I have a soft spot for superhero fiction. I have fond memories of the 
many stories I've enjoyed in the past, from Ann Douglas' "Ultrawoman 
and Mega Girl" to Richard Marnet's "The Bondage Perils of Supergirl" so 
I thought I'd revisit the genre for a mega-review of ten or so stories 
chosen from various websites I list on my site. 

Superheroerotica falls into four basic categories. Most common are what 
I call the Superhero(ine) Fallen type, where the character experiences 
intense sexual humiliation, degradation, or servitude the squeaky-clean 
comics code would never touch on.  The superhero may or may not come 
back after the fall, but that's not really the point of the story -- what's 
important is how they react to it, which can make for fascinating 
reading. There's also the straightforward adventure story which 
includes sex as part of the plot, and the flat-out sex story which is little 
else (like the Green Lantern fic below) and the romantic story, which 
can be either slash or straight. There are variations and combinations 
of these, of course.

As with the Lord of the Rings stories I reviewed a month ago I have a 
personal yardstick for what makes a good superhero sex story. First of 
all, the characters, if borrowed, must be in character, and use/discuss 
their superpowers in some way (otherwise, they could be anyone.) If 
there is sexual mayhem and abuse, it can be well-detailed but not 
gratuitous, and part of a coherent plot, with the reactions of the 
superheroes presented as true to their character. There must also be 
adventure of some sort (even if it's only a capture scenario) or a villain 
who must be stopped, with some relevant tension (will they or won't 
they get away?) even if the adventure ends badly. Costumes and capes 
are nice, but not necessary if the other elements are there. Give me all 
that, and I'll be a happy camper.

These are the stories I chose for review. I read others (including Homer 
Vargas' excellent Wonder Woman pregnancy stories) but those reviews 
will have to wait for another day.

What if: The New X-Men were X-Women? [D]

As you can tell by the title, this story was what is known in movie 
circles as a "high concept." And as if that wasn't enough, the author 
goes on to say: "All female mutants were now enhanced in ways no 
ordinary woman could be. All female mutants would now have the 
ability to produce breast milk at will according to their bust size from 
the age of 8 up. In addition, the urine of all female mutants would now 
be delicious wine. All female mutants now had a life span of 300 years 
with youth for 299 of those years. All female mutants were also now 
nymphomaniacs with their own sex. They would now crave both lesbian 
sex and lesbian pain in their warped minds. The pain of the whip was 
now equal to the joy of sex to all female mutants on Earth." Sounds like 
mindless slutty fun to me.

Oops... perhaps a bit too mindless... the author had no idea how to tell a 
story, even a parodic one, teetering between poorly written by-the-
numbers sex scenes and long stretches of exposition which read like an 
outline for a story rather than the story itself, The heroines themselves 
were handled, uh, sensitively, sort of, especially in this scene before 
poor Professor Xavier's memorial service:

Storm let loose her own stream of pee into Jean's eager mouth. Jean 
drank as much of Storm's piss as she could, licking up the stray droplets 
as Storm's piss ended. Storm tasted her own pee as she deeply french-
kissed Jean. 

"Please, Ororo, whip me some more. Please! It feels sooo goood!" Jean 
begged. 

"I'm sorry, Jean," Storm sadly shook her head.  "We have to get ready for 
the funeral. Later we'll whip and fuck each other some more."

What a way to show respect for the old guy.

In  sum, unconvincing BDSM, laughable attempts at characterization, 
and a lack of slam-bang adventure. Not even the tit-squirting and 
watersport kinks were put to good use.  




Green Lantern's Emerald Ecstasy, Parts 1 and 2 [B-/C+]

Superhero Green Lantern has been experiencing a resurgence of 
popularity lately, perhaps because of the animated Justice League series 
and the queer-friendly writers of his comic book (one recent storyline 
was about his gay teen assistant having a crush on him.) At any rate it's 
about time for GL to join the ranks of more established icons like 
Superman and Batman, who have long been the subjects of gay and 
slash fanfic. 

