Chapter Twenty-eight - Dave Rides the Range

Rachael, Keisha, and Mia were back in the pack.  Dave and Darcy drank beers for 
two hours before going to a bar in town known for accepting fake identifications 
without much question.  A lot of Wake Forest students went there and the two

He followed Coach Dawes into his office and closed the door before he sat down.  
He apologized, "I'm sorry for not giving one hundred percent, Coach.  I've been 
distracted by some personal difficulties - but that will change from here 
forward."

Coach Dawes nodded.  "I've noticed you've been slacking off and I heard you were 
drinking too much - I was ready to call you on it.  I'm pleased you see the 
problem.  Please get yourself straightened out and get your focus back on your 
game.  I got your marks from midterms and you better get that straightened out 
as well.  I would offer you a tutor but I know from your marks last year that 
you don't need help - you just need to study harder.  Drinking and partying are 
not going to fix any problems you have to deal with.  Spend your energies 
working on the things that really matter."

Dave nodded and thanked his coach for the good advice before he left.  When he 
got back to his room, Alec and Shauna were sitting in the main room and Dave sat 
with them.  He looked at Alec then said, "I'm really sorry for being such an 
asshole this last month.  I've been struggling to deal with losing Jana and Kyra 
- they were my stability and I really miss them.  The excessive drinking stops 
as of today and I won't be dragging girls back to my room the way I have been.  
Can you two forgive me for being such a jerk?"

Alec put out his hand and Dave shook it.  Then Alec explained, in his best 
caddie voice, "I know you really miss the twins but you can't piss your whole 
education or golf career away because of your sagging love life.  On the golf 
course you are the most focused person I have ever met.  You don't let bad golf 
shots bother you - you concentrate on the current shot and chose the best path

dive in so deep that when any little thing goes wrong, you immediately panic and 
blow your top.  Your first response is to get angry.  You should try to think

will get in trouble but getting angry and losing focus won't help you see the 
best path to the problem.  Stay calm and focused on the current situation."

Dave listened to his best friend intently.  He thought about what Alec said and 
simply nodded.  He then thanked Shauna as well and went to his room.  He got out 
his books and started studying.  He had a lot of catching up to do so he went at 
his books hard all day.  When he showed up for group practice the next day he 
apologized to everyone for being a slacker and promised to get back on track.  
Group and team practice went well and after a good lunch, Dave went right back 
at his studies.

He studied hard all weekend and was getting a handle on what he had to do for 
most of his courses but he was way behind in the course he shared with Jana and 
Kyra and he couldn't seem to understand the material they were covering - he had 
missed a number of classes and didn't get the notes from anyone.  He finally 
called Kyra on Sunday evening and asked if he could come see her.  She agreed so 
he walked to the twins' dorm.  When he knocked on the door Jana answered and she

She was surprised by his polite gesture and replied, "I'll get Kyra."

one was in the room and Kyra guided him to the couch.  As soon as they sat down 
Dave continued, "I'm failing Religious Studies and I was hoping you would help 
me get caught up.  We can study here in this room so Jana will know nothing else

Kyra followed him to her room then she opened the door and checked to see if 
Jana was decent before she guided Dave into the room.  Jana turned from her desk

He ran all the way to his room and got his books.  Soon, he was back in the

The next week and a half passed quickly as Dave concentrated on his studies and

Dave qualified for the Isleworth tournament along with Darcy, Carl, Keith, and 
Devin.  Will and Alec were both disappointed to be left out and knew they would 
have to work hard to get back onto the starting team.

The tournament was similar to the previous year with several professional 
golfers around - but there was no sign of Tiger Woods.  Dave was pleased he 
didn't show up because Dave was not completely back on his game even though he 
won the tournament by one stroke over a Texas golfer.  Wake Forest won the team 
title and Coach Dawes was again happy to be back on top.

Dave studied hard each evening he was in Florida and when he returned to class 
on Wednesday he continued to work hard to get caught up.  He was surprised on 
Thursday when Jana pointed at the empty seat beside Kyra and invited Dave to sit 
with them.  Dave talked casually with Kyra and he was really happy to be back on 
better terms with Jana.  They didn't talk much but at least the nasty looks had 
ended.

