Malachi Mac Donagh (1930-1993)
The Genesis Murders
Malachi Daedalus Mac Donagh was born one year before the dear
George Washington Memorial Bridge opened.
The Bridge, a single span roadway until 1962, when the Martha
Washington, placed underneath, opened was far ahead of the
daily plot of Malachi and the evolution of the story that
became the crisis in lives later to be known as the genesis
murders.
In 1931, the primordial Hudson estuary had finally given up
its cherry, but it took 17 years for the great unwashed as
they were termed by locals, to fly across the single span
bridge to tame the celery farms and apple orchards of Bergen
County.
Collecting in discrete but unequal pockets, they made the
landscape into a variegated, white middle class dream: own
your own small home, water your lawn, fuck your neighbor's
wife, and abuse your kids. Do all of that and you could
pretend to be the great reservoir of ordinary people who make
America great.
Gathering in these perfect enclaves, they created from
1947-1962 a leading suburban wastelands in post World War II
America.
In 1990, pregnant women began to disappear from the streets
and lives near and around the Bridge bound to New York and
Fort Lee, New Jersey.
When they appeared again, dead, of course, mutilated, their
children cut from them, and their lives used as the fodder
for the media circus that this reporter, unfortunately
continues.
Malachi Mac Donagh was one of the good men. Father to the
last victim, he died to save her. Yes he was coincidentally a
Police detective retired from that dirty but necessary work.
Yes, he was a decent man who lived his life not without
mistakes but always was responsible for his choices. Can we
ask more of any man or woman?
Laurie Fallon survived abduction and almost a year of
captivity. Abused she became for a time an abuser herself,
and some say murdered to stay alive.
Altered by the events, she spoke briefly after her rescue, to
defend the man who she now knows as father, flesh of her
flesh. All her life she thought of his as the one good step-
father as she wrote in her journals that defined her
suffering, abuse and redemption. She said of her father, "he
did what few men ever do, he lived for his ideals. He didn't
die to save my life, he stopped living to keep the truth
about his life sacred. I will always honor him."
