While I have never had more than fringe contact with the lesbian community, which may provide me limited information for what I am about to write, I surmise that the community has never really embraced baby dykes (which I will loosely define as underage lesbians). Apparently there has existed disdain for younger females displaying interest in the lesbian culture of bars, roles, etc. This has happened in spite of the fact that individuals lesbians (somehow away from the community) haven't hesitated in the least to get in the panties of baby dykes.
Much schizophrenia has beset the community. In the 1950's and 1960's, before the child sexual abuse hysteria, lesbians sexed underage girls while experiencing massive guilt. Guilt which seems to me to be much more related to internalized homophobia than paedophilia. Note the evidence from Rule and others.
On the one hand, lesbians are attracted to females, period. That includes girls as well as women. On the other hand, they want to give lip service to cultural prohibition on sex with girls.
Also, lesbians want to have a positive orientation for girls about their lesbianism (or bisexuality to some extent) and yet have been unwilling to mentor baby dykes.
Ageism has been alive and well in the lesbian community, in spite of allegiance to feminism and other values which should elevate, not diminish, the autonomy of young girls. Feminism should proclaim the beauty of girls being mentored (and bedded) by adult lesbians.
Are we any better off today with respect to baby dykes in the lesbian community? "Curve" magazine has a section, "Hey!Baby," which highlights the lives of lesbian and bi underage girls. Perhaps. However, given the 21 age for bars, and the child abuse hysteria, I fear that lesbians do very little for baby dykes even today.
Indirectly, perhaps, via films, books, etc. lesbians are helping baby dykes. However, the media is a poor substitute for a live woman mentor (and yes, even lover).
All in all, when individual women (lesbians, bi women, mothers, etc.) respect girls enough to mentor, respond in passion, love and sex to girl's overtures, as well as seduce, we are advancing the cause for baby dykes. A reality that the lesbian commmnity doesn't in the least publically accept.
