I don't know why she started hitting me. We were arguing. Well she was arguing. Telling me that I should tell her coworker to do the design he was preparing for me the way she would have done it.

Being perennially bored, or maybe looking for an excuse to send me an email, she'd sent me a question about what he'd produced so far. Being confused by the question, or perhaps just wanting to see her, I'd walked the ten feet to her cube.

I stood in the mouth of her cube, answering the question as best I could as she sat in her desk chair, her back to the desk, curvy and substantial and slightly stocky somehow slutty and matronly and businesslike all at the same time in her tight black pants and blouse and red blazer looking up at me with the wide brown eyes and the short curly probably dyed dark red hair and the soft wide lips and the always hint of a smile, just watching me talk, watching my hips sway just a little as I talked.

When I was done she said would have done it differently and I should tell him to change it and I said I'd think about it and she said no tell him and I said maybe and she said no tell him and I said again I would think about it and she hit me.

Just like that.

Not hard or anything, more of a push than a punch, but she did hit me.

It was primal. She was primal. I'd set her off, turned her on, pushed some button. I backed off. Not too far, just around the low wall of her cube so I could continue the conversation with a little protection.

She stood. Not quite looking at me, the physical wall between us, the emotional wall still slightly cracked.

"All I meant was..." she trailed off.

"And all I said was..." I answered with equal vagueness.

The conversation apparently done, I started to walk back to my cube.

But I couldn't leave it there. Not anymore. Life is too short.

"What time are you heading out?" I asked, turning back toward her.

She smiled suddenly. "Why? You want a ride?"

"That's exactly what I want," I answered, almost winking.

"Five," she said, almost winking back. "Come get me."
