Silences Speak

In her silences she does speak
saying naught for good or ill
few hints to guide my heart
but silence lays not still.

I fight with the daemons borne
of my childhood so empty of heart
my fears feast on this darkness
each fighting to play a part.

She knows not what she tells me
when she holds her voice within
thinking I'm hearing her approval
I hear reminders that I've sinned.

Others seem to hear rejoicing
in silences their mate projects
hearing yes, oh yes and thank you dear
never to think of their rejects.

We each hear different things
in the silences from those held dear
measur'd lessons we have learned
our expections to be seen clear.

Silences, especially long ones, will reflect where we've been in our lives, reflecting our mindset, attitudes, strengths and weaknesses.

For those who have enough hope and confidence the silences are populated with the implied sounds of assent.

For others who lack differentiation and so look to their mate for hints towards their own identity, these silences provide a stage we people with our darkest fears.

We each hear something different in the silences of our beloved, ranging from the sighs of happiness to the growl of scorn ...

... but in silence it is for the listener to choose.

What do you hear?
