                         Ground Zero
                                      By Marshell Conners

                                           Chapter Two

The documents that Westen left when she went on her way were
still lying on the living room coffee table when it was only
about an hour before we were supposed to get collected by a car
and taken to a plane, then taken to Ground Zero. With nothing
else to do, I picked it up. What can I say? My curiosity was
pretty much peaked and I had completely forgotten about the file
until that moment. However, the file was pretty much what Westen
said that it would be the basics.

I did learn a couple of things that were interesting, though.
They had a damn grading system. It started at Psion-1 and stopped
at Psion-100. If you wanted to be rated above 100 you had to go
through with a friendly competition with other members of Ground
Zero. After that, you would be 1 rating above the person that you
beat in the competition. Going by what the paper in my hand said,
I was already a Psion-25 just because of the shield I built one
of perfect metal. They were going to be in for a shock when they
found that Jenni had an identical one to mine. It just took her
six more hours than me to build it.

I also did something else to my shield. I didn't like the fact
that I didn't know people were trying to get into my head, even
if they couldn't do it. Therefore, I took an hour and built a
thin layer of "skin" around the metal, so that it would be
sensitive to invaders. It took a while, but Jenni finally got
what I was talking about when I said "second skin" and she was
able to carefully make a layer too.

Another thing that I learned was about Followers. When a person
arrives at Ground Zero, they pick out two Followers to practice
their mind control skill on. The document claimed that the
Followers had a really harsh life and would actually be happier
if you "programmed" them to be that way. All around, it was
turning out to be a very interesting read for me. I skipped the
parts that told me how to read people on purpose. I figured I
could practice that with my new Followers.

"Finally got around to reading that, huh?"

My sister's voice startled me out of my reverie. Of course, she
read it. She reads everything she can get her hands on. "Yeah,
you think there's going to be some jealous people there that
won't like the fact that two newbies are Psion-25s?" I asked with
a smirk.

"Fuck'em if they don't like it." Typical "Jenni" response.

We had already said goodbye to our mother and she was off to
work. Heather was at school, after throwing a fit that we got to
skip for three months. I swear that girl gets to be more of a
pain in the ass every fucking year. I was just glad that Jenni
and I were going to get a break from all the bitching and nagging
that she was sure to do while we were gone. Neither of us knew
how Mom put up with it. We both had a theory that the woman must
have done something horrible in another life, or she was a
saint.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. Both of us looked up at
the wall clock. It was exactly seven o'clock. Checking the gun at
the base of my back, I looked at Jenni to see if she did the same
and she did. I went to the door and opened it up to find a man in
his early thirties standing there. He was in excellent shape,
though. I could tell that, even through the loose black clothes
he wore. He was also wearing a pair of ray bans and a smirk. He
looked like a man who didn't really give a fuck what you thought
of him. I liked him almost immediately.

"Hey, kids. My name is Eric Strayer. It's my job to get you to
the Ground Zero Plane and get you to the Zero Compound."

"Are you the same Eric Westen was talking about?"

"I guess I am, since I am the only Eric at GZ. Well, c'mon. Let's
get movin'. I want to get on that plane and have a nice drink,"
he proclaimed with a laugh.

The only thing that Jenni and I were taking was one suitcase and
a huge duffel bag apiece. In the duffel bags were spare guns and
clips, all Adamantium, including the bullets. I had made a call
to Mario last night before I got any sleep. Now she was
tricked-out with the same gear as I was. I just hoped that she
and I could handle the kick of the modified 9mms.

If I was expecting a regular car, I was very wrong. They had sent
a damn limo. Eric smirked a little at our expressions. "Get use
to it, Kids. GZ has plenty of money."

I do not know what Jenni and Eric were thinking about, but I knew
what I was thinking about at that moment. With Jenni's
permission, I called Mario, had him open an account, and split
everything that I had with Jenni, including less than legal
investments. He argued with me until I told him that she was
going to be my protg and that she already had half the skills she
needed. It was true, too. She was as good as I was at Martial
Arts and sharp shooting. The only thing that she hadn't done yet
was killing someone.

