The Letter

By

Valerie Meilong <meilong@excite.com>

As she lay over her husband's lap bitterness crept over her like a shroud.  And fear too.  He was angry.  This was going to be a punishment spanking; not like the usual fun spankings.  This one was going to hurt.

He pulled down her knickers, accidentally scratching her bottom slightly with a fingernail as he did so.

Bitter memories coursed through her brain.  That damned bag!  Why had she kept it?  Or more precisely, why had she kept the letter in the lining pocket.  Finding it had been inevitable.  Not that the letter was that incriminating; merely a casual farewell letter from Charles when he arrive in South Africa.  Coldly innocuous.  But it kept the memories fresh.

As she felt the cool air on her bared bottom she remembered how erotic it seemed when Charles took her knickers off.  Well, what was a girl to do when her husband's away on an overseas assignment?  Six months celibacy is hard for someone red-blooded.  And Charles was so incredibly handsome and so incredibly sexy.  Persuasive too.  No wonder she fell for his insinuating charms.

It was only after he'd dumped her that she realised the depth of her infidelity.

She'd had no difficulty switching back to her husband when he returned, letting him use her body whenever and how he fancied, letting him spank her whenever he felt randy.

Oh, if she could only turn the clock back for one night; one bloody night, that's all!

"No need for a suitcase," he'd said.  "I'm only going to Paris for one night on the Eurostar.  I'll just take an overnight bag.  That old shoulder bag of yours in the basement will do," he'd said.  "It's not feminine."  And he'd taken it before she could stop him.

She'd worried all the next day, praying he wouldn't see the letter.  But even if he does, she told herself, it's innocuous.  He'd not guess the passion Charles had aroused in her so long ago.

When he came home he'd been so cheerful.  He'd either not seen it, she reasoned, or if he had he'd not seen anything untoward.  The relief!

While he went upstairs for a quick shower, she'd hastily searched the bag.  Yes!  There was the letter.  Quickly she'd taken it to the kitchen, used the gas lighter, and dumped the ashes in the bin.  Safe!  Safe!

He'd come down, still cheerful.  "That's better," he'd said.  "Darling, I've some good news.  You know that old letter from South Africa in your bag?  It's got a stamp on it with a flaw.  It's worth a fortune.  We're rich!"

He was not amused when she told him what she'd done.

The first smack landed.  It smarted dreadfully, and she had difficulty in suppressing the scream that nearly escaped from her throat.  She knew that after a few more this would be impossible.

His hand remorselessly continued to fall on her bare bottom.

She was right in her prediction.  She reached the point where screams could no longer be suppressed.

This story has a very clever plot-twist.  I never guessed where it was headed.  It is a neat use of poetic justice.  I could have done with more description of the actual spanking, but really this story doesn't need that, artistically, and it does leave room for the imagination, which is probably better.  This is a quite well done story, with no clear-cut flaws that I can see

I know it's far-fetched but the story reminded me of The Bridges of Madison County but with a twist.

There's something very old-fashioned about this story, but in a very good way.  It's a traditional short-story-with-a-twist-in-the-tail that works nicely even without the spanking content.  And that's both a strength and a weakness of the story: it doesn't depend too much on the spanking, but consequently the spanking is a bit too peripheral.  It's a great little read, though, and didn't end up at all where I expected it to, which gets much kudos from me.
