ESSAY: How to Write Sex Stories [A]

A self-explanatory essay that probably everyone who posts fiction here should read. These excellent rules can also be applied to writing non- erotic fiction.
I would like to point out, though, that as one of the functions of a sex stories is to get the reader sexually excited to some extent, there are other story structures besides the traditional linear one Smith describes that accomplish this...as erotica does, by its nature, have a physical action to accomplish in the reader rather than a purely mental one. As the author points out (and as I have too) erotica is a form of fantasy. It's therefore wide open for literary experimentation in a way that conventional literature is not. (Check out "The Best American Erotica" series, edited by Susie Bright and published by Charles Scribner's Sons, for some very unusual stuff.)

This scifi/thriller/sex story was about (in the author's words) "a brilliant young scientist who dares to cross his mentor, with life- changing consequences." Unfortunately, I only found parts 3 and 4 of this tale, and the end of part 4 was cut off, but what was there was intriguing.
Apparantly, what has happened is Dr. Fritsch, a scientist with a fetish for captive lesbian slavegirls/sisters, has somehow transformed his male protege Ben Stein into one of those slavegirls, and in the course of these chapters he does the same to Amanda Crossways, Dr. Stein's girlfriend who has come asking after his disappearance. The two new slaves are renamed Sissy and Prissy and are chastity-belted, mind- controlled, and forced to service each other for Dr. Fritsch's pleasure. It's hinted that Dr. Fritsch, in typical mad doctor style, would like to inflict this treatment on the rest of the world's inhabitants.
It's always sexually stimulating to read about independent, intelligent people transformed into randy sex slaves who willingly participate in all sort of demeaning activities, and what makes it even more fun is when a small part of their minds is left free enough to be aghast at what they're doing, but unable to wrest physical control of their bodies back. It's even funner when their scientific knowledge is plundered in the process by their master, again without their consent, and used by him to make more slavegirls. There's something very wet and perverted about this. Science fiction writer Jack Chalker has some form of this sex slavery ocurring at least once in every one of his books. In one the inhabitants of an entire planetoid were assimilated this way, proving that the line between publishable SF and posted SF like Marlissa's is a very thin one indeed.
I did notice that last March Marlissa posted another tale, "The Whip Must Win" that treated the captive slavegirl/sisters theme in a higher style, giving it, to my mind, the definitive treatment. But what I saw of "Wetware" was very nice too.

Mr. Spraycan has been very busy lately, posting, in a month's time, the eight-part "Seduction" series, a story about Mother's Day, a repost of the hilarious Jeeves and Wooster spoof, and quite a few other stories, of which this is one.
When I first read the title I thought it was another spoof, a parody of the recent sobfest movie "The English Patient" but it is much better. A German dominatrix (Countess Maria-Theresa Hannelore Wittgenstein-- whew!) who is a foreign bank executive residing in London has a fling with a polite English fellow who's into being a sub. Over the course of the bank holidays at the end of the year they have all sorts of kinky scenes together which includes bondage and forced masturbation (his) to which the Countesses's nanny and some of her friends are invited. The English background added a lot to the story--I really could see a polite, rather befuddled English man ending up in a situation like this. Authentic and REAL. The story ends on an oddly wistful but satisfying note, but I'm not going to spoil it for you.
The story also answers the question of why some English men are called "wankers." I personally think the habit is kind of sweet.

