Eduardo had been teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for six years - ever since he got his Advanced Teacher's Certificate two years after high school - but he had only recently started working at TechNSpeak language school in his hometown of Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico. He liked his new job, in that they didn't use text books (so students didn't have any homework to grade), there was little emphasis on grammar, and teachers were given a lot of flexibility and autonomy.

TechNSpeak owed its success not only to the quality of its teachers but also because of three unique features: its innovative program, the use of technology, and the fact that students could choose their own, variable, class hours. Students were expected to spend three hours per week on the computer and three hours per week in class with a teacher - but they could choose to attend any combination of days and hours (Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. till 9 p.m. or Saturdays from 8:00 until 3:00.

The vast majority of TechNSpeak's students were young adults and teenagers, although there were also a number of working adults, and even retired people. There were a only handful of kids, and although there was a special Kids' Program, they invariably were a problem for Eduardo. Not that the children caused discipline problems, oh, no; but that they didn't have individual "follow-up" sheets as the adults did (meaning teachers had no idea what the children already knew and what they needed to learn), and the meager number of pupils meant that the children in a given "Kids' Class" could range in age from 6 to 12. Anyone who has ever worked with children knows that six and seven-year-olds have little in common with eleven and twelve-year-olds, and really don't belong in the same classroom.

With schools out for the summer, most children who study English at TechNSpeak do so during the week rather than on Saturdays. When Little Richard got his final piano licks in, Eduardo turned off the CD player and they sat down. "Wow, you're a good dancer, but let's go over those things again," he said to Doria. Grabbing her right arm, he added, "When I say, 'Put your right hand in,' you're supposed to use this one."

He did the same for the left hand and then with each leg, rubbing his hand along the length of her thigh and slightly under her skirt. He touched her head and looked out the window of his classroom.

It was customary to keep the doors of the classrooms closed so as not to be disturbed by noise coming from another classroom.
