That Friday was the night of the big party at Paula's house and
Missy had literally been walking around school sweating buckets
waiting for Paula to show up and make sure she would come.
Paula never showed.
At home that evening the argument started back up again and her
father accused her mother of torturing him and making his life
miserable. Missy thought to herself that they were both making
her miserable and she just wanted to get away from it. She went
up to her room and left them to argue in the kitchen. She knew
that it must be really serious when she heard a dish or glass
or something break. Missy paced the floor back and forth, back
and forth. Soon there came a knocking at the door and her brother
came in.
"They're at it again." He said solemnly. Missy stared back at
him and he actually turned away. Her eyes were on fire and he
had never seen her so angry, so...
"I'm so embarrassed! I can't believe that I have parents like
this!" Missy yelled. Her brother backed away from her, afraid.
She stepped up to him and pressed her body against his, pinning
him to the door. "My GOD Patrick! Who has parents like this?!
Fucking lunatics!!"
Missy and Patrick stood by the open door listening to the yelling
and the screaming. Patrick looked terrified. Missy looked at him
and scoffed at his weakness. In her mind she saw herself shaking
him to attention and making him go down there and tell her parents
to shut up, but instead she just walked past him and charged down
the stairs. She pounded each stair, trying to make her entry into
the kitchen as dramatic as possible. She didn't even really know
what she was going to say until the words came out of her mouth,
"I want to go to a party! I need someone to take me!"
Her mother rounded on her, anger and tears welling in her eyes,
"You are going to do no such thing young lady, you march right..."
"I'll take you." Her father said defiantly. Her mother rounded
on him now and she was furious. He looked back at her and smiled.
Missy smiled too.
As her father pulled up into the driveway, Missy tried not to
recoil at the horror before her. Paula's house was small, in Missy's
mind it was tiny, the kind of thing that only circus people lived
in or something. 'It could only have maybe two bedrooms at the
most' Missy almost said aloud. She turned and looked at her father,
trying to gauge his reaction. They seemed to be thinking the same
thing and he turned to her and said, "Where do you know this girl
from?" but Missy could hear that what he was really saying was,
"Do I want to be seen driving up in this drive way?"
Missy opened the door before the car had even come to a stop.
Her father tried to tell her something about calling him or something
but she just stepped out of the car and slammed the door. Then
she felt a pit in her stomach and she reluctantly turned and opened
the door again. She looked at her father who was smiling at her
and she held out her hand and said, "I need money." He opened
his mouth to say something and Missy thought for a second that
he might actually be trying to say "no" but instead he reached
in his pocket and pulled out a twenty and handed it to her.
"Twenty?" Missy said, holding the bill like it was covered with
slime.
"It's all I have pumpkin." Her father said defensively.
"Hmmpphhh" Missy snorted and she turned and walked away. She heard
her father yell, "Have a good time." as she walked away and then
he was gone.
She could hear voices already inside. Missy tried to hold her
head up and face her fear but she was shaking somewhere down deep,
somewhere she couldn't quite get control of. She knocked on the
door and a guy answered.
To Missy he looked drunk and she stepped past him distastefully.
Inside she saw a few kids from her school but mostly kids she
didn't recognize at all. One of the guys came over and put his
arm around Missy and she pushed him so hard he fell into the coffee
table.
"Shit! What the fuck!?"
"Haha! She pushed your ass!"
Missy looked back and forth between the two drunk boys and said,
"Excuse me?" They had now started trying to butt heads and Missy
was reminded at why she had never liked being around boys. "Excuse
me?" She said a little louder.
"Hey Tom, your girlfriend is trying to ask you something?"
"What?" Tom said.
Missy scowled at the two of them and then she turned her nose
up and asked, "Paula?" She raised her eyebrows at them as if they
should know what she was speaking of. The one named Tom looked
at her and said, "What?"
"Paula, you know? The girl who lives here?"
The other looked at Tom and his expression changed from mock laughter
to surprised fear. Tom started back up again, "Sheeeaaatttt, who
the hell? I don' know no fuckin' Pau.."
"Dude!" The greasy dark haired one was now tapping Tom on the
shoulder. Tom took a moment to think about it and then he reacted,
"WHAT!" He yelled.
"Dude, that's the chick."
"The chick?"
"Yeah man, you know?" and he motioned to little hallway behind
the couch. Tom's mouth opened in a big O and he was like, "Ohhhh,
that chick! Holy sheeeaaatttt!!"
