We talked that night for hours
explaining about our lives
how we both had reached this place
surviving all our fights
She told me of her children
there that late at night
I learned so much of her fears
and her former husband's choice
There was little I could tell her
for I hadn't yet lived true
but I could feel for her
and for all that she'd had lost
Her children had been taken
one cold and snowy night
slashed tires and the ER
kept her away from their flight
Lawyers would not help her
her husband had some right
despite her custody papers
she was advised not to fight
Alone, so alone,
she lived without a life
to comfort her and remind her
how her life was all worth while
Mother's day, I was there
when she hung up and poured out tears
but I knew her and I loved her
so I wrapped her in my arms
We would see how we could live
together yet far apart
we did come to be so much closer
for her this was no start
Not serious yet grave
our hearts they did yet mesh
we could not be apart for long
for I learned of love's price
A woman is so fragile,
as fragile as my heart
but when she was there in it
how strong it beat for both
Her former mates family
did try to do her wrong
but when they cut her spirit
it was me that did then bleed
Protection I was sworn to,
ahead of the famous vows
I was dedicated to her defense
against those far and near
Those former wanted to deny her
the children she had held dear
but she had the words and magic
to bring them home so near
We married with her children
as witnesses to our vows
my wife to love and cherish
her needs and mine to share
The formers took them again
away from whom had borne
against the laws and warnings
fled across state lines again
For the feds didn't care then
though now they do believe
we had to pursue with papers
and later to collect them here
We were whole one small family
living under serious threat
for her former's father
swore to take them from her yet
We learned more legal jargon
than any shouldst ever hear
we fled ourselves from the state
avoiding what we feared
A family we lived together
a year and more just us
then we started yet one more
and my son was on his way
She still hides from her nightmares
by only sleeping where she falls
for dreams are no haven
when the memories come to call
I cannot help this woman
who fights within her past
I can only comfort her
and remind her not to fear