What is a C Moon? Picture the shape of the C and the shape of the crescent moon facing each other, as in this C). Now picture an L7. What is an L7? A square. Therefore, a C Moon is pretty cool.
Hot but sensual BDSM erotica as a master, Adam, pleasures his female slave nicely, then goes to another room where her husband submits to him dressed in a maid's costume. His mastery of the couple is complete.
Michael Smith might criticize this story for not being more fully developed. As literature, it was incomplete. The writing could have used more elegance--for example, the phrase "The muscle-bound hunk, meanwhile, had entered the next room" was very jarring and turned the supposedly masterful dom into a cartoon. But I liked the sex here, so to my mind things were balanced out enough for an B+. This author has posted more than one story recently, so if you're interested, check out all of them.
This story reconfirms what every ASS reader knows: Subs have all the fun. They also reconfirm the perfection of fantasy vs. the messiness of real life. In real life, when sex similar to this is attempted, all sorts of things happen--one participant's front tooth bangs into the other's forehead, tied hands fall asleep from being laid on, the participants are of differing heights to accomodate oral sex while one stands and the other (hog-tied) kneels, ropes loosen, and one orgasms so prolifically they are propelled off the futon and across the carpet. All this really happened to me one night.
Explanation about the rating system: My rating system is different than
Celeste's. I use a straight grade, A+ to D-, sometimes splitting it. What I
give high marks to are, in no particular order of importance:
originality, creativity, skillful use of the English language, and
technical things like grammar and spelling. A poorly written dog may
get a A+ because of its originality of conception, while a well-written
chestnut like wife swapping can get a C simply because it's been done
before. (Of course, my personal tastes figure in also, though I try to be
fair.)
Below the rating is when the story appeared. I realize that stories may appear on different servers at different times, but hopefully the date will give a rough idea of where to look. Below the date is where the story appeared (ASS = alt.sex.stories; ASSM = alt.sex.stories.moderated; ASSG = alt.sex.stories.gay; ASSB = alt.sex.stories.bondage.) More superhero stories have been posted lately, including five by Ann Douglas about Supergirl, and these two about the adventures of Batgirl. Why is this variant of erotic fanfic so popular? Well, superheroes are larger than life, emotionally and physically; so it stands to reason they would have super sex as well. I've found that each hero or heroine occupies a distinct niche on the sexual spectrum. Superman and Supergirl deal with the effects of sexual isolation; the Incredible Hulk with sheer animalism; Spiderman with the issues of youth (as Peter Parker was originally a college student when bitten.) But, as EVERYONE knows, Batman and Batgirl are about fetish. Their rubber and latex body-molding unitards, leather boots and gloves, various Bat-gizmos, life-threatening B/D predicaments, and dungeon-like hideouts make them pure, unadulterated kink. We can happily blame this image on the late 1960s TV show with Adam West, Burt Ward, and Yvonne Craig (with Julie Newmar as Catwoman--meow!) as the comics weren't quite so campy. The recent series of Batman movies is upholding the tradition, with Val Kilmer sporting a thonged butt and codpiece in the last one, as well as molded rubber Bat-nipples on the sculpted pectorals of his Batsuit...a far cry from Adam Wests' dull nylon unitard. (Didja know his stunt double had to wear a girdle because of his beer belly? Didja know Burt Ward's cock had to be taped down sometimes under his batshorts because he kept getting unwanted erections?)
Anyway, these stories have been inspired by the TV show and not the movie. "Perils" is a series of cliffhangers, each installment ending with a breathless recap: "WILL CATWOMAN DROWN BATGIRL IN THE HIDEOUS BONDAGE ADHESIVE? WHAT A STICKY SITUATION!" The story line too is very similar to the show, with the visit to Commisoner Gordon, the finding of a clue, the ambush by the villain, the first bondage peril, the finding of another clue, the second ambush and peril, etc. It's loads of fun. This Batgirl is more sensual than Yvonne Craig's, and Catwoman and her henchgirls are sexier too, tying each other up to keep in practice for their main job of being a foe to Our Heroes. They do the same to Batgirl, but also inflict very yummy tortures on her, all of which have to do with being tightly wrapped, immersed, or suspended in substances that give incredible orgasms as they electrocute or slowly strangle you. The file I had ends without the last sticky predicament being solved, so I guess there's a Part 3 out there somewhere.
"Batgirl vs. the Crime School for Girls" is more sarcastic; it opens by saying Batman and Robin have been emasculated by King Tut to become eunuchs, Batman escaping in time to reattach his member, but abandoning Robin to be a castrati. It's hilarious for this reason alone. The rest of the story follows the general outline of the "Londinium" TV episodes where Batgirl attempts to foil Lady Penelope Peasop and her coeds of crime, save there's lesbian sex. It was broader than the other and rounded out the heroine more, and had a sly, satirical sense of humor I really liked. And it gives the perfect explanation for why none of the kinky villains ever ripped off Batman's or Batgirl's mask as they were tied up to see who they really were.
Mr. or Ms. Sneakly (Yes I get this Hanna Barbera pop-cult reference) you're writing very finely tuned humor pieces. Have you thought of publishing professionally?

The Wizard of Oz has been done, so has Disney. It was only a matter of time before someone got around to Narnia. As the Narnia titles were, and are, some of my favorite all time books, I was very eager to read this and see how they'd been perverted. I shouldn't have bothered.
Now, I don't like to be mean and discouraging, especially as the author politely requested "Tell me how i can improve them or tell me how i'm doing" but I found this poorly written, choppy, laughable, and worst of all, not the least bit erotic or sexy. Suggestions? A. Pay attention to creative writing and English composition classes in school. B. Buy a book on how to write. C. Take a look at some of the other authors' work on the sex newsgroups and learn from the efforts of your betters. You were onto something original here; you just have to cultivate the skill to do it justice.
As for specific suggestions, here's a good rule to start out with: When writing about sexual organs/functions/discharges, it's always wise to stick to no more than three or less different apellations. More than that becomes an inadvertant laugh-fest. For example, I found "virgin hole" "pussy petals" "tiny quim" "massacred cunt " "spasming cunny" "iron- like cervix" "womb band " "straining uterine wall" in just two paragraphs. Just "cunt" or "pussy" would have been enough.