The story's plot is a simple one: the AI inside the XTC 6900 (a new jet) 
has, for unknown reasons, planted some erotic fantasies in GL's mind 
("fantasies of hot, gorgeous twinks running through the locker room 
sword fighting and rubbing each other's muscular chests") so, after a 
shower, GL indulges in them, using his power ring to create an 
"Emerald Love Master" clone of himself, a revolving wheel the clone 
straps him into, and a "cat of night tales" for whipping purposes. As you 
can tell by the preceding element, the story wasn't proofread too well, 
with other terms... "love jewels" in particular... breaking the 
Christopher Street momentum the story got going, and the rampant 
epithetitis annoyed rather than entertained ("the love pole in his 
backdoor grew to twice its length and exploded its green goo all over 
Hal's insides.") 

Not a bad premise for a superhero sex story, but there wasn't much of a 
plot, and the absence of an evil villain or conflict requiring someone to 
save the day (this IS a comic superhero story, after all) was a big minus. 
Also, the writing left a lot to be desired -- less descriptions of muscles, 
and more action, please.

This is what happens when slash writers spoof themselves and their 
medium. 

The X-men, as everyone knows,  are a group of young-adult mutant 
superheroes living in Professor Xavier's roomy mansion, where they 
receive instruction in using their awesome powers for the good. Bobby 
Drake (Iceman) is one of them. As the title says, he joins a Star Trek 
slash mailing list (the main venue for slashers' story exchange, 
criticism, and feedback) to feed his latent homosexual fantasies. The 
banal, earnest story he posts, "Tom Paris has a Wet Dream" is hilarious 
in itself ("In his dream, the door to his bedroom slid open and a large, 
muscled dark figure walked in. The big man had short cropped dark 
hair and deep gentle eyes. An erotic design was tattooed along his left 
temple and his cooper skin gleamed. Tom moaned in delight at the 
beauty before him and threw back the blankets") and in the next story 
he receives an email about it from a poster who is revealed to be the 
hairy-chested Cajun stud Wolverine, a student at the same academy... 
though you wouldn't know that unless you have a passing acquaintance 
with the X-men fandom. A parody in a parody, you might say.

What the hell, I thought it was funny.




Only Us [B]

Bobby Drake and the Xmen figure again in this slash story, which was 
of the romantic/sexual encounter type. I admit I'm not too fond of these. 
There's barely any plot, for one thing, and in slash in particular the 
overwrought drama becomes tubs of frothy, sweet-scented bubbles for 
the reader to wallow in:

Cannonball woke up the next morning. Funny. He hadn't even noticed 
he'd fall asleep. Then he remembered. Remy . . . He smelled the pillow 
and tears filled his eyes. He remembered the night they'd shared and 
then how he just left . . . to find Rogue. He had cried himself to sleep. It 
was only a one-night-stand. They had both agreed on that. But Sam just 
couldn't shake off the feeling of last night. His body pressed against 
Remiss, the Cajun buried deep inside of him and that incredible heat and 
pleasure. He sobbed quietly in his room.

That pretty much sets the tone for soap-opera angst wherein 
Cannonball, in anguish over Wolverine's rejection, tries to kill himself 
by jumping into a creek. He is rescued by fellow student Bobby, who 
proceeds to have some psyche-healing sex with him.

The sex was OK (most slash sex is) but everything else was dull -- not 
badly written, just not distinctive. The characters could have been 
Gundam Wing ones for all I knew, their atrocious accents aside. No 
high-flying adventure, no superpowers demonstrated, not even any 
goddam lycra.

Probably acceptable if you like slash and have a crush on these 
characters, but personally, I like more substance.




The Legion of Super Slaves [C-]

Often in these stories I wonder if the writers are really fans of the 
superhero(ines) in question, or secretly resent them.