Dave studied hard all weekend and by Sunday he had actually started to cover 
material he would have the next day.  He was finally caught up on all seven 
courses and he was very proud of himself.  He decided to take a break around 
eight o'clock and went to a coffee shop on campus.  He was sitting their sipping 
hot chocolate when a well-dressed gorgeous blond smiled at him from across the 
room.  He automatically nodded to her and said hello.  She said hello back then 
asked if she could join him.  He pulled out the chair beside his and she walked 
over with her coffee in hand.  She introduced herself, "Hi, I'm Anne Jordan."

Dave put out his hand, "I'm Dave MacDonald."  He thought about how her first 
name was the same as his first lover Ann Kopsas.  But where Ann was had a dark 
complexion with small breasts, this Anne was fair-skinned with round average-
sized breasts.  Ann was very athletic looking while this Anne had a rounder 
curvier shape.  Dave noticed Anne had a wry smile that lit up her face as she 
spoke; he somehow found that to be very attractive.

She asked, "Don't you play on the golf team?"  He nodded so she continued, "I 
thought I recognized you.  Congratulations on winning the tournament last week.  
I've never played golf but I always wanted to try."

Dave smiled at the eagerness in her voice and suggested, "I'd be happy to give 
you a few golf lessons."

She thanked him and quickly accepted his offer; instead of leaving it at that, 
she then began to outline her schedule and availability.  They arranged to meet 
at the golf center the next evening at seven o'clock.  Dave asked her where she 
was from and she explained that she grew up on a ranch in New Mexico but her 
father wanted her to be a doctor so she came east to Wake Forest.  Dave enjoyed 
the hour they spent together and he walked her back to her dorm before he 
returned to his apartment.  He studied in his bed for another hour before he 
fell asleep.

Dave looked forward all day Monday to his time with Anne and, when they finally 
met at the golf center, he was actually a little nervous.  She warned him she 
wasn't any good at golf but he assured her they would just have some fun.  They 
spent over an hour hitting balls and Dave really liked her.  She was average 
height at about five foot five and her round ass looked great when she was 
swinging a golf club.  He noticed her nipples pushing out her blouse and he felt 
a little stir in his shorts.  He asked her to go on a date with him on Wednesday 
and was relieved when she agreed to go to a movie with him.

Wednesday night went wonderfully and Dave knew he was quickly falling for Anne 
but he remembered what Alec had told him about diving in too quickly so he 
tempered his feelings slightly.  When he took Anne back to her room he kissed 
her goodnight.  It was a brief but passionate kiss and he felt warm inside as he 
walked back to his apartment.

The team left early Thursday for the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, 
Georgia.  They had played the team qualifying round the previous Saturday and 
Dave, Will, Keith, Darcy, and Devin were selected as the team.  Although he was 
not successful, Alec's play was still improving and Coach Dawes promised him 
another start in the spring if he continued to improve.

Dave had a good tournament but a local golfer got hot and beat him by two 
strokes for the individual title.  Darcy had a great tournament and finished 
third - one stroke behind Dave.  Wake Forest won their second straight team 
title and Coach Dawes was ecstatic.

The practice group met for one more week until the women's team finished their 
fall schedule.  Dave was still practicing hard but his focus and dedication 
still wasn't as strong as it had been the previous spring.  The women finished 
second in their final tournament and their national ranking had moved up to 
fourth.  The men were ranked number one after their last two victories.

November passed quickly and Dave spent most of his time either studying or with 
Anne.  He really liked her and they slowly became very intimate.  Since Dave was 
slowing himself down, it was Anne who took the initiative to put his hand on her 
breast and encourage him to get more personal.  Dave was pleased and surprised 
she made the move - but mostly pleased; she had nice firm breasts.  She was 
going home for Thanksgiving and they finally made love the night before she

He had considered staying with Alec because he really didn't want to go home to 
QAI.  He thought he was finally getting over Jennifer and going home could 
simply bring back the painful memories of her.

Dave had a relaxing long weekend with Patsy and Alec.  Patsy kept telling him he 
should stop studying so hard and enjoy a few days off.  It was good to hear 
someone telling him to slack off; he smiled at her and explained that he needed 
to start getting ready for final exams.  He was determined to recover from his 
early bad grades.

Classes on Monday went well and Dave was looking forward to seeing Anne.  They 
met for lunch and agreed to go to a movie that night.  After the movie that 
night Anne returned to Dave's apartment with him and they made love again.  She 
asked him if he wanted to try some different positions and readily lowered 
herself on his pole when Dave suggested cowgirl.  He was really starting to fall 
for the beautiful blond; after they made love, they talked about their plans for 
the Christmas holidays.  Anne asked Dave if he wanted to go to New Mexico with 
her for Christmas and Dave thought that would be fun.  She promised to check 
with her father the next day.

