I Object

"I Object!", the young lawyer exclaimed as the defendant started answering a question that would be devastating to her case.

"Sustained. Keep to the facts Mr. James," the old judge responded. I saw the lawyer hide a smile at his response. She knew the question would be asked and needed her objection to be sustained, otherwise her case was almost certainly lost.

Both lawyers knew that the case was most likely over now. It was a typical divorce case. The young lawyer was very good at what she did. I knew this because she almost ruined my life two years ago. She was my former wives lawyer and managed to get most of what I earned. That was soon to change, but I wanted to watch the lawyer's final performance.

"A five minute recess?" the opposing lawyer requested turning to his client with the bad news. I almost laughed as it was virtually the same scene as what happened during my case.

"Very well. Five minutes." The judge replied.

I arranged to sit very close to her table. Her strawberry blonde hair and piercing blue eyes made her look more like a teenybopper, but her attractive professional suit made her position all too apparent. I knew her to be an extremely driven successful lawyer who was in line for a great career in law. That was about to change hopefully.

"At the lunch break, meet me at the cafeteria," I told the lawyer. She turned to me with a surprised look and nodded her ascent. She squinted a bit, trying to remember who I was.

"Sure, I'll see you at 11:30, okay?" she replied smiling.

She looked at me for a few moments, wondering what just happened. She then turned to her client and stop to her about their success.
