REGRETS
She was awake. She was also upset and confused—I could tell by the stiffness of her body in my arms.
"Good morning," I said. She didn’t say anything. "Nikka, talk to me."
"Oh, God, Craig, what did we do?"
"That’s been building for some time, and you know it. And you seduced me."
"Not that I had to try all that hard," she said wryly. Then the despair leaked back in. "Craig, I’m nineteen. You’re forty!"
"That’s not what’s bothering you, and you know it."
"You’re right," she sighed. "What is Ellie going to say?"
"I don’t know," I admitted.
"We’ve been lovers since we were fourteen. She’s going to freak."
"She knew all along that you were bisexual."
"As is she," Nikka said. "But your girlfriend going to bed with a guy is one thing. Your girlfriend going to bed with your father? Craig, she’s going to freak."
I couldn’t help chuckle. "Do you remember when I walked in on you guys? I never knew before that."
"Oh God," Nikka moaned. "We were fifteen. I had my head buried in her crotch, and in you walked. I was mortified."
"I remember. I’ve wanted you since then. But you were a kid at that point—which you’re not anymore—and I had to know that you wanted it. I thought you did."
"I did," Nikka asserted. "But it’s so complicated."
"I love you, you know," I told her in all honesty. "I don’t give a shit about the age difference. I love you."
"I love you, too," Nikka cooed. But then she frowned. "But I love Ellie, too. It’s so complicated!"
Just then, we heard a thump. "Oh, shit, was that the front door?" I asked.
"Craig, I thought she was going to be later than this!" Ellie had stayed over her grandparents’ house.
"So did I."
"Dad? Dad? Are you still in bed, you lazy goof?" I heard my daughter’s laugh through the house. The footsteps headed towards the bedroom.
"Oh shit oh shit oh shit," Nikka moaned. The door opened.
"Hello, Ellie," I said. She looked at me, and at Nikka, and back at me. Her eyes opened wide.
"Dad? You…and Nikka?"
I couldn’t say anything. Nikka looked like she was going to cry. When suddenly Ellie broke out into a huge grin, raised her hands to the sky, and yelped, "FINALLY!"