As they lay in bed Dave confessed about his previous summer with Jennifer and 
how he was still recovering from that breakup.  She also confessed that she had 
been dating the star basketball player, the one who had been hurt in the bad car 
accident.  She explained how he had trouble dealing with his disability and how 
he chased her out of his life.  She cried as she talked about how much she had 
loved him - Dave felt bad for her.  They consoled each other and Dave thought 
they were the perfect match - two wounded veterans of the love wars.

He was studying in his room the next night when the phone rang.  Anne said her 
parents were looking forward to his visit.  Dave was pleased and they made 
arrangements to go out on Thursday evening.  He suggested they drive to Raleigh 
to watch a hockey game, the Mighty Ducks were in town and John had been called 
up from the minor leagues for a few games and hoped to play against the 
Hurricane.  Anne though it sounded like a fun evening.  Dave said they would 
leave right after his class on Thursday so they could see John before the game 
started.

When Dave hung up the phone he walked into Alec's room and explained, "I won't 
be coming to your place for Christmas.  Thank your mom but I've decided to go 
with Anne to New Mexico."

Alec looked at him strangely and replied, "You seem to be getting pretty serious 
with Anne.  Do you know much about her?"  Alec was very worried for his friend 
because he had heard that Anne was simply a gold-digger.  She had been dating 
the star basketball player mainly because he was destined to a big, well-paid 
NBA star, but when he had his accident and his career ended, she dropped him 
like a hot potato.  He desperately wanted to warn his friend about this but Dave 
had been doing much better the last six weeks and Alec didn't want to see his 
friend go into another tailspin.

Dave answered, "Yeah, we're getting along great.  I really like her and I'm 
happy to have someone very special in my life again.  She had it pretty rough 
when her old boyfriend dumped her.  But she is starting to open up to me and I'm 
starting to open up with her as well; I think it helps both of us to share."  
Alec looked at his friend skeptically but didn't say anything.

The last week of classes covered a lot of review work in preparations for finals 
and Dave was feeling better about all his classes.  On Thursday after his last 
class he met Anne at his apartment and they drove to Raleigh.  Dave went 
directly to the rink and the tickets John had left him were waiting at the main 
ticket office.  Dave picked up the tickets and led Anne directly into the rink.  
They passed the tickets to security then asked for directions to the visiting 
dressing room.  Dave and Anne found their way to visitor's dressing room after 
getting approval from security to go into the restricted area.  John was waiting 
for Dave and they hugged when they met.  Dave introduce John to Anne and John 
laughed, "Another Anne, eh?  You must like that name."

Dave laughed and glanced at Anne - he was pleased she was also chuckling.  He 
had told her about Ann Kopsas the previous week so she wasn't surprised to hear 
the reference.  Dave and John caught up on old times before John had to get 
ready for the game.  Dave asked about going out after the game but John said the 
team was to flying to Philadelphia right after the game.

Dave watched the game intently and explained the rules to Anne who had never 
watched hockey before.  John only saw limited play during the first period but 
he worked hard when he got on the ice and Dave was proud of his friend playing 
in the teal jersey of the Mighty Ducks.  The Ducks lost four-two but John played 
better each shift and by the end of the game was getting more and more ice time.  
It was actually the first professional regular season game he had played with 
the Ducks and Dave was pleased he could be there for it.  After the game Dave 
and Anne went down to see John but John only had a few minutes to speak.  Dave 
congratulated him on a good game and wished him luck.  John thanked him for 
watching and promised to call if and when he heard whether he would be staying 
on with the Ducks.

During the drive back to campus, Dave was extremely happy for his friend and 
Anne laughed at how giddy he was.  When they arrived back at his room Dave 
pulled her into his arms and kissed her passionately.  He eased her blouse off 
her shoulders and sucked her nipples through her bra - they hardened 
immediately.  He unhooked her bra and pulled it out of the way as he sucked her

town of Carlsbad, Dave was shaking in anticipation.  His worries weren't 
necessary as he immediately fell in love with Anne's parents.  Her dad was a big 
man over six feet tall; he had huge rugged hands that showed he worked hard on 
the ranch.  Her mother was a sweet lady who also looked to be a very hard 
worker.  The drive to the ranch took thirty minutes and Dave loved the beautiful 
flat countryside.  When they reached the house, Dave was surprised by the large 
ranch house and three barns.  He was introduced to Anne's four brothers and two 
sisters.  She had told Dave about them and he already knew all their names.  
Anne was the oldest and Joey was three years younger at seventeen.  Jimmy was 
sixteen; Amanda was fourteen; John was thirteen; Allie was eleven and Jason was 
the youngest at nine.

