Summer of '67

I remember it as a summer of love. It was unexpected. It
was wonderful.
The plane from Paris to New York landed late. A bus
took us to Brooklyn, some place next to a big bridge. I
thought it was the Brooklyn Bridge at first, but I was
wrong. I used to know what people called it, but April,
1967 is a long time ago.
Fort Hamilton was the place where soldiers coming from
Europe got out of the Army. Other things happened there, I
guess, but I never bothered to ask. I stowed my bags at the
Transient NCO Barracks and went looking for a beer. I
should have gone to the NCO Club, but with one day left in
the Army I figured I'd save myself some grief and join the
rest of the short timers at the enlisted men's club. It was
easy to find.
Martha and the Vandellas must have known I was coming.
The first song I heard blasting from the jukebox was "Jimmy
Mack". Yah, "Jimmy Mack, Jimmy why don't you hurry back?
Why don't you hurry back?" I figured they must of been
thinking of me, Jimmy McNeil, and I was back to stay.
I ordered a Bud and a shot of bourbon to get things
started. The place was crowed for a Tuesday night, but I
guess that's the story at most military clubs. Cheap booze
is hard to beat when all a guy's got is his soldiers pay
and it wouldn't go very far in a place like New York City.
I had a glow on when I got back to the barracks,
something to help erase the night.

The noise woke me up. Career enlisted men don't skip
meals and it seemed like the way to the mess hall started
at my door. I figured I'd join them in a healthy breakfast.
It took me a minute to find the opener and then I popped
the top of a warm Budweiser I snuck out of the club the
night before. I drank the hair of the dog that bit me and
felt much better for it. I was mellow and ready for my last
day in the Army.

"Sergeant McNeil, you're in charge of the police call.
I don't want to see a cigarette butt or piece of paper
anywhere when you're finished."
There were maybe 25 soldiers getting ready to head
back to civilian life. No one minded being on a shit
detail, not when they knew they'd be out in a couple of
hours. No one wanted to mess things up, just 'pick 'em up
the first time and reassemble on the road'.
One of the guards at the front gate was happy to show
me the way to civilian life. "It's easier to walk to the
subway than to wait for the bus. The R Train ends at 95th
Street. You can't miss it. Short. 97 days. FTA."
"Yah, I'm more than short now."
Most of my stuff was in the VW Bus I shipped back from
Europe on a boat. I gave the Army all my uniforms and only
had a few civies in an overnight bag. I had to wait a
couple of days for my vehicle to clear customs and decided
to check out the bright lights in the big city. I had lots
of time.

"Hey, lifer, got any spare change?"
I guess she was a hippie, but she wasn't dirty or
smelly like they said in the Stars and Stripes. I always
figured the Military Newspaper was slanted after reading
that we killed most of the population of Viet Nam two or
three times and still hadn't won the war. Guess they got
everything wrong, big and small.
"Who you callin' a lifer, hippie chick? Can't you see
I'm back in the world to stay?" She was young and I liked
her smile. I liked everything about her, even her funny
clothes. I really liked watching her boobs bounce around
under her peasant blouse. "How much you trying to raise,
girl?"
"I'm not a girl. I'm Ruby and right now I'm working on
lunch money."
"Tell you what, Ruby. I'm about ready for lunch myself
so why don't you join me and let me know what's happened in
the last three years."
She knew a place close to the Subway Station where we
could eat lunch and talk as long as we wanted. She was from
Eau Claire, Wisconsin. She came to New York with a friend,
but he wandered off and she was by herself. She wasn't
going to stay for much longer. She had some plans and she
had everything she owned in the two bags she carried with
her.
"How would you like to be my guide, Ruby? I want to go
downtown and see the things people will ask me about when I
get home." She was looking at me with some concern so I
figured she wasn't interested in wandering around with some
guy she just met. "I can give you a few bucks and playing
tourist seems better than hitting GIs up for spare change."