Missy was getting very annoyed with them and she just wanted to
push past both of them or hit them or shoot them or something
to wipe that smug look off their smug little boy faces, but instead
she calmed herself and with as stern a tone as she could muster
she asked again, "Yes, it would appear you both know her? Now,
is she here or do I have to search the house?"
The two boys backed up and looked at Missy, eyes moving up and
down. Missy crossed her arms self consciously and then the one
named Tom opened his mouth and spit out, "Are you like a teacher
or something?"
"Shit no, dumbass! She ain't old enough to be a teacher!"
"You ain't a teacher?" The one named Tom said again, almost falling
onto her. She started to shake her head and say something else
when he said, "Well, then can I fuck your titties!?" At this the
other dark haired one started to choke on whatever it was he was
drinking and Tom started to shake with stupid laughter. Missy
was furious! But she didn't say a word and she could see all the
boys who had always made fun of her standing there laughing. Now
it would only be a matter of time before they started to try to
grope her or pull at her bra strap. She was just about to walk
out of the house when Paula came from the back room. She stumbled
over as another guy pushed past her so that he could do a high
five with his friends. They hooted and hollered something and
Missy tried to make her way to Paula. Paula saw her for a second
but didn't seem to recognize her. Then Paula wiped her mouth and
fell into a group of people all sitting on the floor. The three
boys all looked around at the rest of the people and then Paula
started to yell, "So who is next? Anyone else want a blowjob?!"
At this, the three boys turned red and fought their way to the
door, laughing as they made there way out. A skinny boy all dressed
in black made his way over to Paula and helped her to the couch
and suddenly Paula started crying.
"I'm just shit!" Paula screamed and Missy made her way over to
where Paula was sitting. She wanted to try to help Paula, but
she only sat on the far end of the couch, watching Paula cry.
"Sammy?" Paula said, looked up at the skinny boy.
"Yes?" he replied.
"Why is the world such a fucked up place?" and then Paula started
laughing but Missy could see she was still crying behind the laughter.
Sammy started laughing uncomfortably and then Paula turned around
and looked at me.
"Missheey!" Paula slurred, "I'm so glad you made it! About time
you got that uptight ass out of the house!"
Missy let it pass and she looked over at the other kids who were
all looking as shocked as she felt. "Hi Paula." was all Missy
could muster.
"Hey! I love this song! Come on Misshy, let's dance!" and Paula
grabbed Missy's hands and pulled her up to dance. Missy tried
not to pull away as Paula pushed her hips into her. Paula was
moving in ways that Missy didn't even think were possible and
she felt Paula's crotch grinding into her leg. Paula smiled up
at Missy and tried to pull Missy's hands again, trying to make
her dance. Soon the kid named Sammy turned and started dancing
with Paula. The both of them were dancing so well Missy just stood
there, unsure if she should sit back down or keep dancing. She
started to move her feet, sort of bobbing back and forth. She
felt really stupid and this made her angry again. She thought
that Paula must be doing this on purpose, that Paula must hate
her.
"I'm leaving." Missy yelled into Paula's ear.
"Leaving?" Paula yelled, grabbing Missy's arms and pulling her
back. Missy turned around and pulled away from Paula and started
to charge for the door. Paula came up again and said, "What's
wrong?"
"This just isn't for me." Missy said quietly.
"You just got here, how do you know if it's good for you? You
haven't even given it a chance!"
"I just don't know." and Missy was about to come up with her favorite
ten excuses for not letting herself have any fun, but instead
Paula jumped in like she always does and said, "Hey! Just hang
out and drink a little something and give it another hour. I promise
you, you're gonna have the time of your life!"
"Ok, just another hour and then I really gotta go." Missy was
about to try to sit down or something but Paula pulled her back
on the dance floor.
"Can you believe I just did that?"
"Did what?"
Paula looked back at her with bloodshot eyes and then smiled weakly,
"Nothin', just talking shit."
Missy didn't know what to do, Paula was making her very uncomfortable,
she was dancing close, too close. Then Paula said, "Can I kiss
you?"
"WHAT!"
Paula didn't wait for a reply, she just leaned in and tried to
kiss her. Missy nearly shot across the room and Paula stood there
for a moment and they both looked at each other, then the skinny
kid in black started dancing with her again and Missy retreated
to a corner. Missy felt warm, too warm but she couldn't move,
only watch Paula and wonder if she would try that again.
And if next time she would let her?
