The Question

By

Echild <echild@mail.lokmail.net>

He lay motionless on the couch, the arm-rest pressing unsupportively at his cheek.  Across the room, images of cars flashed at his eyes as unknowing voice-overs tried to distract him.  But all he could think of was the space in front of him, the space that was once filled with another body.  He wrapped his arms around the air and felt her warmth down his every inch, pushing at his stomach and floating around his legs.  He brushed her hair off her ear and kissed it.  Then the screen flashed and he was alone again.

They had been there together when he asked.  He asked because it was a part of him that was forever unfulfilled.  Because she, who had professed to love him, was in his arms and able to fulfill.  But when he asked, her warmth turned to the cold of aborted love and she blew away with the wind of ill-fated words, leaving him to lie on the couch and embrace her memory for countless hours.

But he finally sat up, for he realized that just as asking caused one love to leave, it would surely cause another to stay.

I liked this one.  It speaks to so many of us who have endured the rejection of someone who did not understand.  I'm glad I found one who does.

I like this one for its image of a place I've been, and a time I'm glad has passed.
