About The Author
Hello there once again. Ever since I put up this web page, I've been meaning to put down a few words about myself and perhaps answer a few questions as well. The main problem was that I really don't know what to say. Coming from a writer, that's pretty bad I have to admit. So I went back into my files and found the FAQ I wrote way back in 1995 and decided to use that as a starting point. So here goes...
ARE YOU REALLY A WOMAN?This is usually the number one question and over the years I've given different responses. I've finally come to the conclusion that people will believe what they want to believe. So if you can't accept that a woman can write erotica (as I've been told many times) then just enjoy the stories and don't worry about who wrote them.
IS ANN DOUGLAS YOUR REAL NAME?
Actually the answer to this is both yes and no. When I wrote my first stories, I posted them using the non long gone Anon service. After a posting or two, I found that I didn't like seeing a nameless number attached to my work. So Ann Douglas was born. Ann is my middle name and Douglas my maiden name. Looking back, I wish I had created a non-gender specific pen name because that would've prevented a lot of silly mail in reference to the previous question.
HOW OLD ARE YOU?
Past the point of worrying about a question like that. But if you're really curious, I'll admit to having been born during the end of the first Eisenhower Administration. Anyone who asks Eisen... who can go back and repeat fifth grade history. Not even being from outside the United States gets you off that one.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
Over the rainbow was my first thought in answer to this one, but I'll be pretty honest and say I'm once again one of the ten million or so residents of the City Of New York. That's Greater New York folks, not just midtown Manhattan which is what the world usually thinks of when they think of New York City.
DO YOU WRITE PROFESSIONALLY?
No, I'm not a professional writer. Far from it I would say. In fact, before starting to write the AnnD tales about ten years ago, I hadn't written so much as a letter since high school. Which was more years ago than I care to remember. Nixon was President if you're still trying to work out the numbers.
What started as a lark turned into a fun hobby, and at some times possibly an obsession. But like I've stated in ASSD, there are worse things to be addicted to than the desire to write.
WHY NOT WRITE PROFESSIONALLY?
Like I just said, I find writing to be a fun hobby and I love the feedback I get. I don't turn pro for two reasons. First, I just don't think they are that good. Many people have said otherwise but when people are paying for something they want a high quality product. Secondly, if I was writing for money, most of the fun would be gone. Other people would be telling me what to write. Besides, if I turned pro you'd all have to pay for my stories.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS?
ARE THEY FROM YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES?My ideas come from a variety of sources. Some may contain elements from my own personal experiences, but none of my stories can be taken as 100% autobiographical. In fact, I would say of the 100+ stories I've written, only a few are really from my own life. I'll leave it to you to guess which ones.
In the case of stories involving Movie, Television or Comic characters, the origin of those ideas are self evident. Who among us hasn't wondered what it would be like to see our favorite characters in settings far from what they'll let them show on TV. (American television at least) Or would've like to have seen what happened in a show after the screen faded to black. Erotic Parodies far predate the Internet, we're now just able to share them with a much wider audience.
As can be seen in my older stories, there is more sex than plot. These were learning experiences. Hopefully as I've written more, the stories have gotten a lot better.
WHY DO YOU SPEND SO MUCH TIME WRITING? HOW LONG DOES A STORY TAKE? WHY DON'T YOU WRITE LONGER STORIES?
I've always fantasized about people so I'm really just turning those fantasies, combined with my experiences, along with those of people I've known, into fodder for my stories.
As to how long a story takes, well there's no set answer for that. There are stories that I've spent a month doing background for even before typing the first word. While there are others that I've sat down cold and typed it from start to finish. In other cases I've become stuck on a story, put it aside and come back to it weeks or even months later.
As to why I don't write longer stories, well i feel that each story actually develops it's own length. Many times I've gotten letters saying that the reader felt that the story should've gone on longer, and to that I'd have to say that life is an unfinished story. Sometimes I like to leave it to the readers imagination as to what might have happened after the final word.
I very rarely do sequels or multi-part stories. The only exceptions are the Star Trek and Comic Stories which are all interlinked. The main reason for this is that if I spend too much time with one story, I start to lose interest as other ideas grab my attention. Short stories is the medium that seems to work best for me.
WHY DON'T YOU DO STORIES ON SPANKING, BONDAGE, (FILL IN THE BLANK)?
My choice of story topics is confined to people and situations that interest me. If a subject hold no appeal to me, I won't write about it.
DO YOU TAKE REQUESTS?
I will always listen to suggestions, but I don't take requests for personal stories per say . A few years back, I discovered that I'd lost a copy of one of my stories during a system crash. This before most of the online archives. In asking someone to send me a copy, I had offered to write a personal story for the first person to send it to me. It turned out that the requested story dealt with a topic that I wasn't really comfortable with. I really wasn't able to get into the characters or the story. I felt really bad that I had to go back on my promise. So I'll never do that again.
WHICH DO YOU PREFER, STORIES WITH ORIGINAL CHARACTERS OR ONES BASED ON TV, MOVIES, ECT?
I like both but find stories with established characters harder to write since everyone has their own view of what they should be. But every now and then, I get inspired and give one a shot. My hat goes off to anyone who does parodies regularly and manages to do them well. The works of Shelby Bush come to mind. If you enjoy erotic fan fiction and haven't read them, take the time to do so.
WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF ALL THIS?
Well a lot of fun for one thing. Truthfully, there are times when even I get turned on by my stories. Conversation with a lot of very interesting people is the main benefit. That was why I started writing in the first place. An unexpected plus is when someone writes and tells me that I inspired that to try their own hand at writing a story.
YOUR STORIES SEEMED TO COVER A RATHER MIXED RANGE OF SUBJECTS AND INCLUDE A BROAD SPECTRUM OF PEOPLE, WHY?
Because we as a race, and thats the human race not just skin color or religion, cover such a wide variety of people and subjects. Some topics I've tried to write about as a challenge, seeing as they are ones which I have no personal experience with. (incest and gay stories). Also, if I only wrote about 6' blonde lesbians, it would only appeal to a single segment of the readership. Actually, readers who have followed my work will indeed notice a vast disproportion of redheads in the stories, but what the heck.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR AUTHOR WANNABE'S?
Just to give it a shot. When I first started, my work was far from great. I still have spelling and grammar mistakes that get by me. Do the best that you can and don't worry too much that your writing ability is lacking. We're in this for the fun, so share your thoughts?
ARE YOU A LESBIAN?
This question does come up from time to time so I decided to include it. I've been bisexual since I was 16 and always thought that love was based on emotion and mental well being, not on comparative anatomy. If the great soul mate of my life had turned out to be another woman, I would only hope that I would've been just as happy as I have been these last twenty years with my husband.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK LIKE?
I'd like to fulfill the fantasy image that some may have and say that I could be in Baywatch or something like that. But the truth is that if you passed me on the street, you probably wouldn't even notice.
Enough people have referred to me as cute in my life for me to accept that description. I'm 5', 115lbs. with short black hair and blue eyes. For those who really into such things, 34c.
Well I hope that answers some of the questions....
