Hecate displays in this story a remarkably creative mind. She
writes clearly and with a certain skill.
Valentine's day in the little town of Valentine, Texas, is always a
special day, sacred to the townspeople, who mark its significance
first by closing the town to outsiders. Once assured that they are
secure, the residents spend the day decorating their town square in
preparation for the ceremony that is to begin at seven in the
evening.
Daniel Lurpercalia, who works in a shoe store, is king for the day,
and he has been anticipating this event with pleasure and a bit of
nervousness ever since his election the previous year. Since this
is a sex story, Daniel gets the full treatment, which Hecate
describes in detail, and he finds it positively delightful.
Hecate's familiarity with ancient folk customs stands her in good
stead; the climax of her story is fully in compliance with the
requirements of such a day.
A good many comma faults and a very few awkward passages mar this
well-written story slightly--I must scold Hecate and tell her to
get a good proofreader, who would have caught that sort of thing.
Stroke story fans probably will find this story wanting, but many
of the readers who like their sex wrapped in an attractive package
will find it to their liking. Hecate promises to give us some
excellent stories in the future; I look forward to them.
Since neither Hecate nor readers of ASSM are fifth-graders, I see
no reason to give this story or any other a numerical grade.
