Story Codes for Readers and Writers
|
If you are a reader or writer new to newsgroup, mailing list, Livejournal/blog, or net archive posting you may be wondering what all the different codes for sex stories mean. They are story codes, and their purpose is to inform you of what kind of story it is, who is in it, and what they do. I've broken them down into five categories: Gender and Age, Dominance and Consent, Acts and Elements, Genre and Style, and specialty codes for Fanfic, Anime, and Furry Stories.
Gender and Age refers to the sex of the characters and how old they are. Pretty easy. Dominance and Consent refers to the degrees of coercion, control, or force used by one character against another, either with their consent or without. Acts and Elements refers to the sex acts or fetishes contained therein. Genre and Style refers partly to content and partly to style. A story may be written as a personal experience, a mystery, a television spoof, etc. Fanfic, Furry, and Anime Fanfic writers have been using their own codes for many years to denote show and character pairing (for example, DS9, G/B for Deep Space Nine, pairing Garak and Bashir.) In recent years, however, they've adopted many of the newsgroup codes to label their stories further and warn potential readers of story elements that may squick them. They also have specialized codes of their own, which I've listed below. Some codes are seen frequently, others rarely. I've only seen muscle growth codes on gay sites, for example. Other codes, when used together, tell you exactly what you're going to get. A story coded as "femdom" and "cbt" will mean a male brutalization story of extreme torture. Not every story will contain a code from every category, nor does every story need to. It's up to the author to decide how thoroughly they want to code, as codes take up space in header title lines that could be given to the author's name or rev version. At the very least, however, the story should contain gender and consent codes, along with the code for the predominate act.

| |
M, m, b* | Males |
b | A young boy |
F, f, g* | Females (I've never seen the g used as a code) |
f | A young girl or female teenager |
teen | Teenagers |
teen1 | Young teenagers 13-15 |
teen2 | Teenagers 16-19 |
preteen | Ages 12 and below |
ped | Children ages 12 and below |
minor | Any child under the age of consent |
M/F | Adult heterosexual sex* |
F/F | Adult lesbian sex |
M/M | Adult gay sex |
M+F, MMF * | Several men and one woman |
MF+, MFF * | One man and several women |
M+/F, MMMM/F | A gangbang, the female as the recipient |
MMMM+ | A gay orgy |
M/f ** | An older man and a younger female. |
F/m ** | An older woman and a younger man. |
F/f ** | An older woman and a teenage girl. |
M/b ** | An older man and a male teenager or child. |
bi | A bisexual person. or a story featuring bisexuality. |
herm | A hermaphrodite. |
trans | A transgendered or cross-dressing person, or a story featuring transexuality. |
twink | A slim, effeminate young man. Used almost exclusively in gay fiction. |
** If the story contains bondage elements the capitol letter may indicate a dominant, the lower case letter a sub. |
The media acronyms are shortened versions of the series, book, game, or movies's name (e.g. Buffy for Buffy the Vampie Slayer, HL for Highlander, etc.). I can't list them all here, but often archive sites will have a helpful key for terms that you can use.
Pairing codes are always delineating with a slash (/) in the middle between the characters' names. This is the origin of the term 'slash.' Often the pairings are listed in a shorthand consisting of the first or first and second letters of their names, making them indecipherable to the beginning reader. Again, an archive may offer useful information.
Rating is based on the movie system: G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17. This applies to language, sex, and violence. G stories are suitable for all ages, while NC-17 stories may contain extreme violence or the raunchiest, kinkiest slash. In addition to these codes, others may appear from the list below or the ones above.
Furry stories use the movie rating system too, along with the species featured (cheetah, skunk, etc.) Other codes may appear as well.
It is always good netiquette to use codes. Most posters put them in parentheses at the end of the header: (M/f, cons BDSM, anal)
There are several other important posting codes that you should know.
"RP" or "rep" means a repost. It may be placed in front of the story with a colon, like so:
RP: School for Slut Slaves (M/f, D/s, humor)
"REV" or "rev" is a revision. This is a story which has been changed by the author. It is usually placed at the end of the title:
School for Slut Slaves, rev. 2 (M/f, D/s, humor)
The name of the newsgroup, or the word "story" set off by asterisks or parentheses at the beginning of a post, almost always means that it is a real story, rather than spam. It's not necessary to use this in moderated newsgroups.
(ASS) School for Slut Slaves (M/f, D/S, humor)
If the story is new (that is, it has never been posted anywhere on the net before) some authors announce it before the title:
NEW! School for Slut Slaves (M/f, D/S, humor)
Sometimes a story is posted in several parts, or it is a novel-length work with many chapters. In such cases, the chapter number and the total number of chapters are shown like this:
School for Slut Slaves, 1/16 (M/f, D/S, humor)
If the author hasn't finished writing the work, the chapters may be posted like this:
School for Slut Slaves, 1/? (M/f, D/S, humor)
Lastly, some authors put their names in posts:
School for Slut Slaves, by Mistress Oh! (M/f, D/S, humor)
That's all you need to know. I will be updating this list periodically to keep it up to date. Happy reading and posting.