Ten female Legionnaires are on a routine mission when they are 
captured by Marlk Desaad ("an infamous torturer, actual kicked out of 
the Krund Empire for being too effective") who tells them they are to be 
broken and trained as his slaves. Not being a very imaginative sort, he 
goes about it in the most cliched of ways:

A voice boomed over the loud speaker,   "Welcome back to the land of the 
living, Apparition. I will give you a chance to spare yourself some 
harm. Admit that you are a slave and a fuck toy. If you do so now you 
wont be harmed. Well, much." It chuckled. 
  
"Never! When Ultra Boy finds me, they'll have to pick you up in pieces."  
She yelled. 

"Have it your way, then." The voice said. In her anger Tinya failed to 
notice a vine that creped up to her leg. Tinya saw it to late, and it 
wrapped around her leg. She immediately tried to phase away, but 
couldn't. Another vine grabbed her other leg and pulled her into the 
bushes. She fought with all her might but the vines wouldn't give an 
inch. After a few minutes, Tinya saw what was pulling her towards it. It 
looked like a huge bulb, but with vines coming out of it. All of a sudden a 
voice came over the loud speaker. 
  
"Welcome, Ms. Wazzo. This is our little green house. That is a plant 
nicknamed the manplant in front of you. It survives on certain fluids, 
fluids that come from certain female races." Tinyas face went pale when 
she suddenly realized what he was referring to.  "I see you understand 
what I mean. A few more things you should know. One, this is not the 
only plant here. Two, this plant has been without its food for months, so 
its very hungry. And lastly, I will send a tape of what happens here to 
everyone your family, but with a little editing and postdating. Everyone 
will think that you were a secret porn star."

Oops, guess the old boy forgot he told everyone the superheroines had 
been killed in a supernova a few paragraphs earlier. And it's 
loudspeaker, not loud speaker, dumbass. (The rest of the writing was 
atrocious as well.)

Now, I can understand a comic fan's wanting to put their idols through 
sexual ordeals, even hellish ones, because that is subject matter the 
comics never touch on; even if, in the end, evil triumphs (as in the 
Knyght and Supergirl stories below) it's an interesting exercise to see 
how the superhero would react to his or her defeat. But sadly in too 
many stories the humiliation and abuse have no point at all -- the 
victims could be any hapless females, and I wonder if the writers are 
indulging in the male prerogative to take their favorite babes down a 
peg or two (or more than a peg) and render them submissive and docile 
as part of the natural order of things.

Such was the case of this story, which made no excuses about its purpose 
("Please give me some freakin suggestions! Should I turn Triad into a 
dildo? Have Dawnstar raped by a birdman? What? I have barely gotten 
any feed back on ideas. Come one, if people make just one suggestion on 
just one character it would make this thing go much faster.") And so I 
make no excuses about my assumption that the writer is male, and 
young, and hasn't had the life experiences to write a more nuanced 
fanfic, porny or otherwise.

In short, gratuitous, poorly written, and ugly. The scary thing is that 
these stories are pretty common.




A Matter of Time [A]

Black Canary and the Huntress team up for this adventure which pits 
them against mind-controlling villain H. R. Mesmer. He's been 
hypnotizing young woman and selling them as sex slaves, and BC and 
the Huntress don't fare much better. They're overpowered and 
hypnotized by high-tech earcuffs, after which Mesmer forces them to 
reveal their mundane identities; he then gives them post-hypnotic 
instructions intended to humiliate them, and they're soon having 
abandoned sex with anyone they meet, including each other.

This was one of the best stories I've read because it did everything very 
well: there was sex, suspense, costumes and capes, action-adventure, and 
some kink (mind control). The superheroes were in character and did 
what superheroes are supposed to do: hunt down criminals and be 
captured... and although humiliating things happened to the gals, it was  
integrated into the plot and not so glaringly gratuitous as in the former 
story. Some humor was there, too, such as Black Canary's compulsion to 
have sex with a cop who stops her on the street:

With the quick moves only the Huntress could do, she whisked a hand 
out to his holster and grabbed his gun. He backed off a couple steps. 

"Now look, lady," he bargained. "This ain't gonna do either of us any 
good!" 

