After an hour in the smoke filled darkness watching innumerable cocks thrusting into innumerable cunts, listening to the grunting accompanying each stroke, he was beginning to wish he'd never entered the tawdry cinema. He winced involuntarily, visualising the look on his wife's face if she could see him now.  He had never been to a porno cinema before, just an impulse while he had time to kill.

His thoughts were interrupted as the grainy film finished and another one began.  He was almost asleep from the heat and smoke but suddenly he realised that this film was different.  The man on screen was sternly addressing a young teenage girl in jodhpurs and riding hat, the girl weeping bitterly.  As the man pointed at her the girl began to plead but then slowly began to unbutton her trousers before sliding them to her ankles. Another harsh command and her knickers followed suit, both kicked off completely as she stood half naked in total humiliation.

He shot up in his seat.  Jesus this was better!.  He began to sweat as the girl was directed to the sofa and ordered to bend over it.  Christ what he'd give to get Evelyn in this position after one of her shopping sprees!  Sadly he knew that real women didn't respond to this sort of treatment but hell ..enjoy the fantasy!  His cock was rock hard for the first time that afternoon as the angry man picked up a cane and ordered the girl to stick her bottom right up.

So engrossed was he in the action that he hardly heard the soft voice next to him asking for a light, suddenly aware that a young woman had taken the seat on his left. Absently he flicked his lighter and obliged, briefly acknowledging the thanks .  His warning system began to flash red alert as he realised the young woman was appraising him.  Oh no, not stuck with a prostitute!  What else would she be doing here ?  The film continued with a severe and realistic caning to the girl's bottom, red weals well brought out in the close ups and he was sweating hard, his throat dry.

Half way through the action, he became aware that the young woman next to him was gripping his arm tightly as suddenly his erection withered and panic took over.  What could he do?  Resolution was at hand as the film concluded with the sobbing girl pulling up her pants, the hand suddenly relaxing its grip.

'God that was exciting...'the young woman whispered '...sorry if I ...'

'Er..no..its OK' he muttered stiffly and eased his arm away.

'Are you married?' she asked suddenly and finally his fears overflowed.

'Look I don't know what your game is but find another punter, OK?' he snapped, rising to his feet and leaving, never once looking back to see the tears, the sadness and humiliation etched on the pretty face of a young woman who had once more made a bad move in her life.

This story is really haunting, and pops into my head at the oddest times. The main character is painfully human, trapped in a sort of limbo between his desires and his expectations of himself and the world around him.  Sad, compelling, and very well done, though I found the ending a little abrupt.

The central character here is fascinating, not least because he is so unsympathetic. He is very believeable, his actions and reactions feel real, and his harsh reaction to the girl is unexpected and shocking. The picture of a tentative and nervous girl being crushed by this man is vividly conveyed. In all a very evocative piece of writing.

It's also intriguing to see it as a piece of feminist allegory. I would never previously have suspected Alex of being a writer of feminist diatribe, but the construction is unavoidable. We have a porno cinema, which is about as much of a male bastion as one can imagine. Inside is a man, clearly ill at ease with himself and his sexuality, craving sex but nervous of the reactions to his desires, insecure even with his own wife. A woman intrudes on this male space, attempts to assert her own sexuality in the most gentle way, and is brutally put down. The man assumes that a sexually vital and assertive woman must be a prostitute! A classic illustration of the way that men repress the sexuality of women and expect them to conform to passive role models.

On another level still, of course, the feminist imagery is so strong, so laboured, that possibly Alex is attempting to satirise the clumsy and aggressive style of feminist writers of the 70s and 80s. The metaphor parodies itself even as it is created, it makes the point but mocks the style in which the point is made. This is deep stuff indeed.
