They led her into the largest pool of the three in the courtyard and under the fountain. When they had arranged her wet hair, they led her to the second pool, and -- then -- to a sheet laid on the sand. She lay on it while two women held her feet and two other ones held her arms above her head. The plucking of each hair from her armpit hurt. When they were done, though, other women rubbed scented oils on the sore flesh. Two more women led her to the smallest pool and gestured for her to sit in it. The water came just under her breasts. When they led her out to another sheet, she began to struggle. Soon, though, they had her pinned spread-eagle on the ground. As the woman kneeling between her legs began to pluck the hairs from her mound, she forgot all about the previous pain in her armpits. And, as the tweezers attacked the hairs on her labia, the pain only got worse. When they were done, though, they rubbed even more scented oil over the painful places. The rubbing began to arouse a different sort of sensation. She resented the giggles when the women pointed to her most sensitive spot, but the sensations when they stroked it were heavenly. When the sunset cry came from outside, they left her alone to go through their washing and bowing rituals. When these were done, they gave her a white robe to wear. They handed her a flat pillow covered in white silk and led her to the door. When it opened, a richly dressed man took her hand. |
