Dalvid rolled out of bed the next morning, a depressed man. He knew he would have
to report to his employer today. He didn't want to. He didn't even know if he
wanted to keep his job anymore.

He knew he should shave, but he really didn't want to. In the mood he was in,
he'd be more likely to cut himself. Telling himself he should look his best, he
forced himself to clean himself up.

He skipped breakfast, waving his concerned slaves away. He had slept for a long
time; the sun was already high in the sky by the time he left his house, and set
out for the Northridge Slave Trader headquarters.

He found Kalhune and Token waiting for him outside. They would go in together.
His supportive friends.

They entered the building, and he immediately saw Ragnor and Durip. Ragnor looked
leerily at him, but feigned happiness. "So nice to see you're still alive Dalvid."

"Thank you for your kind words," Dalvid answered.

"Was unfortunate that we didn't get any slaves, for all the effort we want to,"
Ragnor continued.

"Sad indeed. We'll make up for it in future." Dalvid replied.

"While we were waiting for you, I saw another party that had a fine crop of
slaves," Ragnor said, a thinly veiled challenge to Dalvid's abilities.

Dalvid didn't have the energy or compulsion to argue about it.

"Yeah I saw them too." Durip said. "They had one slave that looked familiar, she
looked like one of the slaves we had - what was her name? The brown haired one,
Lee-sar or something"

Dalvid perked up. "They had Li'sar with them? Which slave party was this?"

"Oh just some slave party we saw."

"Which slave party? Where were they headed?" asked enthusiastically.

"I don't know, it's no big deal, get a hold of yourself man." Durip answered.
"Ventruse I think. Yeah I think Ventruse."

"I-I have to go." Dalvid said, heading for the door.

"What? What about this meeting?" Kalhune asked, confused.

"Tell them I quit!" Dalvid said, as he ran out the door and down the street.

---

Li'sar looked up as Master Meldor entered the chamber. There was a man with
him, a man who didn't look like the Valuans: he had a thick black beared, and
deeply tanned skin.

Li'sar didn't like the look of him. He looked cruel, much crueller than any of
the Valuans she had met.

"On your feet, all of you, stand in position for inspection!" Meldor ordered.
The girls stood up, complying, the five of them standing in front of the men.
Meldor turned to the man with him, "Sir, these are some of my fine slaves.
Each one is twelve silver pieces."

The man looked them over. He smiled, a smile that Li'sar didn't like the look
of. "I will take all of them," he replied in a thick accent.

"Certainly," Meldor replied, "We will deliver them to you at the arranged
location, at the start of the first watch tonight."

The man nodded, and he and Meldor turned to leave.

Li'sar wondered why they were inspected in the sleeping chamber instead of in
the viewing chamber as before. She, nor the other girls knew it, but selling
slaves to foreigners was illegal, except to countries which have a trade
agreement with Valua. Valuans despise the way that many other cultures treat
slaves, and refuse to sell them to them.

Valuans deal (what they feel is) honorably with slaves, always assuring that
they are well-fed, sheltered, and not overworked, nor punished anywhere other
than on the posterior - Valuans believing that female posteriors have extra
fat on them especially for that purpose. (Some Valuans even believe that the
females who require punishment the most are endowed with the chubbiest
posteriors).

The realization that she was going to be sold to that man came over Li'sar.
Her heart started pounding. She slowly sank to the floor, her head spinning.
What was to come of her? Looking around, she saw that the other girls had the
same sense of dread as her.

---

Kalhune and Token galloped along the road, heading for Ventruse. Their jobs be
damned, they had each known Dalvid for more than five years, and he was one of
the most honorable men they knew. They didn't understand exactly why he had
been acting the way he had, or why he was going to Ventruse, but they knew he
was, and they would follow him there. He might need their help!

---

Dalvid looked up and down the slave markets of Ventruse. There were many women
being sold, the auctioneers were rushing the sales, wanting to sell as many as
they could before dusk, and the halt of trade. Other merchants tried to sell
their slaves on the street, directly.

One came up to Dalvid, with two stripped women beside him. "Sir, would you
like to buy these fine slaves?"

Dalvid decided to try his luck describing Li'sar to the merchant. "I haven't
seen the slave you're talking about," the merchant replied, "but look, fine
Gwendolyn will make you forget all about her!" He moved Gwendolyn's bare
breasts as close to Dalvid as he could.

Dalvid pushed past the man, continuing his search. To no avail, he couldn't
see her anywhere. He felt his heart pounding, growing more and more desperate.
It was getting dark, the markets would soon be closed. He would find an inn
though. Maybe she hadn't been sold yet. Maybe. He would stay here until he
found her, however long it took.

He heard someone calling his name, he turned to look, but he couldn't see
anyone. He continued walking, but then he heard the call again, turning he saw
Kalhune and Token. What were they doing here?

Kalhune spoke between breaths, he and Token had been running. "We're not sure
what you're doing here, but we came to help. You might like to know that we
saw a group of slaves being taken out of the city when we came in. That girl -
Li'sar I think her name is, I think she was among them."

