Tutor for Hire

 Schoolhouse

I'd found a gorgeous old-fashioned one-room school house for sale in an isolated patch of New England suburbia. It was just what I had been looking for.

You see I had recently changed professions. Before the market crash I was making ungodly fees as a trouble shooter for big corporations. When they had a problem they would call me. I came and studied how they did things to find where that problem actually laid and would proved them with a solution that would fix the issue.

But with the crash they begged me to lower my fees. However by then I really didn't need the money. If I was going to lower my fees I might as well work for clients that I would feel much more satisfaction in helping in the first place.

So I took my accreditation tests, and became a Tutor for Hire. See now why I wanted the old schoolhouse? The single mother of my first client had asked me, if I could backup my claim of guaranteed results, why didn't I just go work for some private school who could not only easily match my hourly rates, but provide a steady income to boot. I told her my specialty was finding the cause of the problem and implementing solutions to them, not the curriculum choice and getting it across to as many students as possible.

Lets take for example her son, Tyler. He was bright lad who wasn't matching his potential. His classwork was rarely complete, His teachers had reported they simply were unable to get him to focus and do his work, or pay attention in class. This was becoming a problem not only for his own work but was distracting his classmates as well. They have given Tyler all manner of testing to rule out any medical issue that could be the cause: such as poor eyesight or hearing, various learning disorders like dyslexia. When I met him with his mother I found him to be as billed, a bright and well mannered boy. And none of the attention problems showed when he did homework under his mother's supervision. The lack of attention in class did cause problems in completing the homework, having missed either the explanation or even that it had been assigned at all.

I soon found the root of the problem after Tyler and I got to spend some alone time. It turned out it wasn't a lack of ability to concentrate, but a lack of willingness. Tyler simple wasn't prepared to obey his teachers. He obeyed his mother out of parental bond so that a simply scolding from her would work when she was there. But nothing his teachers were willing to try worked for him. But my schoolhouse inspired a choice that did; a sore bottom.

Tyler is now a regular member of my after-school session. Along with a note containing a behavior report from his teacher that was dealt with before homework. His grades are much improved.

The End