As Dave entered the house he admired the large spacious kitchen but was slightly 
puzzled when he noticed a bed in the corner.  He was eventually shown to his 
room and he immediately asked who he was putting out of their bed.  Anne 
explained that Jason and John would sleep on the bed in the kitchen.  Dave 
suggested he sleep there but Anne told him he would be woken up too early if he 
slept there.  Dave tried to argue but gave up quickly.  He was a little tired 
from the trip but young Jason wanted to show Dave his horse so Dave followed him 
to the large barn closest to the house.  Jason pointed at large white horse and 
said, "That's my horse.  John used to use him until he got a new stallion.  He's 
not as fast as the rest of the horses but Pa has promised me a new stallion when 
I turn twelve.  Do you ride horses, Dave?"

Dave thought about the two times he went horse back riding on QAI and simply 
chuckled.  He replied, "Not very well, Jason.  I've only done it a couple of 
times but I did like it."

Jason looked at him strangely, "You mean you don't have your own horse?"

Dave laughed out loud.  "No, I don't.  Do you have one I can use?"

Jason pointed to a sleek black-looking horse and said, "Pa said you can use that 
one if you're up to it.  He's a little feisty - but he's very fast."

Dave shook his head, "I'm not sure I'm ready for a feisty horse quite yet; we'll 
see."

Dave followed Jason back into the house just as dinner was being served.  Dave 
ate a large meal and was very pleased to see that Anne's father and brother Joey 
actually ate more than he had - that was a first for Dave.  After the plates 
were cleared from the table, Dave went into the pantry and tried to help with 
the dishes but was quickly chased from the room by Anne's mother, Allison.  Dave 
sat in the living room with her father and asked, "What time do you start work 
in the morning, Mr. Jordan?"

The burly man replied, "Please call me Joseph.  I usually check on the herd at 
first daylight but I spend at least an hour in the barns before that.  Are you a 
morning person, Dave?"

Dave nodded.  "Yes sir, I'm usually on the go before six o'clock.  It will 
probably take some time for me to get used to riding but I would love to help 
you in any way I can."

Joseph shook his head, "No need for you to help, son; I have the boys for that 
but you're welcome to join us if you like."  Dave nodded indicating he would 
like to join them.

Allison brought Joseph a coffee and Anne brought Dave a hot chocolate.  Jason 
asked if he could have some hot chocolate and Anne ended up making cups for her 
other brothers and sisters.

Anne, her sisters, and Allison joined the men in the main room and they talked 
about Dave's golf and what he wanted to do with his life.  They were all 
surprised he planned to play golf professionally and were astounded when they 
heard how much money he could make.  It was a good family gathering; Dave really 
liked Anne's parents and, when he went to his room, Anne spent some private time 
with him during which she quietly and thoroughly sucked him off before she went 
to her room.

Dave woke early the next morning and could smell bacon cooking.  He pulled on an 
old pair of jeans, a tee-shirt, and a sweatshirt.  When he entered the kitchen, 
all the J-men - Joseph, Joey, Jimmy, and John - were just being served their 
breakfast and Dave sat beside Joey.  The tall young man smiled at him just as 
Allison slid a large plate of hearty breakfast food in front of him.

After eating a good meal all the men-folk went to the barns and fed the 
chickens, pigs, and sheep.  Then they prepared the horses.  Joey found Dave some 
chaps while Joseph gave him a saddle and blanket.  Jimmy and John showed him how 
to put the bridle on the horse before they showed him how to put the saddle on.  
Joseph smiled at Dave and said, "Hopefully we'll see you out on the ranch 
sometime today.  Jimmy and John will help you."  The two men then rode off into 
the sunrise.

Dave tried to remember everything the boys were telling him but he doubted he 
would.  He mounted up and the stallion jumped a little, throwing Dave off 
balance.  Dave held on tight as he struggled to get his balance.  He thought he 
was finally ready as the other two boys mounted up but the stallion suddenly 
moved sideways unexpectedly and Dave tumbled onto the ground.  Jimmy and John 
laughed and were about to get off their horses to help him when Dave said, "Stay 
on your horses.  I'll figure this out."

