Reader's Resources.

The web is a fantastic place. Visiting an author's website is a great way to get to know them a little better as well as a great place to find the author's collection. The web is a terrible place to find new authors though. My links page is the only page I know of that can point you to real story sites (as opposed to yet another lame commercial). But even my list is not all inclusive.

If you're serious about stories then there's only one place on all the internet to go: the usenet groups. What's usenet you ask? Think of usenet as public e-mail. When a person posts to usenet that message is instantly readable by millions of other people who read usenet. There is a usenet group for every interest under the sun, from gardening to (of course) sex stories.

Usenet will allow you to quickly discover when your favorite authors have written a new story as well as discover brand new authors. Think of Usenet as a newspaper and the Web as the Library. You find the things that interest you on Usenet but you really explore those interests on the web.

Wanna give it a try? To start out, I suggest you "lurk". That is read, study, and learn, but don't post, not until you have a good feel for what you're getting into. But trust me, reading is more than entertaining. The best place to start your journey is on dejanews. Here's a list of story groups to get you started.

  • alt.sex.stories.moderated (*)
  • alt.sex.stories.gay.moderated (*)
  • soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm (*)
  • soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm.femdom (*)
  • alt.sex.stories.d (Discussion) (**)
  • alt.sex.stories.bondage
  • alt.sex.stories.cuckold
  • alt.sex.stories.gay
  • alt.sex.stories.hetro
  • alt.sex.stories.incest
  • alt.sex.stories.tg (transgender)

(*) Moderated group see notes on SPAM below.
(**) Discussion group see notes on posting below.

When you've lurked enough and want to start posting then I suggest you still start slowly and stay with Dejanews.. You can set up an e-mail and news account (for free of course, they are supported by banner advertizing). The advantages to creating a dejanews account is that dejanews will track the posts you've read, thread the messages for you, and of course allow you to post messages.

The only place that you're supposed to post non stories is in alt.sex.stories.d or the soc.subculture groups (soc.subculture is a mixture of discussion and stories). However considering the flood of advertizing in the non-moderated groups, no one is likely to complain about anything you're likely to write, though outside the designated discussion groups no one is likely to reply either.

And now we come to the "Safe posting & SPAM" part of this article. You're ready to post. Congradulations! A new voice is a wonderful thing! You've been lurking for a while so you already know about all those hidious commercial messages that make finding the stories and such kinda hard to find. The comemrcials are called SPAM. Everybody hates them, so you're not alone. The only thing you can really do is ignore them and refuse to patronize any service which is advertized this way. These people are not supporting Usenet, they are destroying it. Moderated groups have no spam. A real person checks each post and makes sure it's commercial free and on-topic before allowing others to see it. Moderated groups are the oasises and you'll probably be spending the bulk of your time there.

But back to posting. SPAM is bad enough, but when you post a message on Usenet there are people who have programs that collect email addresses from Usenet posts. If you post, you will suddenly start to get unsolicited commercial ads in your email box. If you post in an adult area of Usenet you'll start getting X-Rated commercial ads. But there is a cure. Either set up a mailbox on dejanews or get a free mailbox from Hotmail, Yahoo, or any of the other countless free mailbox providers.

Make sure you configure dejanews to use your throw away box as the address and not your real, personal box. This will allow you a great deal of anonymity, it will allow the friends you make on Usenet to get in touch with you, and it ensures that anything sent to that box (spam, notes from friends, etc) is seen only by you, not your wife, kids or boss.

When you're ready to become a power user then most ISPs offer a Usenet newsfeed. To set it up, you'll need to get a real newsreader (the ones from Microsoft and Netscape which are built into the browser do not count -- they simply aren't powerful enough to do the job). The best newsreader currently available is Forte's Agent. Free Agent is free. Agent costs $40.00 but the powerful features such as email handling and SPAM filters make it very, very worth your money. I use agent personally every day and I've never regretted my choice in newsreaders for a second.

Now that you're handling your own news through agent and your ISP you're going to discover that Dejanews filters out 99% of the spam while your ISP doesn't!!!! Groups where the spam were annoying before now become almost unreadable! There are three cures.

    1. Stick to the moderated groups.
    2. Set up spam filters in your newsreader
    3. Subscribe to a clean newsfeed.

#1 is the easiest, but of course it limits you to a relatively small area of Usenet. #2 is the cheapest but you have to have some technical ability to set up Spam filters. Fortunately, a lot of people use them, so if you ask how to set one up, people will be more than happy to share theirs with you. #3 is the best allround solution. You know you're a news junkie when you pay for a clean newsfeed. I use Newsguy as my news provider. The service costs $40.00 for six months or $60.00 for a year. With that you get a complete and 99.99% spam free newsfeed. By complete I mean that if someone posts a file in six parts you will be able to find ALL six parts. Their service also includes a pop mailbox (which means you can use your favorite email program to manage your mail), but you can also read it through the web if you're travelling. You'll still need a newsreader like Agent (or free agent) to access their service, I recommend these people highly. Very highly.

And now that you're set up on Usenet you'll find at least 30 brand spanking new stories for every taste and perversion waiting for you every day, you'll find the reviews, the lists, the authors, and just everyday people like you who can finally talk about sex and fantasy without feeling like their mother is standing right behind them. I look forward to seeing you soon!