Have you ever been so caught up in your thoughts that you miss
major things? I missed the whole fucking plane ride! When I came
back around, we were in a different car, and probably a different
state. I looked out the window and every thing was a lush green
as we passed it. I couldn't believe I let my attention slip that
far out of bounds. I had just hoped that Jenni could tell me what
happened later. I knew she paid attention; she paid attention to
everything.

It was about an hour of riding down a winding road that the limo
came to a stop in front of a huge gate. I watched as Eric's eyes
lost focus for a few moments and then the gates opened slowly. I
figured that he must have been talking to someone in the
compound. When we rolled through the gates, I noticed that there
were many large buildings that were about four stories high and
made a mental note to ask about them later. This was just getting
more interesting by the minute.

It was about this time that we reached the end of the road. We
stopped in front of a huge mansion that made every other mansion
that I have seen look small. This one had to have had hundreds of
rooms. I wondered why in the hell they would need something this
damn big. I felt like the Wolverine in the beginning of that
X-Men movie. I, too, wondered what the hell this was.

It was at this point, when we were walking toward the mansion
with our gear that Eric started to speak up. His intense brown
eyes looking us over. "It would be normally at this point that I
would tell you what and where you would be focusing on in your
training. However, Westen just sort of dropped you in our lap
with no file. Luckily, we have four others that have come early,
just as you have. We can sort of have a sit down and chat about
what to do. I will probably have to scan each of you, to know
what you can specialize in here."

Jenni looked at me as if I was about to object to being scanned,
but I just shrugged. I was pretty sure that they would find out
sooner or later anyway. After what seemed like forever, we
finally reached our room. Westen must have said something because
we were sharing one. After we stowed our gear, we walked back out
and followed Eric to wherever he was leading us.

After a few minutes, we walked into what looked like a game room
with couches. On the couches was three teenage girls and one boy
teenager. There was also a man that looked to be in his early
forties. Jenni and I walked over to a free couch and sat down,
looking around. It really was an awesome game room almost any
teenager would love it. It was just too bad that neither Jenni
nor I liked games unless it involved gambling. We mostly liked
pool, poker and blackjack.

The man in his early forties that was wearing a newly pressed
suit stood up after we sat down. "Alright people. The reason that
all of you are here early is because our field agents have
reported that you have great potential. You would not be here if
they did not think that you would not be suited for one of the
branches of Ground Zero."

"There are four main branches of Ground Zero that you may be
training for. The first is Telekinesis. The second is Empathy.
The third is Telepathy, which some say is the hardest. The fourth
is not really one skill; it is more of the bottom line. We call
this group the Black Dragon Society. You will not know what they
do unless you are accepted. However, I can tell you that you will
have to be good in certain fields right now to be accepted."

"Now, since there are six of you, Eric and I have decided to take
three apiece to train. So, Amy Chan, would you please go sit with
Mr. and Ms. O'Shea? Now the rest of you come with me so that Eric
can talk with his new charges."

All I could think through that whole speech was that he sure was
a long-winded bloke that kind of reminded me of a man with a pole
stuck so far up his ass it made his spine straighter. That and
the damn guy didn't give us his name. I was broke out of my
thoughts when a very pretty girl of Asian decent sat down beside
us. She was dressed in faded blue jeans and a black halter-top.
Oddly, she had the same color eyes as we did. I knew she must
have potential or she wouldn't be here so I figured that she was
much more than a random pretty face.

"Don't worry too much about the guy who was speaking, he just
likes things done a certain way, even if he isn't in charge," he
muttered the last part. "So let's get down to business. Since
Michael didn't tell you the first names of your new team mates, I
will. That is David and Jenni.

"Nice to meet you," she replied with a pleasant voice.

We just nodded back to her. We were not the types to trust
quickly.

"Ok, now that we have that out of the way. Let's get down to the
fun stuff. First off, what have the three of you done with your
mind? This might help us tell which direction you are going in."

Jenni spoke up first. "I've floated pencils and built a mental
shield last night with my brother's help." She said this with a
shrug.

This made Eric look intrigued. "That would mean that you have
both Telekinetic and Telepathic abilities, because only Telepaths
can build mental shields. If you don't mind me asking, what type
of materiel was the shield made out of?"

"Adamantium."