"Sure it is, handsome!" she laughed. "Drop your drawers!" She'd never 
once stopped fingering herself. 

"I can't do that, ma'am. Not out here in public." 

"Well, then I'm gonna have to shoot you, Officer", she squinted to get his 
name. "McClusky. That or tell Commissioner Gordon how you lost your 
gun!" 

That wouldn't look good on his record, McClusky knew. "Please, lady," he 
began. 

"Oh it's lady nowahhh! Oooohhhhhis it?" she laughed. "Drop your 
trousers, officer!"

Later there's a neat bondage scene where the two superheroines are 
tied back to back and forced to perform fellatio on three thugs apiece, 
with the instructions not to let any of them go soft. The problem is the 
thugs are standing some distance away, which means a suspenseful tug 
of war between the two as they attempt to position their mouths... a 
unique twist on the "superheroine in peril" formula.

The story was so well written, in fact, I expected the two to be saved, 
perhaps by Batman and Robin, who make a cameo appearance, and 
continue their hapless adventures in another tale. But alas, the two 
remain in permanent thrall (you'll have to the story to find out how and 
why.) Though it's very clear that even in the end the writer has an 
affection for these characters, even as their downward spiral continues.




The Capture of Star Warrior [A/A-]

This story was another one of "Superheroine Fallen" type, but 
surprisingly sensitive to its victim's fate. Star Warrior is a well-
regarded superheroine who is captured when she tries to rescue a 
young man from a group of muggers. Unfortunately she is captured in 
turn when they squirt her with a kryptonite-like potion ("lacitite") that 
causes her to lose her super powers. It also causes unbearable sexual 
stimulation, and she is bound, stripped, and teased unmercifully by the 
thugs until she reaches the villains' hideout, where she 
is to be unmasked by the villains Warlord and Dark Mistress with pics 
snapped for posterity. Tit-milking follows, the milk later ingested by 
Dark Mistress to give her the same powers -- a neat excuse for a 
lactation scene, instead of having the villains do it out of sadism.

The story departed from the norm in that it was told from a sympathetic 
male POV -- that of the young man dragged along as a hostage.  Though 
horrified and shocked, he doesn't hold back any details of the 
superheroine's demise (but does not revel in them.). It's a interesting, if 
melodramatic plot device, and provides a way to sidestep the cruelty 
associated with the genre ("Tears began to stream down the heroine's 
face. I can only imagine the pain she must have been feeling.")  Said 
cruelty included the milking, which was a common element of 
superheroine stories on the site it came from, where it's also depicted in 
explicit cartoon panels. It's too common a theme to be random, so 
something archetypical must going on: a powerful woman's breasts, her 
most visible female attribute, sucked dry as part of her submission. 
Hmmm. 

In sum, a tale more emotionally gripping than the standard unmaking 
scenario; a shame it was left unfinished. 




Wonder Woman: The Conquest of Paradise [A+]

Of all the superheroines, Wonder Woman is the most fun to exploit. Not 
only is she the most powerful, but she is also the most beautiful, the 
most idealistic, the most popular, and... she's a virgin, as well! 

Consequently she is both idol and victim to many, the tale of her 
corruption being a most delicious challenge for a writer  -- the depth of 
her fall from good roughly equal, in degree, to her original purity and 
righteousness. In this story, not only she is transformed into a willing 
sex slave under the villain's control, but her whole island of high-
minded amazons is as well. BWAH-HAH-HA! And who isn't to say they 
didn't deserve it, for being such virginal goody-two-shoes?

(OK, now the truth of the matter is that WW's creator, Charles Moulton -- 
a pseudonym for Dr. William Marston, a self-aggrandizing psychologist 
--  was hardly a straight-living guy himself. According to Les Daniels' 
"Wonder Woman: The Complete History" he was polyamorous, living 
with two women and having children by both of them, and keenly 
interested in mind control -- he invented the lie detector -- and believed 
bondage and helpless restraint was actually good for a person's psyche. 
If you want to know more read this fascinating book for yourself.)

