Mystery Date

By

Courtney <Courtenesca@aol.com>

Blind dates?  Scourges from Hell.  But a girl's gotta keep up.  Swimming with the fishes, going up stream to that same endless co-mingling we're supposedly here for?

Ugh!  Why me?  Why can't she leave well enough alone?  As if my life was truly *well*.  But, it's MY life!  If I choose to keep a low profile then it's my business.

"Denise, if your profile gets any lower we'll have to hire an earthmover to bring you to the surface.  Ben's a great guy.  You'll have fun; remember fun?" Anita, my friend the noodgy nanny of my personal life.  "You're going out with him, Denny.  I've told him all about you and he STILL wants to meet.  How many times d'ya think that's gonna happen, huh?"

Anita means well.  How did I get to be her challenge of the century? Why let her do this to me?"

"Negativity won't get you laid, Denise." Laid? Who wants a sweaty male crowding my personal space? That's what vibrators and Antonio Banderas films are for.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

"Anita said you were special.  I'm pleased to meet you, Denise.  You've beautiful blue eyes.  When you look at me."

Yeahyeahyeah.  I've capitulated to the inevitable.  We're meeting at a coffee bar.

"Ben, nice to meet you, but Anita's known to exaggerate a bit."  (A country mile?)  "Oh, not about you!  You're like she described....  Me? I'm not special."

"Self effacing.  Charming.  And utterly false.  Special is a unique aspect, agreed? In the eye of...and all that?  Frankly: I'll be the judge of my own impressions, Denise.  I reserve that right."

Ben's tone and enigmatic smile burrowed inside Denise's defenses.  Her tongue wet her twitching lips.  A wisp of hope fluttered.

"Ben, I'm not good at first meetings.  Tongue-tied.  In fact, I have to go.  It's been nice." She extended her hand, standing to escape.  Ben clasped it, studying the lifeline.  He pulled her back in her chair.

"Here's what I think: You'll sit with me, finish the coffee and our conversation like civilized people." His eyes deserted her palm, settling on her blue eyes.  His intensity glued Denise in place.

'But, I have to...."

"You don't.  We're taking a meeting, right? I don't like meetings to end before they get started.  Kinda funny about that.  And you know what, Denise? You like having me keep you here."

"You think...? I'm not some easy score! Don't get cocky!"

"Wouldn't dream of thinking you easy.  A challenge?  Definitely.  Someone who needs....  Taken in hand, perhaps.  You know what I'm implying?"

"Y--Yes, I know." Denise's words whispered.  Hopeful.  How did he...?  Her eyelashes masked her need: not enough to hide it from the perceptive man.

"Special.  Anita's right.  I want to know you, Denise.  Take you in hand.  Are you game?"  His smile bathed her in heavenly warmth.

"I...I'm game.  Are you?"

"I'm game.  Say it."  Fingers touched across the small café table.

"Take me in hand.  Please."

Surprised and eager, Denise and Ben left together for a more intimate encounter.

Blind dates notwithstanding.

Okay, all in all, this is a good read.  It gets a little confusing about what is actually said and what might be thought.  But I get the gist.  Talented author, it isn't easy to convey something in 500 words.  But WHERE IS THE SPANKING????  Technically, taking the lovely Denise in  hand, can imply many things including bondage.  <grins>  Give us a spank, kind author.

The originality of the plot is not too awfully unique.  But I like the attitude of the characters, and to be able to see that tells me that this story has great hope.  I would love to see some more work done on it and perhaps it could be submitted again.

Wouldn't we all like for the mystery men to do just this: share our desires, say and do just the right thing?  This story is sweet, uplifting, and a great fantasy material.

Having been myself, until a little over nine months ago, a confirmed bachelor, I can sympathize with Denise's opening thoughts about dating and "keeping a low profile" and I did get quite a chuckle out of the «vibrators and Antonio Banderas» line.

I'm going to assume that, when Anita told Ben «all about» Denise, she really did tell him all about her ... otherwise, the scene in the cafe just doesn't work for me.  It just seems to forced, too fantastical.  The switch from first-person to third-person narration was also a bit jarring.
