SimFolks
Synopsis
Nadine, a college student, starts working on a project studying computer-simulated psychology. Things go awry when she starts identifying a bit too strongly with one of her creations...Author's Notes
This is probably my favorite of the stories I've written, and it certainly seems to be popular with readers. It was also the most fun to write. Some stories take a lot of effort to get out, but this one pretty much wrote itself. The similarity of the SimFolks game to a certain real-world computer game is obvious, and indeed the story was inspired by The Sims , a game that allows you to create onscreen characters and watch them as they live their lives -- eating, sleeping, going to work, etc. I saw the game in a software store and thought about purchasing it, but decided not to. That was probably a good idea, since I would likely have spent all my time trying to live out my sexual fantasies with it. But at least it gave me a great idea for a story.
I changed the name because at the time I wrote the story I hadn't actually played The Sims, and didn't want to make any mistakes in describing the details of the game. Protecting myself from a lawsuit probably wasn't a bad idea, either.
