Applied Psychology

By

Valerie Meilong <VMeilong1@excite.com>

"I assure you, Madam, no teacher employed at the Montecini School uses corporal punishment. It's been forbidden since the first Montecini died in the 1970s, more than a hundred years ago. None of the Montecini's who succeeded him allow teachers to use the cane."

Mr. Arbuthnot remained sceptical. "Ha! You use androids."

"We employ androids, yes, but none of them is programmed to apply any form of physical punishment."

"Then how d'yer make boys with a rambunctious personality like Edward, obedient and respectful?"

The headmaster smiled. "Applied Psychology, Sir. We even have a guarantee. Pay three terms fees in advance, and if your child is not fully reformed by the end of the first term we will refund your money, and give the rest of the year's tuition free of charge."

"Done," said Mr. Arbuthnot promptly.

Nearly three months later the senior tutor sighed. "Absolute calamity, Headmaster. That boy's impossible. He's abusive, stubborn, recalcitrant. He's demonic. We'll be stuck with a free year's tutoring to that…that… gorilla." The headmaster smiled. "So, action is called for." He opened the wide drawer in his desk, and took out a cane. The senior tutor gasped. "But that's against the law! You wouldn't risk that?"

"Of course not. They'd close us down immediately. We've too many jealous enemies on the council."

"Android?"

"Certainly not.  No, leave everything to me. I've a Montecini trick up my sleeve.

Two days before Parents' Day, the senior tutor beamed. "That enfant terrible's a different boy. He's well-behaved, polite, obedient, indeed a model pupil. You must've used that cane damned effectively."

"I did not use the cane," protested the headmaster." He paused dramatically.. "I'll let you in on the secret, Charles, but I must swear you to secrecy, now and forever. Will you swear?"

"Yes, yes, of course."

"We have a Hamic beta-transporter. Disgustingly expensive, and highly secret, but worth its weight in gold to this school. When we get a rogue gorilla, as you neatly put it, we beam up professor Montecini. He canes our rogue villains. Transfer is almost instantaneous, and therefore he has a cast-iron alibi, and we can swear that no teacher or android has caned anyone."

They both chuckled.

The next morning, Edward, stood before the headmaster. "I'm terribly sorry to bother you, sir," he said politely. "I know you're busy. But it is important." The headmaster beamed. It was a pleasure to see such a well-behaved pupil. "My stars! What a change," he thought to himself.

"May I come straight to the point?" said the boy smoothly. The head nodded. "My change of attitude," said Edward, "will save the school quite a lot of money. A great deal of money. A year's fees here are hideously expensive, are they not? But what if I changed back to my normal self." The headmaster kept his face straight, but he had a queasy feeling in his stomach. The boy looked at him steadily. "Perhaps, er…ten percent, if I remain goody, goody? Agreed?"

Possibly an additional session is in order, we wouldn't want to begin giving in now, would we.  The ending really wasn't that much of a surprise, but it does leave room for chapter 2.  All in all, a good effort.
