Word Count:
Holding hands, they strolled back to their humble yet partially luxurious apartment. The few clouds that were in the sky gave the full moon plenty of room to shine, almost giving everything a shadow, but one of light instead of darkness. Sometimes a full moon can do weird things....
En route, they crossed through an old park. None of the lights were lit, bringing out the full glory of the shining stars. Looking around, he stopped... and her along with him.
"I want to show you something," he said, gently letting go of little girl's hand.
Exhaling, he told her to keep her hands loosely held, but by her sides. "Look up," he said. She did so, looking up at the odd color of the scarce clouds, the stars shining, the moon radiating a very moving glow that emanated across the entire sky. A moment later, it almost felt as though she were inside a planetarium. Her beautiful green eyes seemed to be the rounded dome, not quite being able to encompass the entire panorama at a single time, but enough of it to be awed.
"Look at the stars, look at the houses, look at the vast space between them." All of the lights from the houses in the near distance seemed to be as tiny as the stars, but at the same time, almost as powerful. Every star has its own powerful grace, but seeing the houses lit just beneath them.... Almost makes you feel a part of this whole thing doesn't it?"
The ten-year-old girl looked at him as his eyes slowly gazed downwards until finally meeting hers. Smiling he asked her to look back up and reach her hand out towards the stars as if she wanted to hold them. Stretching her tiny arm all the way out, a feeling came over her as she saw her arm and the stars, oh so far away.
"Kind of makes your arm feel like it's only one inch long doesn't it?"
"Yes." She didn't know what to make of it.
"It's strange how your arm is not long enough to physically touch the stars, but at the same time, just standing here, it feels as though you already are touching them... and always have."
Looking into her big innocent eyes as she lowered her arm, he continued. "You know when it rains and you see all the rain drops hitting the ground, all the thousands of millions of them? Well, can you physically touch them all before they hit the ground?"
"No."
"How do you feel when you see all those rain droplets hitting the ground?"
Taking a small breath and exhaling, she replied. "It feels... like I'm taking a shower... and something new is revealed."
Smiling, he lowered his head and then raised it to look back into her eyes.
"You know, your arm may not be able to catch every rain drop or be long enough to touch every star, but one thing I am grateful for is how the palm of your little hand can strike my bare heart."
Totally overcoming her, little girl moved towards him, giving him a kiss on the lips and embracing him. In response, he gently wrapped his arms around her.
"I love you" she said.
"I love you too," he whispered back.
They stood there, embracing each other, in the middle of the field, beneath the stars, surrounded by the trees and dimly lit houses in the near distance. Together, they were a part of it all, that something special... but at the same time, they also rocked the other's world....
