A Letter to My Wife

My Dearest Angel,

It was one year ago today you left me. Yesterday I had expected to face the day with somber yet hopeful courage. Instead I found myself once more devastated, reliving the agony. Lost but not alone. Sally held me as I cried, the sobs racking my body, her soft whispered words easing the pain. I knew she understood the anguish that I felt at your leaving, even though she has been sharing my bed for almost six months. One bright spot was that Sally was never jealous of the love I still have for you.

In fact it was Sally that recommended that I write this letter. A way to make peace and accept the fact that you are truly gone. I know in my heart that the decision to leave was not yours, yet it still hurts to know that I never did say goodbye. The last time I saw you I was already making plans in the back of my head to join you.

Last Saturday morning on the bluff where we met, you and I. Sally and I as well, I asked her to marry me. Through tears of joy and sorrow she said yes. I hope and pray that you can accept this. I know that our time together was short, God willing my time with Sally will be long and fruitful.

Please don't think that I love you any less than I did the day we were married. I've found that my life needs to be lived and even if you cannot be in it I must still live it.

I will love you forever.

Tears flowed down my cheeks as I finished reading the letter to Angelina. The sun came out as I finished, bathing me in it's warm light. I rolled the letter into a tube and secured it with my wedding ring then, using my small pocket knife to dig a small hole in the earth, I placed the letter in front of the marble headstone engraved with Angelina's name.

Standing and turning I could see Sally standing by the car. I wiped away the tears and headed her direction, knowing that she too must make peace with a lost love before we could take our vows.