I took a little pride at seeing the shocked look on Eric's face
at that moment. After all, I was the one that taught her how to
build it. There was a knack to it and even if she took a lot
longer to finish hers than mine, she was still able to do it.
Just like the turtle beating the hare, to use a metaphor.

Eric just shook his head a little and turned to me. "I guess that
you have the same type of shield? Any other abilities we should
be aware of?"

"If you're talking mental abilities, then yes I have the same
type of shield. The only problem with that shield though is that
you do not know when people are trying to invade your thoughts
because you can't really "feel" anything. So last night I
developed what I call a "second skin" around my shield. It is as
sensitive as skin and will let me know immediately if someone is
tapping on my defenses. As for my other ability, Westen said that
I would be a powerful telepath because the voices of those around
me damn near drove me insane. There were so many, I couldn't
understand them."

Eric looked little shocked at what I said as well, but he rallied
well. "What about normal abilities. Do you have any skills I
should know about?"

"I know six different languages, I have third degree black belt
in Aikido just as my sister have a second black belt and I'm a
fairly accomplished hacker. Other than that, after Westen did a
full, in-depth scan on me, she said that I would be perfect for
the Black Dragon Society."

I swear the poor man paled a little when I said that. "Would you
mind if I did a scan on you first? I would like to see what
Westen did."

"On two conditions. You may see other people's secrets and I want
you to keep them to yourself. The second is to keep an open mind
and really look at the people I targeted."

Amy gave me a sharp, shrewd glance when I said the last sentence
as if she were weighing my worth. Apparently she liked what she
saw because she looked away with a smirk. I had this funny
feeling that that girl and me were going to get along fine.

It was at that moment I felt a brush against my shields. I looked
at Eric and he arched his eyebrow as if in question. With a nod I
lowered my shields. I could tell right away that Eric was better
than Westen at what he did. He started at the age of six and went
over everything. However, it went at such a speed that I could
hardly keep up.

Finally he finished. I looked at him to see what he thought. What
I found was the man staring at me intensely with a calculating
look behind his eyes. Finally he spoke. "I'll tell you this much,
Westen was right on the money. I would say that even after a
couple of days training that you would be up to a level fifty,
along with your sister. We've never had Psionics that had eidetic
memories before. Right now, I would place both you and your
sister at Psion-30, and that's saying something since neither of
you has any mental training yet. However, you re sure to get it.

"Well, it is your turn Amy. What abilities do you have?"

When she spoke, it was in a soft and melodic tone of voice. "I've
made a shield out of titanium and have floated various objects
and have read a few people's surface thoughts." None of this was
said in a bragging voice. I liked her more and more.

"How about physical training. Do you have any?

"I was trained by the Green Dragon in China since I was four."

It just wasn't Eric's day he paled again. Though to be fair, I
think I paled a little too. Jenni just looked confused. I would
have to explain it to her later. The Green Dragon was a legendary
society in China that prided itself on having the best assassins
in the world. In their customs, once an initiate becomes twelve
they become active and start taking contracts. Since the girl
sitting beside me was about sixteen, she has been an assassin for
four years.

After this admission was made, Eric scanned both Amy and Jenni to
see if they left anything out. Jenni was about to bulk at being
scanned but I gave her a look and she finally caved. All in all,
I would have to say that Eric was pretty impressed by what he had
to work with in us.

In every life a little work must fall. Since Eric had scanned us
and knew that both Jenni and I both had eidetic memories and
speed reading capabilities, he gave use ten books apiece to study
for the rest of the day, before we picked out our Followers.
Jenni had already decided that she was going to get female
followers since she went both ways. Her excuse was that she could
usually pick up any male she wanted the old fashioned way
anyway.

I started with telepathy for my studying. Like usual, it took me
about ten minutes to get through one novel length instructional
manual. There were four manuals all together. They were
Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced and Master Level. I read them
all in under an hour. I decided to stop there because while Jenni
could read fast, she couldn't read on the level that I could.
Yeah, yeah, I'm turning into mush ball.

But I felt kind of bad as I looked across our room and she was
still working on the Beginners book. Without disturbing her, I
silently stood up and walked out the door, not making a sound. I
figured I would let her study while I walked around sight seeing.
It was better than her feeling bad that she couldn't speed-read
as fast as I could.