Yes, this is the infamous Spice Girls story everyone's been asking a repost on. All three episodes.
The Spice Girls are a female vocal group in the manner of Vanity Six, but without the wise (?) tutelage of Prince, or rather The Artist, as he's known now. Like Prince's proteges, they usually pose in bikinis or underwear, displaying their boobs, buns and nay-nays for male or lesbian delight, touting a feminist party line that is at odds with their nature. This would tolerable if only they had some of Madonna's up- yours insouciance, Jarboe's cool, or even PJ Harvey's knowing knockoff of sex-symbol stereotypes, but they don't. They're the creamiest and blandest of cheesecake.
The stories are written as first-person memoirs by each Spice Girl (though they come across as interchangeable) detailing the orgies, gang-bangs, fucking and sucking that happens when a famous pop group goes on tour. These stories are very slutty in a manner similar to Suzy Sleaze's (whom I reviewed The Annex Reviews 5/21/97) where cunt juice and sperm flies everywhere in Waring blender style. (Sample of dialogue: "Oh shit....I'm gonna tank up your cunt full of cum!.....let me take it out, please! I wanna see it cum on you!") However, these stories have none of Suzie Sleaze's wit, humor or dumb-blonde trashiness. So the C, for lack of flair, taste, restraint, and style, which is really saying a lot for sex fiction of this nature. To be fair, those who do like mindless, fluid-oriented sex narrated by dumb pin-up cunts should like this, but I didn't, and in fact felt insulted by it.
I believe one of the earmarks of good porn is that it should arouse whoever reads it regardless of their gender or sexual preference. But this was so aligned towards a male viewpoint--and I'll guess was written by a male in an attempt to get inside the head of a "hot" female--I can't see how any female, straight or gay, could like it or be turned on by it, even though it's narrated by a "she." If I'm wrong, you can feed my Spice Girls CDs to an angry pit bull.

These two shorts were bundled together in a single post. The first read a bit like over-embellished, out-of-breath "arty" erotica, competently written, but not much more than a snippet. The second was very different, musings in the mind of an unnamed man as he drives home from an orgy in a cloud of disgust and self-hatred. Not exactly a story to turn you on sexually, but as a story about sex and sexual reactions it was very. very good, and with some more work and polish, could be published professionally. Suggestion to the author: The first didn't entirely work, the second did; I'd like to see more.
GOLLY GOSH, BATMAN! LADY CYRRH...WHO IS SHE?
Who am I? Well, the Cyrrh can refer either to stripper Lili St Cyr...or, pronouncing it as it's written, as "Sir." Lady Sir. Get it? It's always fun to leave your gender just the tiniest bit ambiguous.
Speaking of those who enjoy reading about the Dynamic Duo, about a month or so back another tongue-in-whatever Batman story appeared...about the rape of Robin! Poor Robin gets absolutely no respect, though Chris O'Donnel's portrayal in "Batman Forever" was what made the movie worth seeing, IMO. "The Rape of Robin" has been getting numerous requests for reposts and completion (the author only got up to part 3) but it hasn't reappeared yet. If the author is reading this, I promise to write a review when I see the completed version.
Speaking of Batman, I can't wait to see what George Clooney does with the role. I thought Michael Keaton's Batman was too uptight--he acted like he had a stick shoved up his ass all the time--while Val Kilmer's was wooden, with the facial mien of a contemplative orangutan. Perhaps Mr. Clooney will inspire some more stories, about Batman himself this time?

The narrator of "Snow" gets stuck in a rapidly worsening snowstorm and pulls off the highway. He gets something to eat in a nearby restaurant and is attracted to the young waiter who serves him, whom he later meets and fucks in an adult video store courtesy of a glory hole, and after that they rent a motel room together and have lusty yet playful sex. In "Warrior" the same guy (?), seduces a fellow Marine in a battleship shower, with rather raunchier sex (come on, they're Marines.)
Not much character development or plot in these besides the sex, but both were well written except for a case of "let's see how many synonyms we can find for penis." (There were a lot.) A few of the sexual descriptions were truly stunning--directness without literary pretension. It's always refreshing to read about hot sex where the participants have a good time and aren't exploiting, hurting, or demeaning each other.
Why do mostly-straight women like to read about gay male sex? For the same reasons mostly-straight men like to read about lesbian sex.

