STUCKHAMPTON COLLEGE FOR GIRLS: SCHOOL RULES

Section 22 - Dress Code

We at Stuckhampton College take pride in our high standards, and these extend to our dress code. Students are expected to comply strictly with the following rules - those who fail to do so face losing points for their house or, in the case of a severe breach, a suspension. The uniform consists of a grey skirt, black shoes, and a white or off-white blouse. The school tie, specified in previous versions of the dress code, is now no longer a part of the uniform.

22.1 - The Standard Uniform

22.1a - Jewellery / make-up
A single stud in the lobe of each ear is permissible. Dangling earrings are prohibited and no more than one pair of studs may be worn at a time. No other pierced areas may bear any kind of jewellery. Rings are permitted as long as they are understated and no more than one may be worn on each hand. One necklace and one bracelet may be worn. Make-up must be understated. Mascara is not allowed.

22.1b - Shoes
Must be black and smart. Heels may be no more than two inches in height.

22.1c - Socks / Stockings / Tights
Socks must be black or white. Stockings may be worn, but these must be of the 'hold-up' variety if the stocking top is likely to show below the level of the skirt's hemline. Tights and stockings must be plain black or flesh-tone, and sheer rather than opaque. Tights may not be worn with skirts that expose the crotch of the tights.

22.1d - Skirts
Skirts must be grey and must be shorter than six inches above the top of the knee. Skirts with hemlines above crotch height are permitted in school, but must not be worn on formal occasions or on trips outside the school grounds. Form-fitting spandex or Lycra skirts may be worn, but if their hemlines are likely to ride up above crotch level then they may only be worn in school.

22.1e - Blouses
Blouses must be white or off-white with no designs or patterns. Short sleeves will only be permitted during the summer term. Blouses must be buttoned up to above the front fastening of the bra or, if this is not possible owing to the tightness of the garment, any buttons below that level must be fastened if it is possible to do so. Blouses of a see-through material must only be worn with a bra beneath.

22.1f - Bras
May be sheer or strapless but must cover the nipples. Must be worn in the circumstances described in subsections 22.1e and 22.2a.

22.1g - Panties
Must be white and non-sheer if they are likely to be revealed by the shortness of the skirt. Thongs are permissible.

22.2 - Gym / Sports Attire

The sports uniform regulations are not as stringent as those for the standard uniform, but it is important to remember that there is a uniform dress code and it must be adhered to. The gym uniform consists of a tank-top or t-shirt, plimsolls or trainers, and either a skirt or a pair of gym knickers. The games uniform consists of a tank-top or t-shirt, sport-appropriate footwear, and a games skirt.

22.2a - Gym and Games Tops
Tops must be either the official school colours tank-top (available from our official uniform supplier) or plain white t-shirts or tank-tops. 'Cut-off' tops are allowed, but any girl expecting to take part in events with other schools must ensure that she has at least one top that fully covers her bra. Bras are mandatory for contact sports and for any fixtures with other schools.

22.2b - Gym Skirts
Must be a solid colour, but may be any length, as long as the hemline is above the knee. However, girls taking part in fixtures with other schools must ensure that their hemline is at crotch-level or lower. Form-fitting skirts, for reasons of mobility, are not permitted unless their hemlines are at crotch-height or above.

22.2c - Gym Knickers
Must be opaque and must cover at least 33% of the buttocks at the back. Thongs are not permitted. Girls taking part in official fixtures must wear either proper gym knickers of the kind available from our official uniform supplier (and not simply a pair of everyday panties) or a gym skirt if no gym knickers are available. Skirts, however, must not be worn for athletics - if no gym knickers are available for athletics fixtures, standard panties must be worn.

22.2d - Games Skirts
Must be white, grey, or in the school colours (see our official uniform supplier). Hemline must be above mid-thigh, and below crotch-height if used for fixtures with other schools. As with gym skirts, they must not be form-fitting unless their hemlines are at crotch-height or above.

22.2e - Swimming Attire
Swimming costumes may be one-piece or two-piece. Strapless tops or thong bottoms must not be used for swimming fixtures with other schools. Students expecting to take part in such fixtures should ensure that their costumes do not become see-through when wet.

22.3 - Casual Clothing

Girls are permitted, after lessons on Saturday morning, to change into casual clothing for the remainder of the weekend. Since the introduction of this measure last year, some girls have taken advantage of the relaxed nature of the dress code and have used it as an excuse for dressing in a slovenly or scruffy manner. I would like to remind all our students that even on weekends we remain a proud institution of high academic standards and must continue to convey an air of professionalism. The following dress code, therefore, applies to casual clothing.

22.3a - Trousers
Girls are permitted to wear jeans, but only if they are fully intact and not frayed or ripped. Other trousers are permissible as long as they are reasonably smart in appearance. It is every girl's responsibility to make sure that at all times her clothing is clean, and this particularly applies to jeans which can all-too-easily look scruffy.

22.3b - Shorts
It is recognised that 'cut-off' shorts may necessarily look frayed. This style of shorts is therefore permitted.

22.3c - Skirts
No length restrictions. Chains and other metal objects, however, are not permitted with leather miniskirts.

22.3d - Tops
As with skirts, no metal accessories are allowed with leather tops. Bra tops and cut-off tops must cover the nipples.

Nudity is to be kept indoors and in the boarding houses. In the summer months, topless sunbathing is permitted only on days when there are no scheduled visits from other schools. Nude sunbathing is prohibited, as is 'streaking'.