As I walked, I was brought back to a thought that I had while I
was reading The Masters version of the manuals. It reminded me a
hell of a lot of a book I read when I was 11. It was called Dream
Masters. It was supposed to be a guide that would eventually lead
you to where you could control anything inside of your dream.

Telepathy was a lot like that on a higher level. Only you used a
mental extension and slipped inside your targets head, look
around, rip out what you don't like and then replace it with
things that you do like. It would make whomever you done it to;
into whatever you wanted them to be.

From what I had read in the books, there were three stages of
mind control. The first was "Suggestion". This is something that
the target would have done anyway if their morals were not in the
way. Say a woman found you attractive and would sleep with you if
she was single, but she was currently married and unwilling to
cheat on her husband. Take away the moral that says she has to
stay faithful and the affair would happen.

The second form is more forceful. It's called "Command". The
basis of it is that even if they are not interested in doing what
you want them to, you can Command them to, and enjoy it while
their doing it. However, doing it this way will cause you to have
to do a memory wipe afterwards, or command them never to tell
anyone.

The third form is the most difficult. It basically called
"Rewrite". What that basically means is that you go in and wipe
out entire blocks of memory and build entire new ones. Of course,
it is a hell of a lot more difficult than it sounds. It can take
hours and hours to completely rewrite a human mind to the
specifications that you want it. It also means that you have to
be at least a Psion-90 to complete it.

I was so lost in my thoughts while I was walking around that I
almost jumped out of my skin when a voice sounded behind me.

"I thought that you were suppose to be studying, David." Eric
asked in a kind voice. He didn't look mad, more just curious.

I turned and looked closely at him and considered coming up with
a lie, but then decided against it. "Actually, I just finished
all my Telepathy books. With an eidetic memory, I'll never forget
them. The problem is, even though Jenni has an eidetic memory,
she can't read as fast as I can. So, I decided to wait for her to
catch up so that we would know about the same amount of stuff
like that."

"Must be nice to have someone that close to you, kid." Then he
paused and looked at me for a moment. "Hey, I'll tell you what,
we just got in a fresh bunch of followers for you guys to choose
from about a half hour ago. How about I let you take the first
crack at them? It would give you a chance to practice what was in
those books," he told me with a smirk.

Now this was a prospect I hadn't thought of. It would irritate
Jenni a little, but it would also light a fire under her ass to
work faster. "Sure thing, Eric. Lead the way," I told him with a
smirk of my own.

Well, after a long ass walk outside, I figured out what one of
the big buildings was for followers. When we walked into the
first building we came to I realized that Eric must have sent a
telepathic message, because there were twenty-six followers lined
up in a huge plush blue room, with four guards to watch over
them.

There were blondes, brunettes and redheads everywhere. All of
them were beautiful. I was like a proverbial kid in a candy
store. They all ranged from what looked to be thirteen to
twenty-five. They were all holding what must have been their
files in their hands. The only thing I didn't like was how they
sort of stared blank eyed into space. It must have been part of
the control of who ever caught them laid down.

"Hey, Eric, how many am I allowed to take?"

"I think that you already know you are allowed to take two since
you read the books," he replied as I ogled all the teenage flesh
like I was a... well, a teenager. "Plus a third one to rewrite."

There were two that immediately caught my eye. They were
identical twins. I walked over to them and slowly took the files
out of their hands and began to read them. They were both from
the streets. They were both clean of STDs and any other type of
diseases. They were also a bit younger than I had thought. They
were both twelve years old.

That was a tad young for me, but not enough to dissuade me.

They were both so identical that I could not tell them apart.
They both had shoulder length blonde hair and the cutest freckles
that you have ever seen. They were also developing early in the
chest department, since them both looked like a size "B" to me.

I looked over their files some more and could hardly believe how
through Ground Zero had been. It stated in the file that they
both ran away from home because both of their parents were
abusive. I was very happy to see that Ground Zero had dealt with
the parents in the most final way there was. I hoped they burned
in hell; I hated child abusers.

"Hey, Eric, I'm going to choose these two for sure. Do you think
that I could go into their heads and add and change one or two
things in my room?"

"Sure, Kid. Just hand over the files and I'll sign my name. This
will make them yours free and clear. Out of curiosity, what are
you going to add and change? Their names are Terri and Kerri by
the way."

