The icon indicates the genders of the characters (male or female), their roles (dominant, equal, or submissive), and who is the viewpoint character.

The arrow (a stylized penis) indicates a male character, and the shield (a stylized vulva) indicates a female charactrer.

The bright symbol indicates the viewpoint character. The dim symbol or symbols indicate the non-viewpoint character or characters.

Usually, only one character is viewpoint. However, if multiple symbols are bright, that means that more than one characters are the viewpoint characters -- either through omniscient narrator, or switching the viewpoint in each chapter or section.

A large symbol enclosing smaller symbols indicates the dominant character or characters.

A small symbol inside the circle of a larger symbol indicates a submissive character or characters.

Also, in some cases, there may be aspects of a story in which the character's role changes from submissive to dominant, or dominant to submissive.