This story was well written and literate; for some strange reason, though, I kept picturing the girls as Southern semi-redneck chicks who were the first in their families to get a college degree. The narrator has turned in her son for vandalism and watched him pay for it, but after accusing a politician of sexual harassment, she finds herself up for the same punishment.

Walter Mitty is a fictional character and the star of a series of stories written in the 30s or 40s in which he uses the power of fantasy to cope with the problems of everyday life. The stories had a gentle, dreaming tone to them which this author has successfully copied.
The narrator fantasizes he is the King of Spain and that his wife is Serrafina, Queen of the Gypsies. An old college roommate of his wife comes to visit, whom he secretly names Isabella. As it is a given on ASS that old female college roomates have had/would have wanted to have wild lesbian sex together, the couple wind up in a three-way. ("The old college roomate" plotline works the other way you know...my ex- boyfriend cheerfully admitted "jerking off" and "giving head to" his old college roomate. His excuse was, "Well, you're just so oversexed at that age.") In the few months I've been scanning ASS, this was the best written one I've seen. Tasteful, yet hardcore in parts. And the naming of sex organs and fluids is consistent! Five stars right there. I am not married, but I believe this one would be very good to share with a husband or wife as an introduction to sharing fantasies AND written erotica.
Anyway, "The King of Spain" was an excellently written offering, and we will be well entertained if more adventures of these characters are posted in the future.

This story made me feel horny and sad at the same time. Which is no mean feat from the author.
Some of the stories on ASS (and its sisters ASSG and ASSB) are personal fantasies; others are generic fantasies (lucky man examines/fucks/spanks a squad of nymphet cheerleaders). Some are stories simply intended to amuse. But a few, a very few, qualify as sex literature--that is, a serious examination of sex and the nature of sexuality that also happens to get you hot.
This story was one of the latter, an excellent read about a strange episode in the early sexual experiences of a teenage girl. She and her older boyfriend go to the park to have sex, and as they go at it they are approached by a lonely old homeless man. On fire with her recent discoveries, the girl permits him to have sex with her as well, and he treats her like a goddess.
I know it sounds unbelievable in summarization, but the author was very skillful in making the act a personal choice of the young narrator, not a titillation-device for salivating readers hoping to see a dirty old man getting his way with a young girl. So, if you like good writing and you like good sex, go for this one.

The Barbie Twins meet Star Trek.
The last I saw of the Barbie Twins was on an episode of "Real Personal" where they discussed their bulimia, so it was a surprise to me to find them on the starship "Enterceptor" with Captain Smirk and Mr. Cocksure. The pert blonde bimbos, wearing Star Fleet regulation thong panties, bras, garter belts, and high heels, serve only one day of officership before they are kidnapped by an alien race, tied to steel racks, and made to indulge in endless computer-based sex as part of research project headed by the males of that race.
Some stories are crafted by many days of hunched sweat and toil; some are plugged out in an hour or two to get the reader, and the writer, hot as quickly as possible. Such was probably the case with this one. The writing here was...well, extremely amateurish, so the C+...but the author gets an A for imagination and silly enthusiasm.
I well remember the summer my friend Eric and I wasted the State of New Jersey's money by coming up with imaginative perversions of comic book heroes and TV shows in our boring office jobs. For our version of Star Trek, it was Captain Jerkoff and Mr. Crotch, with the starship "Second Prize" whose mission was "To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new drinks and new forms of stimulation...to boldly have a one night stand in TWO NIGHTS!" This was HILARIOUS. The narrator describes his storyboard for a gay porno flick in a rapid-fire patter born of scuzzy Hollywood dives where third- and fourth-rate producers and directors gather to talk shop. Hip, cool, and slick, with a jangly edge of parody. Yet the affection for gay porno flicks is there. It's a shame most straights on ASS wouldn't be wide-minded enough to appreciate this.
Mr. Trell, get thee to a legitimate publisher. And post these stories where they'll be read more widely.
Note to Readers: One of the things I would like to do over the next few

they mean, as WW Mitty was kind enough to do in some mail sent to me

Cyrrh also has Greek overtones, as in Myrrh, Smyrna, and Pyrrhus. Am
I a woman...or a man? Another correspondent suggested the Cyrrh may