Dalvid listened, and nodded intently, "we have to find her!" He exclaimed,
running towards the rail where he had left his horse. Kalhune and Token
followed, "the city gate is going to close soon!" Token shouted.

They saddled their horses as quick as they could. But they were confounded:
the city gate had just been closed as they arrived at it.

"Open the gate, we need to get out!" Dalvid insisted to the guard stationed
there.

"I'm sorry sir," the guard replied, "the gates cannot be opened until
morning."

"But we must get out. It's urgent." Dalvid insisted.

"Sir, the gate may not be opened until morning," the guard replied.

Dalvid knew the penalty for bribing a public official. He had to try it
anyway. He held out a silver coin. The guard looked at it, considered, and
then nodded. Taking the coin, he slid the gates open just far enough for the
three men to ride out.

"Do you know which way they were headed?" Dalvid asked his companions.

"I'm really not sure. I don't know." Token replied. "Maybe that way" he said
pointing.

"What are we going to do when we catch them?" Kalhune asked as they galloped
along.

"I have money to buy her back. But if that doesn't work, there are other
ways," Dalvid answered, motioning towards the hilt of his sword. Kalhune and
Token saw the measure of his resolve.

They rode, and duly they saw the party of slaves, guarded by four Valuans, on
the side of a hill. Dalvid could just make out Li'sar, standing naked, just a
collar around her neck.

They were talking with some foreigners - five foreign men with beards. "Let's
not go so fast down to them," Dalvid said cautiously, and then dismounted. The
men peaked over a rocky crag at what was transpiring.

Money was changing hands. The slaves had chains put on them. "They're selling
them!" Token whispered, "They're selling them to foreigners."

"There's nine of them, and only three of us," Dalvid reasoned. "We'll wait for
the Valuans to go, and then when those foreigners make camp for the night,
we'll capture them, and set the slaves free."

"What happened to buying her?" Token asked.

"Those aren't Valuans!" Dalvid responded, "They are foreigners, how dare they
come and buy Valuan slaves, we will capture them and free all the slaves."

Token nodded. "Capturing them isn't our only option." He answered, motioning
to his sword. He had seen what some foreigners did to their slaves; he didn't
like it.

The transaction was completed. The Valuans left, and the foreigners journeyed
on for a while - they were on foot - and led the slaves at a fast pace in
their shackles.

Dalvid followed at a distance with his companions, waiting for the men to
camp, hoping they wouldn't be spotted.

The slavers yelled for the slaves to hurry up. One of them pulled out a whip,
and cracked it above the slave's heads. The women were almost running now,
going as fast as they could in their shackles.

Token put his hand on his sword. Dalvid watched with disgust in the fading
light, hoping these men would choose to camp soon.

But they kept marching on. Li'sar couldn't keep up the pace, and she fell
over. One of the slavers said some very unkind things to her, and pulling out
his whip began to rain down lashes on her back, once, twice, thrice. Li'sar
covered her head and back with her arms, crying and begging for it to stop.

Dalvid had seen enough. He spurred his horse. Token was right behind him, and
then Kalhune.

"Leave her alone," Dalvid demanded, just twenty paces away from them now.

The slaver looked up, "who are you?" He demanded in reply.

"You men have no rights to own slaves here. This is Valua. Leave the women,
and go on your way." Dalvid answered him.

"We paid for these slaves, we will keep them, and we will treat them how we
like," the man replied.

Li'sar took her hands off her stinging body, and looked up at the dark figure
on the horse. Could that be him?

Her thoughts were brutally interupted when the slaver punctuated his point by
lashing the whip down on her again. She screamed in pain.

Token had seen enough. His sword was drawn, and his horse lept into action. A
swing of his sword later, and the slaver had no hand with which to use his
whip.

The man screamed in pain now, and started running blindly away. The others
drew their swords.

Seeing the Valuans on horseback, sword drawn, was too much for them. They ran,
except one who held one of the slave girls, and put his sword to her throat.

"Don't move any closer, or she dies!" He threatened.

Valuans would never engage in such a dishonorable or cowardly act. Dalvid
sneered at him. "Let her go now, or you will surely die."

"Don't move any closer, move back, leave me alone, or she dies!" The man
repeated.

"If you let her go now, and drop your weapon, we will let you go" Dalvid
answered him.

The man thought for a second. He realized he had no choice, and he complied.
Token rode after him though, and dismounting, grabbed the man around the neck.

"You said you'd let me go!" The man protested.

"Yes and I will" Token replied, "In a moment."

He held the man up to look him in the eye. Then he made two parallel cuts on
the man's cheek with his sword. The Valuan sign of an evildoer. He would be
marked as a criminal anywhere in Valua. "If I see you again, you will die"
Token told him, before flinging him away.

Dalvid was already at Li'sar's side. He undid her chains. Then he held her.

"Am I yours now Master?" Li'sar asked, between tears.

Dalvid nodded. "I told you you were mine, and you are. You are mine forever."

And she was.