In this story The Warlock, the logical, mild-mannered villain of the 
piece, subdues Wonder Woman and her sister Drusilla (Wonder Girl) 
quite easily with their own magic lassos, and converts them through a 
mechanical dildo/nipple electrifying machine into sex slaves 
subservient to his will; as part of the conversion he also destroys their 
sense of namby-pamby goodness and decency. He then gives them 
devices to take back to Paradise Island to convert all the other amazons 
as well. But for a change the villain has thought to justify his actions:

"Now tell me, Wonder Girl, how many times have you used your 
lasso on people the same way I'm using it now."

"Gosh, hundreds of times!" the memories of her triumphant adventures 
came rushing back to her, allowing her to cast off some of her fear and 
apprehension.

"And you sister, Wonder Woman, how many times has she used hers?"

"Oh, even more! Probably thousands!"
    "Yes, I'm sure. So it stands to reason that you and your sister have 
performed this action upon thousands of different people."

"Yes, that's true."

"Now tell me, Wonder Girl, do you enjoy being ordered in such a 
fashion?"

"Wha." a confused look on her face answered his question.

"Do you like what's happening Now? Do you enjoy being probed and 
questioned this way?"

"No!" she finally answered emphatically. "Not at all!"

"It feels like a violation, doesn't it? It feels like your mind and spirit 
are 
open to the manipulation and control of another."

"Yes, it does." she answered. "Like I'm being."

"Like you're being raped?"

"Yes! That's it," she beamed, her confused mind latching on to the lasso's 
commanded truth. "It's like you're taking my mind away without my 
letting you."

"Indeed. Then every time you or Wonder Woman has used your lassos, 
you have committed a form of rape."

She stopped, suddenly, the words ringing through her mind. "But we 
only used it on bad people."

"IN YOUR OPINION, they were bad."

After many hours of endless orgasms in the machine Wonder Woman 
reacts thusly when she is released:

[The Warlock] pointed at a glowing platform in the center of the room. A 
black leather uniform hung there, suspended to match her perfect 
dimensions. Like Drusilla's, it was a mockery of her old strapless 
costume. Black boots, black gloves and a black tiara hung in their 
appropriate positions, a black leather bikini bottom covering the 
crotch. A strapless brassiere designed to look like an eagle in flight 
covered the chest, leaving just enough to the imagination to arouse the 
onlooker.

Diana shuddered and stared at her sister. Submit, as she did? become a 
willess agent of evil? Never! Yet at the same time, an unknown longing 
rose from the depth of her soul. To be stimulated as she had... to taste the 
pleasures that came with such slavery... and that new uniform, for all 
its twisted mockery, seemed strangely. arousing.

The end result is the fall from grace isn't so bad after all; at least the 
gals know what all the man-woman fuss is about now. 

An excellent story, one of the best Wonder Woman ones I've read.




Maddening Torture [B+]

In slash, it's the male superheroes who experience the abuse. Batman is 
captured by the Joker in this story, where he is forced to sexually 
service the villain as Barbara Gordon is being held hostage on the other 
side of town; if he refuses, Harley Quinn will off her with a guillotine. 
The story starts off with a bang as the insane Joker teases and torments 
his captive:

All Bruce could do was endure the torment until Dick or Tim could 
discover where Harley was hiding, but by then the Joker would have 
gotten what he wanted. He would have seen his arch-enemy grovel at 
his feet in the throes of a most human and base physical need. For at 
least three hours, by Bruce's internal clock, the torment upon his body 
had been going on. First with a variety of cheap plastic toys designed to 
humiliate and penetrate. Then large and cumbersome vibrating devices 
had been shoved crudely into his body, eliciting pain and pleasure at 
once though they did not delve too deep. For a man who kept his 
emotions and sexual desired under wraps, it was too much to bear.