"Well, I was planning on taking away their mistrust for me and
adding that they see me as a protector, friend and if they can
seduce me lover. That was about the only changes I want to make
with them. But I do want to do a full, in-depth scan on them," I
told him in calm voice.

"That sounds Jake to me. Now you are going to have to pick out a
third. This one I want you to pick out on solely looks because
you will be doing a complete rewrite on her when test time roles
around. And believe me, rewrites are a lot harder than they sound
in books."

This time I looked a lot closer around the room for about thirty
minutes. Finally my eyes fell on a girl that looked to be about
seventeen and had long raven hair, along with deep blue eyes. I
knew for fact that she was the one I wanted. Her name was Shari.

"I'll take her," I told Eric, pointing out the girl.

"Good choice," he commented, looking at me closely again. "Out of
curiosity, how soon do you think that you could pass the Telepath
Exam?"

"Truthfully?"

Eric just nodded.

"I could probably do it today. It would be hard work, though."

Eric nodded thoughtfully. "I want you to command the twins to go
to your room and stay there. I'll contact Michael and have him as
my second to over watch you take the rewrite test on this raven
beauty. If you can pass this test, there will be nothing else
that we can teach you in telepathy."

"How do you score the test?"

"Speed, thoroughness and how permanent the rewrite is."

I just nodded. It sounded fair enough to me. I looked at the
twins and decided to send my first silent command. <My name is
David. Go to my room and wait for me. If there is someone there,
tell them David sent you. >

Eric nodded approvingly. Then he motioned his head toward the
raven-haired beauty. So I sent her a command to follow us. She
did so without a word, still carrying her file.

Eric's office was huge. It had two couches and recliner for
crying out loud. I must have had an amazed look in my eyes when
we entered because he chuckled a little. "A little pretentious,
huh? GZ likes to have their members live in style, whatever that
means."

It was at that moment that I noticed that stuck up guy Michael
sitting on one of the couches looking at us with unveiled
annoyance. I wondered if I pulled my gun and shot him if I would
get in trouble. In the end, I decided against it... for the time
being any way. I couldn't help it; there was just something about
the guy that rubbed me the wrong way.

Michael Finally spoke up. "What's so important, Eric? I'm in the
middle of giving my charges a lesson in telepathy. Did you know
that young John is already capable of the moderate level?"

I guess Eric decided to choose no to answer the last question. I
don't blame him; I hate braggarts too. "I'll tell you what is
important. I need a second for a test. Young Mr. O'Shea here is
ready to take the rewrite test and this beautiful woman behind
him is his subject."

I swear that poor Michael did the best fish out of water
impersonation that I have ever seen. He sputtered for a while but
finally nodded. Eric pulled a stopwatch out of his pocket and
tossed it to him. He then looked at me.

"The quickest complete successful rewrite was thirty three
minutes. Not that it matters, I just thought you would like to
know," he told me with a wink.

"Whenever, you are ready, Mr. O'Shea."

With that I mentally cast myself into her mind. The first thing I
noticed was that she was an awful lot like my other sister
Heather. That is to say that she is a stone cold bitch that
thought the world revolved around her. Well, that wouldn't last
for long.

It was then that I started removing memories at an astonishing
rate. There weren't many memories in her head that I liked so I
took most of them out. The hard part was replacing them with
memories that centered on me. Then I started replacing them with
the one's I wanted. I decided that I should replace the memories
with something original. The first thing I did was made it so
that she would protect me at all costs, unless it was against
friends.

The second thing I did was make it so that she saw me completely
as her friend and protector. The next thing I did was make it so
that she would do anything to please me. The next thing I did was
make it so she had a driving goal to learn about Martial Arts and
Guns so that she may protect her family better. The last thing I
did was make it so she loved everyone in my family.

I had no idea how long that it took me to do what I did. All I
knew was that I was covered in sweat when I was finished. I also
knew that Eric handed me cold Mt. Dew when I was finished. I
looked up at the clock and saw that twenty minutes had passed and
I was proud of myself. I had beaten the record of Ground Zero.
And judging by the grin on Eric's face, he was really proud too.

