"Lysistrata"


Yes, he'd grown heavy, though not grotesquely so. But this?

"Honey? I have a proposition."

"Uh-huh?"

"About your weight."

"My weight."

"Well...if you started a diet?"

Silence.

"Every day you stayed on it you could, um, have me."

"Have you."

"Sexually. Whatever you want."

She smiled helpfully. He glowered back. 

"Every night. Anything I want."

"Uh-huh." 

"And if I stumble?"

"Um, I don't know. No sex? Until you...?"

"Fuck you!!" 

She startled. Oops. The big oops. The `what-was-I-thinking' oops. 

"Honey...?"

"How often do we sex? Once a week?"

"Maybe two..."

"Hah! Maybe sometimes! And what do we do?"

"What...?"

"Nothing! You see to that!"

 "That's not true! I just thought..."

"You just thought you'd control me with sex. Whoopee! Well how many
years have I controlled myself for you? Not pushed when you aren't in
'the mood'? Why not!?"

Something dreadful was unfolding.

"Honey...?"

"Because you don't want it! And you're my goddamn wife, my life
partner, not some fucking hooker! That's why it's only once a week! And
how long since we did anything but straight intercourse?"

"Honey...!"

"Shut up!! Do you really think I could be that selfish? Impose on you
night after night? You've always controlled the sex. I'm not the
selfish one here!"

"But ..."

"I said shut up!!" She shrank within herself. "So this is what we're
doing. I'm going to diet. And we're not fucking until I reach my target
weight! If ever! I'm sure you'll be very happy!"

He left. He was gone overnight. He wouldn't talk to her. When she tried
to apologize he turned away. For days she was afraid he might leave
her.

Three weeks later, she turned to him in bed.

"Honey? Can we celebrate how well your diet's working?"

He kissed her sweetly.

"I can wait."
