Evidence of Betrayal

It was too early in the season and too early in the day to be getting naked outdoors, but she had little time and even less opportunity. It had been a two-hour drive to get there. She'd had to get up in darkness at 3:30.

She stepped gingerly on sharp beach stones as she set up the camera on its tripod. A light dawn breeze, faintly damp, feathered her skin and sent goose bumps rushing up her arms and down her chest, and her nipples hardened impersonally. Idiot, she told herself. She should have done this bit while clothed.

She checked the sunlight advancing across the waves. Maybe five more minutes. It was all she could afford. People would be up and about soon, walking dogs, casting into the turbulence with long fishing rods.

She clicked the timer switch on the camera and stepped briskly to the marked position in the sand. She smiled radiantly, laughed, crossed her arms over her breasts and then her groin, threw her arms wide in answer to a plea from an unseen photographer. The camera clicked and whirred, taking shots automatically.

When the film was full she dressed hastily, dismantled the equipment, and stored it in the boot of her car. She drove away.

"Bastard!" she muttered, lips tight.

She chuckled grimly, imagining his face when he found the carelessly-hidden photos. What? When? Who? He would be flabbergasted.

It was okay they were splitting up. It was time. But it didn't have to be so easy or comfortable for him. She just couldn't stand being taken for granted.
