Nighthawks - My Commentary

I think many of Hopper's paintings are about loneliness. There is something very solitary about the figures in many of his paintings, and even the scenes that have no people in them seem to emphasize the emptiness of the surroundings.

Nighthawks is like that. The body language of the woman, in particular, begs for someone who is not really with anyone. She's with the man, sure, but she's not really with the man. She's all dressed up but she's lonely as hell.

So that's where the story came from. I wrote it very quickly, in just an hour or two. But it poured out very easily. Not a very happy story, though.
