Prologue

My name is Michael Collins. This is my story.

You see, my shrink suggested I start this. She said that it might
help me come to grips better with who and what I am.

I've been seeing her now for the past three years or so. She
really is great. If you're ever in the need of a good
psychologist; I highly recommend Dr. Sylvia Plaxton, in Atlanta,
Georgia. Her number is 404-555-7792. Sorry Sly, for the shameless
   plug. :)

   Let's see; where to begin?

It all started in 1999; I suppose.

I had a good life. A good job. I was a software programmer for
Cluster Datatronics, Inc. Had a corner office on the 16th floor
in a posh office building in Buckhead. I wrote the back-end
database indexing code for our multi-architectural eCommerce
transaction processing system. I Earned about $130k a year.

   Life was great.

   I also had Julie.

We had met in a grocery store on August 7th, 1997, at 6:21pm.

I, while honestly not trying to pick her up at the time, asked
her opinion about the freshness of some guavas I was interested
   in buying.

What should have lasted 30 seconds for a conversation, lasted
nearly two hours; both of us standing there in the fruit and
vegetable section of the store discussing everything from our
   careers to politics.

I normally don't believe in love at first sight; but I did know
that something had clicked between the two of us there at that
   fruit stand.

I was too nervous to ask her out at the time. I think she sensed
that. She offered me her business card and told me that if I had
any other fruit questions to feel free to call her. :) The rest
   is history.

She was the love of my life. Aside from the sex being fucking
unbelievable; she was warm and caring. Plus, she was a
techno-geek like myself. We spent Wednesday nights, after
watching Star Trek, trying to hack into each-other's Linux boxes
at the house. She always seemed to win somehow.

I guess it's true when it's said that software programmers don't
   make good system administrators.

Julie worked for BellSouth; the local telephone- (trying to be
   everything)- company.

Julie and I moved up to Atlanta together, from Palo Alto,
   California, in early 1999.

We were going to get married in June of 2000.

Life was great. Wait, I said that already. Sorry.

In California, I was a software developer for a graphics software
company. We put out this really cool software that allowed people
to design 3D worlds and renderings. I worked a lot with SGI Onyx
and Challenge servers running IRIX. It was tres' cool.

Julie was a hardware repair technician for HP. She spent most of
her days fixing broken motherboards from HP9000 servers that were
returned for being faulty by the field technicians at the
customer's site. Man, did she know her way around a logic probe.
   :)

My life changed dramatically on New Year's Eve, that year.

Julie and I were relaxing at home, watching the festivities
around the world on CNN. Boy, did the fireworks look awesome in
Sydney harbor! Neither of us were worried about any Y2K glitches.
In fact, being the techno-geeks which we were; we knew there
would be few, if any, minor problems throughout the world. We
were more worried about the fundamentalist Christians
pontificating the end of the world or some nut-case in New York
setting off a pipe bomb during the ball drop.

I wanted to go downtown to see the peach drop at midnight. Julie
talked me out of it. She wanted to stay home and bring in Y2K
with our own cocktail show. She wanted my own balls to drop.

   I got the picture!

That evening, we decided to watch My Best Friend's Wedding on
DVD. We started it around 9:00pm, guaranteeing us enough time for
our own excitement to begin before 11:59:59.
