Victoriana
Bernard Graves ushered the footman into the room after brushing the dust off his shoulders, and reminding him of his manners. The Doctor and his wife were sitting in armchairs while Eliza served tea.
"Ah, Graves. About time."
"Sorry Ma'am. Jones was busy with the horses. I've arranged for someone else to assist, and brought him straight up."
"I think, Graves, that I can tell where he was, just from the odour. Jones, the lady of the house doesn't wish to be reminded of the activities in the stables, thank you kindly. I'd prefer you to wash before proceeding upstairs next time."
"Yes, Sir. Sorry, Sir. Mr Graves told me there was some urgency."
"Graves, do I need to discuss this?"
"No, no Sir. I will take care of it. You have an errand?"
"Errand, Graves?"
"Sir. You asked me to bring a footman. You had an urgent message?"
"Oh, yes. Damn it, Eliza, do you have to stand in the way? Graves, this is important. Can it be left with smelly Jones?"
"Certainly Sir. Jones, take the message. Doctor, he's reliable. I'll make certain."
"Fine, Graves. Don't let me down. Eliza, that's enough fussing." The maid curtsied and took a few steps back before standing silent, as was her place.
The Doctor continued. "Jones, please deliver this to the Admiral. He'll be expecting someone. Wait for a reply."
"Certainly, Sir."
"And try to wash that smell off, first."
"Sorry, Sir."
"Go, go. Graves, could I have a quiet word?"
The butler bent his head close to the Doctor's, and listened, nodding from time to time, but saying nothing. Eventually he stood straight again, his face a blank mask. The Doctor continued in a normal voice. "You understand, Graves?"
"Yes, Sir, I do. You are sure?"
"I told you, did I not?"
"Indeed. My apologies."
"No need. Just make it so."
"Sir."
"Ollie, what are the two of you talking about?"
"Man business, dear. Mind not. More tea?"
"No, Ollie. I've had quite enough. Eliza, take these..."
"No, no. Let her leave them here. Graves, take the girl with you, will you?"
"Sir. Thank you Sir. Ma'am. Come, Eliza."
"Thank you, Graves. Please report back later."
"Sir."
The second door closed between the drawing room and the servants, and Bernard stopped the maid at the top of the back stairs. "Lizzie, what were you doing in there?"
"What do you mean, Sir?"
"We are alone. Call me Bernie."
"Bernie then. I still don't understand."
"The Doctor asked me to pass on a message." Eliza's eyebrows lifted at this, but she said nothing. "He told me something I never guessed."
"That is the way that he wanted it, Bernie. He didn't want anyone to know."
"He does now."
"What is the message?"
"Lizzie, he said that you were flirting with him."
"Nonsense. He knows what flirting is. I was merely being polite."
"He said... that you were rubbing your body against him."
"He would."
"And that your... I must be blunt."
"Please do, Bernie. I'm not easily embarrassed."
"I'm noticing that for the first time." Graves had his hands on her shoulders, holding her against the wall, and looked down from her face to the cleavage plainly on display. "The Doctor felt you were showing an unseemly amount of... he said breast."
"Just the one?"
"You think impertinence will help now?"
"How, Mr Graves, could it not?"
"He suggested, in addition, that your... garments were not sufficient to ensure you remain decent, even pouring tea."
"I assumed that must be the case, Bernie. He twitched."
"Twitched?"
Eliza pointed to his trousers. "Like that."
"Would you like the rest of the message, Lizzie?"
"Indeed I would, Bernard. Do you think you can manage to tell me?"
"He said... He said that you and he had been having an affair."
"Did he just?"
"And that it had been going on for some time. Four months."
"No."
"No?"
"No, Bernie. Five."
"Oh?"
"You are shocked?"
"Only in that I knew nothing. He also... well, he asked me to tell you something."
"Well then, Bernie, tell."
"He said that he would not be able to..."
"Yes?"
"Well... see you. For some time."
"Damn."
"I see. Lizzie, that wasn't all."
"Oh?"
"He also... he said I should ask you for proof of something."
"He did, did he?"
"Yes. The Doctor said... Lizzie, could you... Would you lift your skirts?"
"Lift them? You want to look at my legs?"
"Not exactly."
"Oh, I know now. You should just ask."
"I was afraid I might offend."
"No chance. Is this the question?" Lizzie lifted her skirts, little by little, up past her knees, and slowly further, until she stood with a grin on her face, and her skirts gathered around her hips. A dark triangle of curly hair was visible between her thighs. She wasn't embarrassed in the slightest.
Graves stood with his mouth open, as the lamp shook in his hand. "Yes, Lizzie. That answers the question. Good God, girl, why do you not wear your drawers?"
"He asked me not to. He said that he would sometimes not have a lot of time, and would like me to be ready."
"And..."
"Oh yes, Bernie. I'm always ready for him."
