More sad are these we daily see:

Discord was doing her version of a happy dance. "I knew
it, I knew it, I knew it!" she shouted in triumph. "He's
doin' my homework for a whole century!"

Eros tried to tamp down her enthusiasm. "Okay, okay, you
don't have to rub it in." He gestured to where his brother,
Anteros was leaning against a cloud, his chin resting on
his hands, eyes downcast. "You could take some pity on him,
I've never seen him this forlorn."

"Pity?" Discord scoffed. "He made the bet with me fair and
square. You know, you were there to witness it. Valentine's
Day, 2002, he would make Valentine Sanderson fall in love
with him. And here it is, the appointed day, and she's not
one bit closer to being in love with him than she was when
they first met!"

"Um, I hate to disagree with you, your mother being Eris
and all, but that wasn't exactly the bet."

She put her hands on her hips. "Excuse me?"

"He said he could get her to 'lose herself to love', not
fall in love with him," Eros corrected.

"Oh, what does it matter?" Anteros, "Tony", finally spoke
up. "Discord is right - I failed." He sighed, bright blue
eyes duller than the depths of the Mediterranean. "Nothing
I tried worked."

"Come on now little brother," Eros sat beside him and put
his arm around his shoulders. "That strip club thing was a
stroke of genius."

Discord snorted. "Bust."

"It would have worked, if it hadn't been for -"

"Hey, and the singing telegram on her birthday!" Eros
interrupted. "I would never ever have thought of that."

"Flop." At Eros's look of anger, she shrugged her
shoulders. "What? Like it wasn't a flop?"

"It was," Tony agreed. "Everything I tried ended up
getting screwed up, twisted around, or interrupted." He
got to his feet. "I guess I'm a failure when it comes to
love." He shot his brother a wry smile. "It's a good thing
I'm not the oldest - mortals would have some fucked up love
lives."

He started to dissolve in a cloud of reddish mist. (Most
people labor under the false assumption that all gods have
to do is think themselves somewhere and BOOM! they're
instantly there, or else they snap their fingers and are
immediately transported where they want to go.)

"Don't forget my homework!" Discord called after him. She
laughed gleefully and twirled around. "Ah . . . a century
of never having to look at a history scroll again."

Eros started thoughtfully downward, looking through the
clouds at the scene his brother had been contemplating
earlier. Just as he suspected, it was Valentine Sanderson's
apartment building. He knew his brother better than anyone
else, and his brother hadn't given up, not yet. Tony had
something up his sleeve, he'd bet on it. And he'd gladly
give up his weekly horseshoe game with Hephaistos to know
what it was.

On impulse, Eros turned to Discord. "Oh Discord honey,
care to make a little wager . . . ?"

THE END?

*Author's Note: Eros is the Greek counterpart to the Roman
god Cupid. Aphrodite, concerned that her young son seemed
to have stopped growing, was told by him that only a
brother would cure the trouble. He was therefore given
Anteros who symbolized reciprocated love. Anteros is also
the god who punishes those who scorn love or do not return
the love of others.

Eris is goddess of conflict and strife. Discord is her
daughter. Hephaistos is the Greek god of the forge and
fire. His Roman counterpart is Vulcan.