She knew all about the subway. We got exact change and
hopped on the next train heading for the city. We walked
around and went into buildings she named and I forgot. I
was more interested in my guide. Her sweet voice. Her
country girl charm. Her enthusiasm.
"What do people do here at night?"
"I don't know what people do, but if I have bread, I
like to score some dope and mellow out."
"Sounds good to me, Ruby. Let's do it."
"Bad thought, Jim. It's not safe to be high on the
city streets after dark."
She never was very clear about where she lived. I told
her I was going to find a place to stay downtown. We could
score some dope and be off the street. She wasn't having
any of it at first, then she talked about a bath tub and
how I seemed like a nice guy. She talked herself into it by
the time we got to a hotel I could afford.
"You can wash my back, Jimmy."
     "What did you say?"
"You heard me. I want someone to wash my back and
decided to let you know you're getting laid up front so I
don't have to worry about when you're going to make your
move." She took my hand and pulled me into the bathroom.
The shower was in the tub where we stood and cleaned
off the grime from our day on the streets. It had been a
long time since she last had a chance to use a tub and she
didn't want to get out. I did real well at first, but when
I started to rub some soap on her back, my cock developed a
mind of its own.
She was looking at my erection and laughing. I wasn't
used to a girl who would do something like that.
"It's about time. It's embarrassing for a girl to get
naked in front of a guy and not see him get it up. I
thought you might be gay."
I dried her off and had a chance to feel every part of
her body through the towel.
She dried me off next and took full advantage of the
opportunity. "Nice ass you got there, Jimmy. In fact nice
body. Have to admit the Army kept you in good shape."
She grabbed my erection and pulled me into the bedroom
where she pushed me down on the bed.
"Don't move a muscle, Jimmy. I want to be in charge."
She kissed her way from my lips down my chest and
arrived at my cock. She nipped at my erection with her
teeth, just enough to let me know she was there. Her lips
surrounded my cock and it started to disappeared into her
mouth.
"If you move, I'll stop. Just lay there and enjoy."
She sucked and teased until I was ready to cum. She
stopped and asked me how I liked it. She started again and
knew when to stop. She did it twice more. Her hands
wandered over my body like she was the owner taking
inventory. She moved back toward my face and let her hard
nipples glide across my chest as her lips tried to find my
mouth. She spread her legs outside of mine, and her hand
searched for the erection hidden under her stomach. She
guided my cock to her pussy and slowly eased it inside of
her wet hole.
"Don't move. Just relax." She fucked me slowly, in and
out, in and out. She raised her upper body so her tits
could bounce on my chests. I felt their warmth and heat.
Her mouth was next to my ear. I could hear her breath
and I could hear her talk. "Do you like the way my pussy
grabbed you cock? Does it feel good? Are you ready to cum
yet? Do you want me to suck your cock dry after you get
off?"
I don't know if it was the way she moved or the way
she sounded. I tried to control myself, but exploded
instead. I filled her pussy and felt her body arch with an
orgasm of her own. She knew what she wanted. Finally, our
bodies stopped moving, but she still held me inside her. We
were close and it felt right. We lay together for a long
time before she moved over to my side.
"Let me clean your cock." She licked the juices from
the side of my cock. Her mouth slide over it and she sucked
until there was nothing left inside. I was hard and ready
for more. "I don't want to make a mess on the bed. Let me
go to the bathroom and then we can try this again."
She came back with a wash cloth and didn't have to
leave again until neither one of us could move. We fucked
three or four times and then fell asleep holding each other
close.

The next two days belonged to us. We explored the city
in the light, and smoked dope and made love in the dark. It
seemed like we'd been together for a long time and not just
for a day. It seemed right and she wanted to be with me.
The micro bus was our home on wheels. I wanted to see
Niagra Falls. We went to Chicago where I met some of her
friends. We made it to Denver in one long day and camped
out under the stars. The Rockies were beautiful, but we
both thought Utah was boring. We went to Yosemite Park in
California. It was crowded until we hiked to the back
country. We made love under the stars and planned our trip
to San Francisco.
There was a rumor people were living in Golden Gate
Park, but we didn't see any signs of that in May, 1967.
There was no place to park the micro bus so we moved on
until we found the Haight. The people living there were
still hippies and it didn't take long before we found
people willing to share.
Not too many people had money and those that did were
suspect. Working was considered a waste of time and only
done to survive. I learned how to buy $50 dollars worth of
grass and sell it in nickel bags to the tourists. I'd make
a $100 in an afternoon and have enough cash to live for a
couple of weeks.
We smoked hash and talked about amazing things. We
listened to music. Music was in the air and ranged from
guitar riffs to sitars. The streets were filled with the
sounds of bells, the fragrance of incense, lots of beads,
fringe vests, paisley and new music from The Dead to the
Mamas and Papas. Every idea was a good one, but we seemed
to forget them all the next day.
Ruby and I made love after we took some LSD. We melted
together and became one person. Drugs weren't good or bad.
They were there to use and we did. Everything in large
supply and nothing cost very much.
We were in love during the Summer of Love and life was
easy and perfect, but nothing lasts forever.
My car was parked most of the time. Walking was easier
and a bus or trolley car didn't need a parking place.
Sometimes we had a reason to leave. We had to drive south
for two hours to go to the Monterey Pop Festival. We saw
Ravi Shankar, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, The
Who and some other people perform in the name of peace and
love.

Ruby was crying when I got home. "Did you hear what
happened to Billy Johnson. Some guys from town beat him up
and took his dope."
"I know a lot of bad things are happening now, Ruby.
Too many people and no one cares."
"I want to leave, Jimmy. Some people I know are going
to Oregon. There's a commune where things are still right.
Let's go. Let's leave here"
We had this conversation before and so far it didn't
amount to much. What could we do on a commune? We needed a
city and Oregon wasn't the answer.
We heard the radio play Buffalo Springfield's new
song, "For What It's Worth". They talked about the young
people in Los Angeles standing up to the police night after
night. The oppressor pigs never got the best of the boys
who only wanted to walk around, drive their cars and have a
life.
"Maybe we could go to Los Angeles, Ruby. It might be
better for us. I need to be in a city."
We talked some more. We made love and smoked dope.
Some of our friends disappeared, others got sick and bad
drugs took the toll of a few more.

I made $900 selling dope and felt like a capitalist.
We needed money if we wanted to go to Los Angeles. She
wasn't home, but the envelope was there on my bed.

"My love, Jimmy. Today, I read something in one of
your books. It was a poem by Allen Ginsberg called 'Howl'
and he told me what was going to happen.

"'I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
madness, starving hysterical naked, running down the negro
streets at dawn looking for an angry fix.'

"It's happening now and I can't stand it anymore. I'll
always love you, but I have to go. You need your city and I
need my life. Take care of yourself and remember me if you
can. Love you, Ruby"

Notes: In those times, people who were not career military
kept track of the days until they would get out. When the
days dwindled to only a few, you can hear them tell
everyone they were "short, 65 days" or whatever the current
count. The same people and quite a few others seemed to
have a common opinion of the Army which they expressed in
short hand, FTA. Fuck the Army wasn't said as much, but
everyone knew what was meant.