For those who don't already know, "fur" is a subgenre of sex story that deals with sexual intercourse with hairy, animal-like humanoids. The creatures are sometimes supernatural, as with werewolves, or alien, such as the relatives of the Kzin and Titanides that populate Elf Sternberg's stories. Sometimes they are just very hairy humans, and sometimes hairy animals with human intelligence. Fur stories appear to be an exclusively gay or male bi phenomenon. I haven't come across any female equivalents yet--that is, written by females, or with female protagonists. Of course, one can say the many doing-it-with-Rover stories are the female equivalent, but I'm not sure they mean the same thing. Personally I think things are more stimulating when the other partner can talk, so fur stories are a good compromise between animal and human sex.
This story follows typical fantasy formula in that a young lad is sent off to save his village from evil raiders by asking the help of a powerful wizard. He meets a talking deer, a minotaur, and a were-dragon, and, being a virgin, he asks them to teach him about sex. After some hot and then tense moments, the wizard agrees to help his village on the basis of his honest and generous nature.
If all the gay sex were taken out, this story could have easily sat on the Borders bookshelves next to Piers Anthony and David Eddings. I admit the combination of fantasy, humor, and explicit sex was strange, but ultimately it worked well and was a good addition of its genre. So if you like fantasy and flying fur, you will like this.

But for some odd reason, the man telling it to the woman didn't even have the imagination to fill in her physical responses (such as "You become very excited as your pussy grows hotter and wetter") and instead concentrated on his own, which leads me to believe the point of this was to get himself off, not his unseen lady-love.
After the sex act he will "convulse a couple of more times before collapsing on top of you" hopefully leaving a "stain the size of a family size pepperoni pizza." How erotic! Hopefully, it wasn't from the effects of the victim's buttplug being pulled out. He then asks female readers to go to a certain web site and fill out a questionaire about their dating preferences. Huh-uh. I don't think so.
Bad writing, bad grammar, bad attitude. Avoid this, and probably any other numbered fantasies you come across. Chanel #5 they ain't.

For some reason object-fetish stories--such as rubber, shoes, or, in this case, silky panties--are less well written than those of other subgenres. This was the case here. It also needs a good pruning, like with the pair of two-foot electrical lineman's cutters I use to work in my garden.
A horny businesswoman jerks off in a boring meeting, than stops at the lingerie shop on her way home to buy a pair of panties to please her husband. Inexplicably, the shopgirl jerks her off in turn. Even more inexplicably, neither bisexuality or lesbianism gets a mention.
Some slightly hot action for those who like lingerie and F/F stories; if you're not like-minded, don't bother.

As some other reviewers have given high marks to this story, I thought I'd read it and review it myself.
As a piece of literature, it was well written, and certainly followed all the good advice you'd soak up in a typical writing college class. The emphasis was on romance--or rather a romantic situation--rather than sex, and the author states he or she wasn't trying any differently: "this is your 'vanilla' type of male/female sex/love story here. This is NOT a story about a nympho teenage cheerleader naked skydiver having midair sex with her coach before landing in a cucumber patch guarded by a horny St. Bernard."
This is the plot: In 1972 a high school senior "takes care of" his best friend's sexy girlfriend while the friend is away for the summer. The girl's brother goes MIA in Nam, and through comforting her the pair grow close. They attempt to have sex but their morals stop them. Girl eventually marries original boyfriend, but twenty years later he dies, and she marries the narrator. They have a son they name after the dead guy and encourage him to play football like his namesake did. Nice, but I couldn't shake the feeling it was the sort of thing you'd find in a porno magazine for Mormons. Or sponsored by the Lutheran Church Family Council. (I don't have anything against Mormons or Lutherans, but I have to admit they are kind of straight.)
Tension and conflict are two vital ingredients every piece of good fiction has, and in sex stories this means when, where, and how the characters fuck. If the acts are naughty ones we wouldn't do ourselves, the tension, and interest, level jumps. But if the story is fairly "vanilla," as this author put it, this built-in sexual tension drops and the author has to work twice as hard to regain it with sheer writing genius, realism, or wildly original variations on the theme. Well, the author wasn't John Cheever or Joyce Carol Oates; we have competency, but not brilliance. Judging it against the usual run of stuff on ASS I would have given it an A, but the cloying sentimentality knocked points off for me. Plus the fact that in a romance (which is what I call this, not erotica, because relationships were the focus) one wouldn't think of the love object's "asscheeks" or "perky tits." They'd be buttocks and breasts. Romance follows certain conventions of its own.
More importantly, if one wants to read romances, even those with explicit sex, all one has to do is go to a bookstore or library. It's the gay minotaurs and were-dragons, BDSM butt-pluggers, and lesbian panty- sniffers that proliferate the most in ASS, as these stories can't be found anywhere else.