The rest of the story was powerful but confusingly written, events 
presented out of sequence with the POV fluttering back and forth with 
no warning. On the plus side, however, the writer did a good, if 
melodramatic, job in describing the scenario, especially the Joker's 
dialogue ("You've been taken before, have you? So much for the clean 
and pure hero-type. Was it Super-Ham perhaps, or is that why you keep 
the kiddies around?") and the overall cruelty of it was deliciously 
subversive, as a slash writer would put it.

Altogether it would have been a very nice character humiliation study, 
but the writer muddied the water by revealing to us (the readers) that 
Batman has been homosexually inclined all along, and has been fooling 
around with Robin -- the two are not strangers to D/s games. Neither is 
Batman a stranger to humiliation -- in fact, he comes to enjoy the 
Joker's attentions in a sick way. So hey, being butt-raped by a psycho 
isn't so bad, really!

I've encountered these excuses many times in slash stories and I'm not 
sure why the writers feel obligated to put them in. I can only guess they 
might feel bad about torturing their heroes, so they insert the caveat 
that they (their bodies and "dark sides," if not their intellects) secretly 
enjoy it.  But the story was deliciously mean-spirited as it stood, with 
Batman's sexuality left hetero, or possibly bi... and while I might believe 
Batman and Robin have a thing (who doesn't?) I can't see Batman 
reveling in his own humiliation. He takes his crimefighting career too 
seriously for that.  If he wanted to be sexually humiliated, he'd go to a 
professional -- he has the megabucks of Bruce Wayne, after all.

This story features the superheroine team of Hi-Tech, China Doll, and 
Piktur Perfekt, original creations of the writer; they have other 
adventures besides this one. They are unusual in that they aren't quite 
heroes, or villains; they seem to be mercenaries who get into amusing 
scrapes, always with mischievous sexual overtones, more Playboy 
cartoon than Marvel comic. 

In this story they have been contracted by the Geek, an amusing 
teenage villain who is just what his name says, to take down superhero 
Captain America, so they hook Cap into a virtual reality machine which 
puts him through a number of strange, dreamlike  scenarios, including 
being a seedy drunk in a ghetto flophouse. (The writer shows a great 
knowledge of the facts of the comics multiverse.) To subdue Cap further 
they turn him into a baby, but find the Geek has trapped them in the 
machine and has turned the tables on them. Things end poorly for the 
gals, with one transformed into a wind-up doll and the other a happy 
naked housewife and sex slave to The Geek:

Her husband... the boy... he was VERY good-looking. Dreamy creamy 
slightly chapped lips, beautiful skinny body with just a hint of a couch-
potato potbelly, lovely pale skin, and dark circles under his eyes. A hint 
of dandruff in his hair. Everything... everything... she wanted in a man. 
In a husband. Was he her husband? Hi-Tech closed her eyes and tried to 
concentrate... Her brain seemed to be moving in slow motion, but she 
was not really alarmed. It was a pleasant feeling. She felt like honey 
dripping from a spoon, shiny and slow and golden. The martini 
sparkled. 

"Some deep, instinctual part of your brain is still resisting," the boy 
explained. "It's pushing against the false reality. Seeing me, for 
instance, that caused a surge of resistance. But I had expected that. I 
factored it into the equation. I factored EVERYTHING into the equation. 
I'm a genius, you see." 

She remembered something about her husband. Her husband was a 
genius. He was amazing and strong and smart and sexy. He was the love 
of her life. She couldn't help but smile. 

"You are such a FINE piece of ass," he explained, as he walked around 
her again. "You and your two teammates are just the most AWESOME 
babes around. Honestly. I'm not just saying that, you know. You three 
are sexier than all those other super nobodies combined. I've wanted to 
add you to my collection for SO long. I just needed the right way to do it. 
And after I invented my virtual reality transmogrifier, well, I KNEW 
you were going to be mine."

This was a very funny (and hot, if you're into mind control) passage 
that may be the "American Dream" of the story's title, at least for a class 
of young male readers of comic books. The two gals are hopelessly 
enslaved (what happened to the third?) but that's all part of the fun of 
the story. No overt sex, but lots of excellent mind control scenes and a 
truly creative imagination.
