It is at this point in time I feel I should interject with some planetary and cultural history pertinent to your understanding of the affairs of the people we came from.
In other words, I know you are confused.
Let me explain what I can, without ruining the wondrous surprises we have in store to share together.
Those who realize it is not a flat surface stuck in the middle of existence call our planet Myrkulle. Myrkulle is a normal, albeit rare, planetoid, round, close enough to a star of great energy to actually sustain a great deal of life.
Apparently, although I am hardly a teacher of such knowledge so I go by what I have been told, Myrkulle supported this variety of life for quite sometime. It is called "evolution", this process that allows things that are not very…complex, shall we say? Yes, evolution allows for things that are not very complex to eventually become complex.
For example, take humankind. We developed from some race of beings that did not look nor behave as we do now.
The same cannot be said for the Mystic Kinde.
Would you be very shocked if I told you that the Mystic Kinde are not the natural order of things for Myrkulle?
I knew you would be.
Humans were here before the Mystic Kinde.
But beasts were here before we humans.
At some point, humans were truly no more than beasts themselves.
It didn't remain that way, though.
And that is evolution for you. Through some fluke of evolution, we changed how we acted, how we communicated….what we believed in.
From that point on, and for a great deal after, humankind ruled the planet of Myrkulle!
Startling, isn't it!
Things change, however. Sometimes, it is a fluke of evolution.
Other times, it seems like an utter act of Fate.
Humankind learned many things to become more than just beasts. But they also forgot many things when they moved up the ladder and the food chain. Beasts learn from mistakes. If you continuously smack a dog on the nose every time it puts its maw into your crotch, as dogs are wont to do, it will learn.
Every time a human messes with something they should not, they do not necessarily learn a lesson.
Such is our plight, no?
Well, to make a long story short, I will cut to the chase.
At some point, the denizens of Myrkulle learned magick. And that is where it all fell apart.
We ruled for about a good few thousand years after that, creating so many great and wondrous things. We studied hard and delved deep, deep into things we should not have delved into at all.
And we were smacked on the nose.
Often.
But we did not learn.
Such is the way of things. If the dog continues to stick its nose where it should not, well. What is to be done?
Out it goes, out of the house, out into the rain and the dirt.
Out to where the beasts are.
And that is where we catch up to where we are now, us citizens of Myrkulle.
Many times, humankind was thrown out of the house for its refusal to adhere to universal principles and eternally watchful rules and bylaws. And each time we snuck our way right back in through the crack in the kitchen door.
This last time, however, our master caught us.
Humans groped about the realms and dimensions of magick like bloodhounds. But we didn't know what we were looking for, really. We were just happy to have found anything, to hop on the trail of this mystical rabbit or that alchemical squirrel.
What we found, by pure happenstance, was so amazing and incredible. It was never meant for our eyes or even our world.
We took it anyways, regardless of the safeguards that warned us not to touch, not to sniff out that musky scented groin.
The swat was harsh, and quick in coming. And we were dragged out of the house, beaten and broken, and penned.
Such is how you see us now.
What did we learn? What did we find?
We found power, and magick beyond belief. And the means with which to control Myrkulle's very nature, its very existence.
We found the Mystic Kinde.
It is time for me to shock you once again.
Humans made the Mystic Kinde.
Our oppressors, our self-proclaimed rulers, masters and "superiors".
We made them.
And they turned on us. They, the beasts, leashed us, their creators!
We have been penned in darkness and obeisance ever since.
Stupid humans, they call us. Stupid, ignorant, witless, and cultureless. No science, no depth, and very little magick in our magickless bodies. We have to pull it from the earth beneath us, tear it painfully from our souls. The worlds we used to cavort and frolic in are closed to us now.
Or, at least, they were.
Before Daru and I came along, humans were a subspecies next to the Mystic Kinde, barely better than cattle or …goats.
We were here to change that, though.
And we didn't even know that until it was almost too late.
