Author Information:

Day Dreamer seems to specialize in incest stories, and his work remains very popular. Strangely, I have never seen an actual post by him; all his stories are posted by other people. This leads me to suspect a BBS origin for his work. Day Dreamer's stories all have a pleasing personal "voice", characterized by likable characters and a slow-moving, intimate style. Cousins is his most popular work, very frequently reposted. It is very uncertain whether he is still writing. For a list of his stories, see his entry in Ole Joe's Guide .

Celestial Review:

From Celestial Reviews 241 - December 10, 1997

"Cousins" by Day Dreamer (reposted by Cmdr Jameson). Guest review by The Bear.

This is a long story (over 120K) about a tender romance between a very shy boy
and a very shy girl who happen to be best friends. The plot is simple and
fairly predictable after you get past the first five or six paragraphs, but
the characters are well-realized, the narrative well-written, and the sex
(when it comes <g>) hot and erotic.

Two factors may cause squickage for some folks, so I'd better mention them.
First, these two young lovers are only fifteen years old. Second, besides
being best friends they are also first cousins (hence the title). The story
doesn't dwell on either fact, however; so if you prefer to imagine the lovers
as non-related friends of age seventeen or eighteen, there is not much in the
story that will jump up and remind you of their actual age and the incestuous
relationship.

It is a good story and I recommend it highly.

My Comments:

A beautifully written account of "emerging sexuality", nicely paced and believable. The author uses the same explanation for sex between relatives as is developed to a greater degree in Siblings : two shy cousins who have been intimate friends since childhood, discover that their friendship has developed into something more. As Celeste's reviewer comments, there isn't too much in the way of plot, but I just couldn't resist including this story.

What I really enjoyed about Cousins is the author's excellent portrayal of the feelings one has when first exploring the body of another: curiosity, excitement, fear, trepidation. These people don't want to jump straight into sex; they want to find out about each other's bodies, to see the things in reality which had existed before only as diagrams in sex education classes. Such an approach is rare compared to the typical "cumming-of-age" material; this is a plausible reason for the story's popularity.

Cousins is apparently unfinished. It presently ends with an event which is full of plot possibilities, but I have been unable to discover any material beyond Chapter 3. If the author intended to end the story this way, it would be most inconsistent with the general style; I really don't think it is complete in its present state. This is a great pity, for I think Cousins had the potential to become a classic story if imbued with more plot and character development. What we have of it, however, is still excellent.
