Tabitha had no reason to be on Clark Street at two in the morning, but she'd volunteered to see if it could be used. The guard spotted her and rushed toward her. Damn. That route was useless for their proposed escape - there were even guards watching Clark Street, as they called it, the narrow space between the dormitories.
They'd worked out an emergency strategy in case she was caught, so immediately she heard his guttural "Halt" she outstretched her arms, closed her eyes, and walked slowly forward. He grabbed her. She gave a histrionic jump, and dreamily said, "Where am I?" It was feeble, they all knew that, but it was better than nothing.
She was marched to the Guard House, and was locked away in a cell.
God! She hated this place. They called it a school. In reality, it was a prison for young foreign girls caught in the country when war broke out. It was more like a concentration camp.
Next morning she was sentenced to routine punishment, and lucky to get away with that. She went to the punishment room, and Lieutenant Schultz appeared.. "Thank God it's not that lecherous swine, Krantz," she thought. She took down her knickers and bent over the old vaulting horse and was given the standard six. Schulz's six was bearable, though only just. Had it been Krantz she'd be hoarse from screaming by now.
It was mandatory to report to the doctor after routine punishment for treatment if the skin had been broken. In the surgery a naked girl lay on the examination bench, and the doctor was probing between her widespread legs. He glanced up. "Strip," he said peremptorily.
"But, Sir, I'm only here for…"
"Don't argue. Strip!" he barked, and turned back to the interesting part of the girl on the bench.
"But…"
He straightened up. "When I give you an order, girl, you obey. Understand?" He reached for a cane that was lying on his desk. "Bend over."
"But…" she tried again. "I said bend over," he thundered.
"What's this?" said a quiet voice. It was the Commanding Officer who'd been passing and had heard the commotion.
"This girl is here for her annual medical, Sir, and she refused to strip. Because she refused my order I am about to beat her."
"I see," said the Colonel. "What have you to say, girl."
"He wouldn't let me speak, Sir. I am not here for a medical. I've just had routine punishment, and am only here for the usual check of no skin broken."
The Colonel frowned. "Doctor," he said coldly, "I suggest you allow your patients to speak next time. It would save your blood pressure." The doctor coloured at the rebuke.
The Colonel turned to the girl. "You, girl, must obey an orders from an officer. He told you to bend over. Do so!"
Reluctantly she put her hands on her knees. "Doctor." said the Colonel. "Lift her skirts and give her two on her knickers."

This read more like a vignette than a complete story. Bergen Academy sounds like an intriguing place, and Tabitha an interesting character. I wouldn't mind reading more about her exploits -- and those of Krantz, and Lt. Schulz, and the doctor, and the Colonel.

In this blackly humorous work the author highlights the eternal truth about every military service---obeying an officer is paramount. Questioning his logic undermines authority. Funny how easily this formula is transcribed to the teaching profession which Valerie has paralleled in this piece. I think the lass was lucky only getting two more on her knickers for such insolence! Nice one