Michael just looked annoyed. "There is no way in hell that you
could have finished that quick. I'm afraid that I will have to
look myself. I warn you, if you did it incorrectly you will be
kicked out of Ground Zero!"

Eric looked like he was going to object strongly.

I silenced him with a look though.

Michael looked into the girl's eyes and I realized that I added
another rewrite in her; I made it so that she hated Michael. The
entire time that he looked into her eyes she gave him a glare
that would have melted steel. It took him thirty minutes to do a
complete check and he seemed to look even more annoyed.

Almost reluctantly he replied, "It's a perfect rewrite."

"Damn straight," Eric replied.

With that, Michael stormed out of the room in a huff.

Eric looked at me with an apologetic look on his face. "Don't
worry about Michael, he's just Jealous. He wished that he would
have picked you, but he didn't because he thinks you have an
attitude problem." He added the last with a smirk.

"That's because I do have an attitude problem," I added with a
smirk.

All of the sudden Eric took on a very serious face before he
started talking. "I'm going to tell you something that I have
never told another student before. So I want you to listen close.
Have a seat because this will be a shock."

I just nodded in acceptance. He took a seat on the sofa and was
mildly surprised when Shari took a seat on his lap and cuddled up
to him. He thought that it felt very nice so he let it slide.

Eric smirked at the scene. "To start off with the three of you
that are my students are way too advanced for me. So, what I am
going to do, even if I am reluctant, is pass you off to a master
Psionic that is one of the best. When he gets through with you,
you will be one of the best as well. I must warn you though, his
training is brutal. His name is Steven Brackett."

"I don't know what to say. Are you sure he'll make us the best."

"He'll make you and Jenni the best; I'll be keeping Amy Chan to
train myself. She is just about at the right level for me to
train. Hopefully I can train her to be one of the best."

"I hope this works out for the best,"

"I imagine that you will be working on telekinesis and other top
secret projects. Jenni will be working on Telepathy if she has
not caught up yet." Eric replied with a contemplative look on his
face.

Eric then continued. "It will be three days before you meet
Steven. That should give Jenni plenty of time to catch up.
Telekinesis is mostly trial and error so you both should be on
the same level when it comes to that."

"Can you tell me a little about Steven Brackett?"

"Hmm, Steven Brackett. He is most likely the most famous Psionic
in the world that doesn't hold a position of power. He is a
member of the Black Dragon Society and he has a record of 317
kills. He has taken being a Psionic to a whole new level. Rumor
has it that he has skills that no one has heard of. He is most
certainly dangerous."

"It sounds like I could learn a lot from him."

"Oh, you most certainly can. Just be careful."

"Well, I guess I should get back to Jenni to see how she is
doing."

"You do that. And don't forget to program Terri and Kerri."

************************

I walked into the house that Jenni was in and saw that she was on
her last book of telepathy. I made Shari be quite as I
approached. It made me proud that she was so studious. She was so
involved she didn't even hear me walk in. I decided to play a
joke on her since she wasn't paying attention. I snuck up behind
her as quite as a mouse and stood right behind her.

"HIYA!" I screamed in her ear.

I swear she jumped three feet in the air and let out an ear
piecing shriek. She looked at me with her hand over her heart and
murder in her eyes. "You do know that paybacks are a bitch, don't
ya?" she said in a menacing voice.

"I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist... Especially since you have
seemed to finish the last book on Telepathy. You should be able
to pass the test like I did this morning." I said with a smug
look.

"You already passed your test?!" she asked shocked.

"Well, I still have to modify Kerri and Terri."

"So that's their names."

I looked over at them and they were sitting vacantly on the bed
not saying a word. I figured there was no time like the present
to get this over with; I just didn't know what I wanted to do
yet. There were a million things running through my mind, but I
wanted it to be perfect. They were twelve years old and I wanted
them to act like it, with a few major differences.

With that thought in mind he sat down and he decided to try
something new. He would try to program two subjects at once. He
tried staring into both of their eyes at once and immediately
found that it worked, with that he got to work. He just hoped it
worked like he wanted it to.

The main thing that he programmed them with was that they would
be his best friends. He would also make them attracted to him.
Other than that he made it so they were extremely protective over
him. That was about all he wanted to do to them. He liked their
personalities.