"I see. Lizzie, if you ask me to, I'll lie to him. But he said that I should... take care of you."
"You want to take me downstairs and give me some dinner in the kitchen? A little soup and a stern fatherly talk?" The twinkle in her eyes gave her away, despite the straight face.
"That did not seem to be what the Doctor intended, Lizzie."
"I should hope not."
"And... should I lie for you?"
"Not for me, Mr Graves. For yourself, if you wish."
"No, Lizzie. Not for me. What then, should I do?"
"Put the lamp down."
"Oh?"
"And kiss me."
Graves hurriedly dropped the lamp at the top of the stairs, and returned his attention to the maid. "Here, Lizzie?"
"No, silly. On my mouth."
"No, but should we go..."
"No one is likely to capture us here."
"They are not?"
"No one has before."
"I... Oh."
"Stop talking."
Their mouths met then, and as lips parted, tongues twined with each other. Without breaking contact with the butler's mouth, Eliza took his hands, one by one, and placed them where hers had been, on the skin of her hips.
Bernard lost the last of his hesitation at that point, and his hands slid back to cup the maid's buttocks, lifting her slightly as he leaned in closer.
Removing his lips from hers for a moment, he noticed that her height was such that with a little effort he could kiss the visible tops of her breasts. As soon as Lizzie realised where his attention was focused, she loosened things quickly, so that, indeed, her breasts were unable to be contained by her clothing.
Bernard lifted her against the wall a little more energetically, and paid close attention to her pale breasts as their bodies rubbed carelessly together. His mouth lapped and nibbled on her large dark nipples. Lizzie again found her hands were free, and expertly dealt with the problem of Bernard's trapped organ, flicking his fly buttons open one by one, and withdrawing the length of it gently from its prison.
"Bernie dear, this seems to have done much more than just twitch."
"I hope you plan to take responsibility for that."
"I plan to fix it."
"That's what I wanted to hear. You'd best stop that though, or it might be fixed a little soon."
"Can't have that. Listen, do you think you have the strength...?"
"Of course I do. I'm a healthy..."
"No, the strength to lift me."
"Oh. Here?"
"Please."
"We should manage. Now lift your... Yes, and wrap them around. Lizzie, are you some sort of strumpet?"
"How dare you. I'm a good girl."
"The evidence is compounding against you."
"I want you pounding against me."
"Should I need to..."
"Oh, just say it!"
"... pull out?"
"Oh. No, no. It's... you want the details?"
"No. Just the answer."
"No, Bernie. No need."
"Thank you. Now just lift a little..."
"Bernie, I didn't think you..."
"What?"
"Liked girls."
"Why ever not?"
"Well, the Doctor's not the only one I flirted with."
"Oh."
"And you. Oh, God, Bernie, that's very nice. Just... yes, just like that."
"And I what?"
"Oh. You never took a blind bit of notice."
"I have my standards."
"As do I."
"Yes. I don't, generally, take these sorts of risks."
"I see. I hope you don't regret... Ooh... regret this. Oooh."
"No, Lizzie. Not in the slightest. Now be quiet."
"Yes, Sir."
"And push."
"I am!"
The two servants, the most senior in the house, and one of the most junior, dimly lit by the lamp at the top of the steep back stairs, moved into a rhythm that worked for them both, and by the time Bernard was ready, Lizzie had been worked into a near-delirious state. They both climaxed with an urgency that was quite out of keeping with the conversation, and Bernard stood the maid gently on the floor before kissing her gently again on the mouth.
They stood there, panting and wet, half dressed and thoroughly relieved, until the lamp flickered, brightened momentarily, and went out. Alone in the dark, they both started to laugh quietly, not stopping until the butler spoke again.
"Lizzie, I didn't pass on all of the message."
"I see. Do you feel able, now?"
"The Doctor did not say 'for a while'. He said that he would not be able to see you again, and that you should stop teasing him."
"He's..."
"Sorry, Lizzie."
"Bernie, it was never going to be forever. I knew that."
"I'm still sorry. You're not... well, he has done this before."
"Oh?"
"Yes. Oh, not the... he hasn't asked me to assist. Not like this."
"I see. I'm not as upset as you might expect, Bernie."
"You are not?"
"No. It was about the game. The challenge. He thought I could not keep it quiet."
"He was wrong."
"He was. Kiss me again."
"Are you alright, Lizzie?"
"I'm not sure. Maybe there is something I need to do."
Bernard released her, but stood close, knowing how near the stairs they were. "What is that?"
"I think... possibly I need to see someone."
"Oh?"
"Yes. Maybe... if I could..."
"Yes?"
"See the butler? Regularly?"
"Oh. I can probably arrange that."
"But do you want to, or are you following instructions?"
"I want to."
"You are sure?"
"I'm sure."
"Kiss me, butler. I need to be consoled."