Dave dusted himself off before he grabbed the saddle and climbed back on the 
horse.  He got his balance then nodded at Jimmy to lead the way.  Jimmy went in 
front and he started walking slowly.  Dave pulled the reins and directed his 
horse behind Jimmy.  John took up the rear and continually gave Dave pointers on 
how to sit and how to hold his feet and hands.  Dave was steadily feeling more 
comfortable and suggested Jimmy try running slowly.  Jimmy kicked his horse and 
it sprinted away from Dave.  Dave dug in his heels and his stallion immediately 
took off; Dave grabbed the saddle horn to hold on.  He thought he was going to 
fly off as he was repeatedly bounced into the air as the horse ran across the 
field.  Dave eventually remembered to hold his weight up off the horse by 
putting more weight on his feet and the ride became much smoother.

Dave was still struggling to keep his balance but he was adjusting fairly 
quickly.  He eventually felt comfortable enough to look past Jimmy but he 
couldn't see Joseph or Joey anywhere in sight.  He looked over the beautiful but 
barren country and he loved the quiet solitude immediately.  After riding for 
over twenty minutes they finally could see the adults and when they pulled up 
beside them, Joseph chuckled. "Well, son, you adapted a lot faster than most 
people do.  I'd say within a week you'll be ready to race any one of us."

Dave shook his head.  "No racing for me, thank you."  Dave looked over the heard 
which seemed to cover a huge area of the pasture.  He asked, "How many head do 
you have?"

Joseph replied, "With the three boys helping me now, I'm up to twelve hundred 
head.  It's a lot of work but it keeps the boys out of trouble.  This pasture is 
pretty well grazed over so we need to move them to a different pasture in a week 
or so.  We're just heading over to inspect the fences.  Follow me."  Joseph gave 
his horse a light jab with both feet and his large stallion sprinted off to the 
west, Joey, Jimmy, and John followed close behind.  Dave kicked his horse and 
off he went.  He was slowly falling behind and when they stopped twenty minutes 
later he was a quarter of a mile back.  Dave was, however, getting more 
comfortable on the horse and had actually gained a little distance the last five 
minutes.

Jimmy jumped off his horse and opened a gate.  Joseph, Joey, and John had just 
ridden through the gate when Dave caught up to them and he went through as well.  
Jimmy closed the gate then climbed back on his horse.  Joseph wanted Joey to 
check the fence along the west side and he sent Jimmy and John directly across 
the field to the far side.  Each would go in a different direction and would 
meet either Joey or their Pa.  As the two younger boys sprinted across the 
pasture, Joey started walking his horse along the fence to the west.  Joseph 
motioned for Dave to follow him as he started along the fence towards the east.

Dave noticed that several spans of the barbed wire were missing and Joseph 
pulled out a notepad and wrote down some notes.  Joseph got off his horse 
several times to check posts and made several more notes when the posts looked 
to be broken or rotten.  They eventually met up with Jimmy and he handed his 
notes to his father.  Joseph led them back to the gate and they waited for the 
Joey and John.  When they returned Joseph reviewed all the notes.  He looked at 
Dave, "Looks like we're going to be busy the next couple of days.  We'll have to 
run to town and get some more fencing supplies as well."

Jimmy opened the gate and after they had all passed through, they rode back to 
the house.  Dave wasn't sure if they rode slower or he went faster but he was 
able to keep up.  His balance on the horse was getting much better and he was 
beginning to feel more confident.  When he arrived back at the house he climbed 
off the horse and his thighs and ass immediately felt tender.  Anne walked out 
of the house and she laughed at Dave as he walked bowlegged around the corral.  
Joseph teased, "You're going to be sore tomorrow, boy."

Dave could feel his muscles contracting and he had to agree.  After the horses 
got a good drink of water, Jimmy showed Dave how to brush out his horse before 
he guided it back into its stall.  Dave really liked working with the horse and 
he was talking animatedly to his horse as he brushed him out.  Anne laughed at 
Dave and called him a real cowboy at heart.

After lunch, Dave drove to town with Joey and helped load the supplies on the 
truck.  Joey was surprised when someone at the general store recognized Dave and 
asked if he was the golfer who was dating Hilary Duff.  Dave simply replied that 
he and Hilary were friends but he was actually dating Anne Jordan.  On the 
return trip home, Joey asked about the Hilary Duff thing and Dave told him what 
happened at the British Open and how tabloid newspapers needed to make up 
stories to sell their publications.

