dull
finality to his words.

Afraid of what he was going to say next, June said, "You can't
stop them from seeing each other."

"I know. I'd rather have them at home where they're safe," Jack
said looking down at the floor with a frown.

"What are you saying?"

"Let her bring the boy to her bedroom. We'll respect her privacy
until she screams for help," Jack said. Shaking his head, he said,
"At least that way we'll know she's safe."

"Not entirely," June said thinking about what would happen when
two teenagers were left alone in a bedroom. It was a good thing
that she had already made an appointment to get her birth control
pills.

"Get her protection," Jack said knowing that his wife would
understand what he was saying. He stood up and walked out of the
room feeling miserable. In the hall, he said, "You try to protect
them, but you can't really do that."

From behind, Greg said, "I know what you mean."

"Oh, I didn't know you were there," Jack said turning to face Greg.
"Your son did something that was very brave."

"And stupid," Greg said.

"Yes. I fear that I'm doing something that isn't brave and is very
stupid," Jack said figuring that Greg would hear about his decision
anyway. Without either man noticing, June slipped around Jack to
see how Sharon was doing.

"What?"

"I don't want the kids sneaking off into the woods to do their
kissing. I'd rather have them in her bedroom," Jack said looked at
Greg.

Nodding his head, Greg looked at the floor and, in a sad voice,
said, "I just told my wife the same thing for Cathy. I didn't feel
right about suggesting it for Harry until after talking to you."

"I appreciate the consideration," Jack said. He hadn't given any
thought to how Greg would feel upon learning how close his son
had been to being the victim of a rapist.

"We were thinking of eating dinner at a local restaurant once they
release Harry. Would you like to join us?"

"Sure," Jack answered thinking it was just a little more credit card
debt. It dawned on him that it was Friday night. He said, "It's
Friday night."

"I don't think any of us are feeling very romantic tonight," Greg
said with a soft laugh. It wasn't the kind of laugh that came with
something humorous, but the kind of laugh given to chase off
disappointment.

"How is Harry?"

"He broke a finger, sprained his wrist, twisted his ankle, and lost a
fingernail. He's going to be black and blue for a week or two,"
Greg answered. The boy looked a lot worse than he really was.

"I'm glad the guy is in jail," Jack said.

"He's not in jail."

"Where the hell is he? Didn't they catch him?"

Shaking his head, Greg said, "He's in the hospital here. All that I
know for sure is that Harry poked out his eye and damaged his
windpipe. They had to perform a tracheotomy before bringing the
guy here. They don't even know the full extent of the damage he
did."

"Harry must have been really pissed to do that much damage,"
Jack said. Harry didn't seem big enough to do that to someone.

"The way I figure it, he's been angry about how I treated him for
the past couple of years. I imagine he was on the verge of losing it
when we finally woke to how we had been treating the kids.
Today, he took out his anger on that guy," Greg said. He felt lucky
that he hadn't been the recipient of all that anger. There were the
occasional news stories where a teenager lost it and killed his
family. Greg wondered how close they had come to being on the
news.

Talking about anger having accumulated for years caused Jack to
recall the conversation the previous weekend with Lisa. He asked,
"How are things with your daughter?"

"Okay. We talk, but we aren't really any closer. I don't understand
why," Greg said. His wife and daughter were a lot closer, but there
was still this gulf between her and him. Nothing he did seemed to
close that gulf.

"A rather wise man told me that you've got to tell women the
words," Jack said scratching the back of his neck. Since the day he
had told Lisa that he loved her, his life had been better than it ever
had been. He said, "My world changed the day I did that."

"What words?"

"That you love them."

Snorting, Greg said, "She should know that."

"She should, but I guarantee you that she doesn't. You have to tell
women the words," Jack said.

June came over and said, "They're releasing Harry now. He'll be
out in a minute."

Greg said, "I better get over there."

Turning to June, Jack said, "Greg invited us to go to dinner with
them at a local restaurant. I accepted. I hope that's all right with
you."

"You expect me to pass up a chance to avoid cooking?"

"No," Jack said with a laugh.

Moving like an old man, Harry came out of the emergency room
bracketed between Sharon and Lisa. Both women were making a
huge fuss over him. He looked pretty bad with his purple eye
puffing up. He was trying not to put all his weight on his ankle by
leaning on his mother. He was trying not to put all of his weight on
his mother by putting some on his ankle.

Greg and Cathy followed behind the three of them. Cathy was
pretty shaken up over seeing her brother in the hospital. She
couldn't believe what he had done. If she hadn't heard some of the
other accounts of his actions, she would have denied that it was
possible.

Jack noticed that there remained a distance between Greg and
Cathy. When he caught Greg's attention, he mouthed, "Say the
words."

When they reached the cars, Greg looked over at Jack and
considered his advice. He turned to Cathy and said, "Cathy, why
don't you ride with me over to the restaurant? I think your mother
and Lisa would like to ride with Harry."

"Okay," she answered wishing she could ride with Harry. She gave
a weak smile in the direction of her mother before she said, "Take
good care of him."

"I will," Sharon answered.

Winking at Lisa, she said, "I'm sure that you won't let him feel
any pain."

Running a hand over his back, Lisa smiled and said, "I have an
idea or two on how to keep his mind off his aches and pains. I'll
just kiss all of his boo-boos away."

The entire group broke up in laughter. Harry pointed to his lips and
said, "I've got a boo-boo here."

Still chuckling over the obvious begging for kisses by Harry, Greg
headed off to the car with Cathy. They got into the car and he sat
there for a minute staring at the key in his hand. She looked at him
confused. Turning to face her, he said, "You know I love you kids
more than life itself. It kills me to see one of you hurt."

Eyes tearing up, Cathy said, "You love us more than life itself?"

"I love you more than life itself," Greg said. He was not prepared
when Cathy launched herself across the seat of the car and hugged
him.