Back at the ranch, Dave helped get the supplies loaded onto a trailer, which 
would be hauled to the fence site the next day.  Dave asked if they would use a 
tractor to haul the wagon and Joey laughed saying they hooked the trailer to a 
four-wheeler, which was much faster than a tractor or horses.  Joey said some 
ranches use four-wheelers for almost everything but his Pa preferred the 
traditional horses; he said you got a much better feel high on a quiet horse 
than low on a noisy machine.

Dave was tired when dinner was finally served and he was happy to relax in the 
main room with Joseph.  Joseph told Dave he was a hard worker and he was 
impressed with his ability to adjust quickly to the horse.  Dave thanked him.  
The women soon joined them and, after a brief rest, Dave and Anne went for a 
walk.  Dave thought the walk would help stretch out his aching muscles; it did, 
and their kissing also seemed therapeutic.  The last thing Dave remembered 
before falling into a deep sleep was the feel of Anne's soft lips as she coaxed 
out his seed in a goodnight suck.

When Dave woke the next morning he was very stiff but he pushed himself out of 
the bed and was soon eating breakfast with the men.  After feeding all the 
animals and saddling up the horses, Dave, Joey, Joseph, and John rode out to the 
new pasture.  Jimmy followed close behind on the four-wheeler.  Fixing the 
fences was hard, back-breaking work and Dave was exhausted by noon.  Joseph 
pulled out the lunch he had packed for all of them and they took a short break 
to eat.  They were soon back to work and got a significant portion of the work 
done in the first day.  Jimmy even had to drive back to the barn for supplies 
once.

When they arrived back at the house that evening, Dave was really tired but he 
felt good.  He and Anne went for another walk after eating a big meal.  Anne 
told Dave that her father really liked him.  Dave said he liked her father as 
well.

Over the next two weeks Dave worked hard on the ranch every day and he went to 
bed tired every night.  He found that riding the horse provided him a lot of 
time to think and he thought about Jennifer, Jana, and Kyra.  He thought about 
everything that had happened the previous summer and he thought about his future 
with Anne.  He could definitely see settling down with her and he was happy he 
got along so well with her family.  He thought a lot about Alec comparing his 
love life to his golf game and the more he thought about it the more he knew 
Alec was exactly right.  Dave had to sign his card on his old love life.  That 
round of his relationships was done and it was time to finalize the score and 
move on.

As Christmas drew near, Dave started to think more and more about home.  He 
missed his family and he questioned his logic to not go home just because of 
Jennifer; maybe it was time to stop avoiding things from the past.

He went Christmas shopping in town and bought something for all his new brothers 
and sisters.  Allie had grown very fond of him and he bought a special necklace 
for her.  He picked something special for each of the four boys and two girls.  
He bought a very special diamond necklace for Anne.  While he was in the jewelry 
shop he found a pendant for a necklace that said `Friends Forever' - he bought 
three of them and had them all specially gift wrapped.

Christmas Day was even harder as he thought more about his family; Anne's entire 
family could tell he was homesick.  The family opened their presents and Dave 
received a hug from both of Anne's sisters.  Anne gave him a passionate kiss 
after she opened the diamond necklace.  Dave received a beautiful silver belt 
buckle from her parents and several flannel shirts from her siblings.

Late in the morning on Christmas Day he saddle up his horse and went for a long 
ride, alone.  He thought more about his life and he came to some very important 
decisions.  He rode hard back to the house about mid afternoon and after 
brushing out his horse and stowing all his gear, he found Anne and explained, 
"I've decided to fly home tomorrow, assuming I can get a flight.  I have a lot 
of loose ends I need to tie up and I want to be ready when I return to Wake 
Forest.  This will be my last year golfing there competitively so I want it to 
be the very best possible and in order to do that I need to eliminate all the 
distractions I currently have."  She hesitantly agreed - she was afraid he was 
going to go back with Jennifer, and said so.  He assured her that was not the 
case.

Dave then booked his flights on his computer.  He had to use a dial-up service 
and it took a while but he eventually had everything booked.  He didn't call 
home because he wanted it to be a surprise.  He thanked Joseph and Allison for 
their hospitality before he explained his plan.  They were very supportive.  
After dinner, he slipped away with Anne and they made love in the loft of the 
barn.  The smell of straw and the soft moans of the woman writhing beneath him 
made a permanent memory in Dave's mind.

When Dave went to bed that night he was more relaxed and happy than he had been 
in a long time.  He felt confident he was ready to move on with the rest of his 
life.
